Chapter 0029
Tempest wanted to yell at Ventus for her misinformation. What 6 level 2 magical beast within 200 meters of the group? There is at least 20 level 2 magical beasts coming at them from all directions, not to mention the 100 level one magical beasts!
Yelling at Ventus will definitely be on top of her to do list after she gets out of this mess.
Tempest had magically forgotten she had a part in the wolves ambush since she instigated the fight between Tilda and Wilminia that drew the wolves attention.
After releasing her low level attack spells, Tempest began to cast one spell after another, shifting between Wind Blade, Ice Bolt and Lightning Strike.
It seems to onlookers like Tempest was carelessly casting her spells. She was in a sense. Tempest was testing to see which spells killed the fastest.
Having a variety of spells to choose from is great, however, the caster must know how to effectively use the spells. For example, casting a water spell on a water type magical beast does nothing beside scratching an itch on the magical beast. Using a frontal attack against a magical beast when the caster and the magical beast are at the same level is another form of stupidity. Low-level magical beasts may lack intelligence during a fight, but they make up with immense physical strength. When a cultivator fights against a magical beast at the same level, 90% of the time the cultivator dies. That is how powerful magical beasts are.
Control is another aspect of spell casting Tempest is working on. Tempest tries to attack the vital points such as the heels to reduce the speed of the wolves so the other can kill them and target the throat or eyes for a one shot kill.
Tempest is currently working on the control aspect of spell casting because she finds that her spells does not have the power to cut through the thick mottled furs of the wolves.
The wolves that attack them range from 7 to 10 meters in length. All are taller than Tempest standing on all fours with thick fur coats with a mixture of black, white and grey tones, gigantic paws larger than the paws of polar bear back on Earth and a set of fangs a saber tooth tiger would envy.

Not to mention the drool. These wolves look like they haven’t eaten in a while and the mercenaries are the first prey they found after surviving the ice age.
They look like rabid dogs. Rabid dogs infected with rabies and showing the signs clearly for all to see.
Tempest had nothing against dogs. In fact she loves dogs and cats. A human can pour their affections into the domestic animals without fear of betrayal.
Frothing in the mouth rabid dogs needs to be sent to vet asap, especially those dogs at the drug lord’s mansion Tempest tried to sneak into to physically steal money. Tempest learned her lesson after that. Steal money electronically. No chance for physical injury and Astrapi can easily wipe her electronic footprint clean.
Slowly, Tempest accuracy increased to 40%, while her kill rate is 5%.
“What type of wolves are these? My attacks do nothing to them.” Training is all right and good, but if their number keeps increasing then the mercenaries will be overwhelmed and become dog food.
Level 1 and 2 Iron Clawed Wolves. Alpha Iron Clawed Wolves are level 3 magical beast. Like their name implies, they have a metal attribute, which means strong defense and a resistance to lightning.
“Make sense. Metal conducts electricity.” Tempest fired off more Wind Blade and Ice Bolt while speaking to Ventus, “What are their weakness?”
Overwhelming force.
“Yeah, I can see that,” Tempest said sarcastically.
Add a second property to your spells. The level ones should die after two or three hits.
“How? The Beginners book for mages didn’t go into modifying spells.”
Mages add additional properties to their spells like a writer writing a new sentence. Finish the sentence with a period, then clarified the first sentence with the second sentence.
“That doesn’t tell me anything. And this isn’t the right time.”
Cultivators seek life and death battles to gain enlightenment. Now is the best time to learn new things.
“If I mess up, I’ll end up dead!”
Then don’t mess up.
“Like it’s that simple.” Tempest silently grumbled, but had to concede to Ventus. In all the books she read, the protagonist always gains something after a life and death battle.

Now or never.
Line one Wind Blade.
Line two Vibration.
Boom!
The Wind Blade with the Vibration properties nearly sawed the level one Iron Clawed Wolf in half.
“It works!” Tempest was surprised at the added power an additional property can do.
Tempest may not understand the concept, but she understood the effects of the modification to the spells. Wind Blade like its name implies cut like a knife or a blade. If the target is weaker than the caster, then the saying “cuts like a hot knife through butter” applies. Should the target be stronger than the caster then the effectiveness weakens.
For example, using a sword or a blade to cut through a tree require tremendous effort on the part of the wood cutter. A wood cutter wielding a chainsaw can cut twice as fast with half the effort. Modifying the basic Wind Blade with Vibration is like switching a sword for a chainsaw.
The switch does have its drawbacks. A wood cutter with a blade requires the effort of the woodcutter to fell a tree. A wood cutter with a chainsaw requires little effort from the wood cutter but it requires a different source of energy to power it.
Tempest did not care.
The additional cost of modifying the original Wind Blade is the same as casting another Wind Blade. If one Wind Blade cost one unit then the modified Wind Blade cost 2 units but does three or four times the damage. Even though the modified spell cost twice as much, given Tempest’s vast reserves and her rate of restoring her energy, Tempest can cast the modified Wind Blade all day and not drop below 50%.
“Hahaha Naruto, take that. What do you think of my modified wind blade now?”
Is it necessary to talk about anime now?
“Yes.” Tempest continued to go crazy with her new modified spell attack.
Bang.
Bang.
Bang.
Machine gun Tempest for the win.
“I can see what you mean by modifying a spell to increase its effectiveness.”
What does that have to do with anime?
“It’s not the anime itself, but the principle behind the modification comes from the anime. You see, Naruto had a wind element in the anime, and he went to find Asuma Sarutobi to learned how to use the wind element. The idea to add vibration to the wind blades come from there.” Tempest tried to explain her reasoning.
The principal exists.
“Yeah, and gravity exist as well, but it takes an apple to knock the concept into Newton’s head.”
Newton didn’t create the concept of gravity.
“He just explained it. I know. I know. The principal exists, but I’m not a rocket scientist who understands the theory behind it, so I have to take idea from the media and in this case anime!”
The knowledge has always been there. The difference between humans and spirits is truly emphasized at this point. Spirits exist. They have their affinities towards human but they exist with all the knowledge, theories, laws and principles behind their elements. Humans must observe the world, derive a hypothesis that can stand the test of time to become a universal theory accepted by all.
Ventus never had to go through the learning process like Tempest did so she never suffered the hardship called learning. On the other hand, the spirits lack imagination in applying their knowledge in the real world.
As Tempest converse with her spirits all the while shooting a modified Wind Blade one after another, she wasn’t aware of the attention she was receiving.
Tempest doesn’t know that most beginner mages can cast about 25 spells before they deplete their reserves, so when Tempest kept going and going and going, her fellow rear guard stopped their ranged attack and drew out the sword and got into a defensive stance, not that Tempest needed protectors but these ladies were not going to the front line to be cannon fodder while they have a perfectly justifiable reason to stay in a safe place.

Disclaimers: Chapter Frequency: I aim for one chapter a week. Chapter Length: I try to keep chapters between 3000 and 6000 words. Binge Preference: I plan for 30 chapters per arc. If you want to binge a complete arc, then that is the number to wait for. I will also add a line to chapters indicating the beginning and end of an arc. Advanced Access: I have created a patreon page with early access to four chapters for patrons. What to Expect: Progression fantasy with a western fantasy setting and with eastern fantasy elements. A main character that is forced to explore a very narrow path of magic due to a permanent condition. A main character that is a part of a larger cast. A main character that is growing but won't become the strongest around anytime soon. A story following a single main character but with introduction or theme setting scenes without the main character. What Not to Expect: Edgy grimdark characters – I will never write a sexual violence scene or gory descriptions of torture. I hate reading it and I would hate writing it even more. Romance – romantic relationships will never be the focus of the story and only appear in the background. The main character is preoccupied with other stuff. Other forms of relationships (family, friends, companions) play a bigger role. Cover: The cover art was commisioned from redditor Linh-Nguyen87. The font is alita brush by Inovatype Typefoundry.
