Chapter 24: Boy Meets World

“It is all well and good to be able to see the energy around you but your power allows something rather different. To be able to harness this energy and put it to your own use.” Angil continued.

“The problem is that we,” I gestured to Emi and myself, “don’t actually know how to use magic. Before we went into the cave the Magic Tag didn’t respond to Emi or I.”

“Ah those things are rather useless. They only respond to magic that has already been awakened. The Special Talent perhaps speeded and upgraded the awakening for you guys but you always had the potential for it.”

“So how do we learn to use this Innate Magic?” Emi now rather filled with zeal to get started learning.

“Alright then first off why don’t we get back on the ground?” We followed Angil’s suit and arrived back on the ground.

Angil continued his explanation, “Now I want you to touch the ground with your hand.”

We followed his instruction and touched the ground, “Wow the ground is so warm!” I exclaimed rather shocked at the difference between this world and the one we inhabit.

“This is because of how in this state you are more acutely aware of energy around you and the warmth it gives off.” Angil explained.

“So what does this have to do with the harnessing energy?” Emi asked.

“Well the easiest way to get energy is from taking it from lower capacity animals. This means the insects and bugs which are in more numbers in the ground. So are you guys ready to start?”

I looked at Emi for agreement, she was a newly different Emi, she seemed somehow more dignified and in some ways I had to look at her in a new light as a woman. While I had been thinking these thoughts she had nodded and answered, “Sure sounds like a good idea.”

“Alright then, I want you to hold your hand on the ground and then try and feel each of the beings in the ground. It doesn’t have to be a lot of them. Try to start with 5 for now.”

I focused on the ground and tried to feel out 5 specific consciousness in the ground. I found a 2 centipede, a spider, and a couple of worms that were close to the top of the ground. I grasped the energy and willed it to come to me.

It felt different to my own that I had felt in this Magic World. Mine felt warm and welcoming, like a lazy afternoon sun that makes you feel sleepy and comforting. This on the other hand felt colder, less accepting, more like I had taken something that I shouldn’t have. As I drew it I felt the light of the creatures disappear one after another.

“They’re dead!” I exclaimed finally figuring out why they had disappeared.

“Correct,” Angil’s face looked serious, “that is why you must be careful when you use this type of magic. If you draw all of the energy from any being it will die.”

“Why? Why did I have to kill something innocent?”

“To teach you this lesson and etch it within yourself. Remember every piece of magic has a burden and if you exceed this burden you will die like those bugs.” His face usually cheerful face turned grave as he explained.

Emi looked equally horrified at this outcome as she had done the same as me, “I won’t use this power then. Killing harmless creatures just to increase the power of a spell is wrong.”

“It is your choice,” he turned to talk to Emi, “but I offer a different alternative, take from many creatures that can handle it and control how much you take. That takes much more skills than the wanton destruction you just inflicted on those creatures.”

I had already made up my mind to do what I could to be stronger so I had to take this opportunity but I was determined to make sure that I use it sparingly and carefully.

“Emi we should learn how to use it, otherwise you never know when it could go out of control,” she agreed begrudgingly, I turned to talk to Angil, “Alright then teach us how to use it and control it.”

“As you wish, but be warned it is a magic not to be trifled with. It must only be used when you are serious and in the correct state of mind. If you don’t agree to this then I won’t teach you anymore, understood?”

“Understood.” We replied.

“Okay, the safest way to take energy from the external environment is to take it from animals that have more energy. These are usually larger or more intelligent beings which allows you take enough energy without killing the fauna or flora.”

“Why don’t people just take it from humans or even larger animals?” I asked perhaps wondering if this was a way to circumvent the problem of killing animals. After all the larger the animal the usually the greater the energy reservoir.

“That would be a good idea in theory but the greater the more intelligent the animal the harder it is to take energy away from.”

“Then how about an entire forest? Taking a minute amount from each tree could be a great way of reducing the problem of potentially killing things.”

“Another good idea in theory,” Angil continued and shut me down, “however the greater the number of things you control to get energy from the harder it is to control.”

“So then how do most people do it safely? I’m sure most of the people with this special talent don’t want to kill things.”

“Well there are so few people who have this talent. Even rarer that two people be friendly about each other. The probability of it is so insane that I was surprised that both of you actually had it.”

“That doesn’t answer the question, how do most people use this power?”
