《Parasites and Magic》Farm 1

Rina sat upward, she looked around. The scene was familiar, but the scenery was yet to be the same. The room was unlike the one she woke from when she fell unconscious. Most of the area was wood and glass. Sunlight was much more prevalent here than it was in the caverns. She checked on the condition of her arm. It was still gone, but the flesh had been wrapped. Traces of magic lingered around her.
She was now only half as effective at killing now that she was disarmed. She swung her feet over the edge of the bed and walked to the window. Fields and fences. A few buildings that had the occasional black and white animal meander out.
Behind her, the door was opened. A boy looking maybe in his mid-teens came through. She turned around and faced him. His face got reasonable red. There was some but, it would barely be considered a snack. Killing him would be more of a danger to herself than if she didn’t.
“Oh! You’re awake! I’ll -” His youthful voice was cut off by Rina.
“Where.” She said calmly. The boy barely had any magic in his body.
His eyes kept darting to the sides of the rooms, avoiding eye contact with her. “I’ll answer you after I ge-” She interrupted him again, her voice was just below a yell.
“Where!”
“My family’s farm!” He answered back, his voice had a tinge of nervous unease to it.
She turned back to the window, She gazed back at the animals that grazed casually in the fields. “Farm,” she muttered quietly. The complexity of speaking her own sentences and actually knowing the meaning would have been impossible for her in one of her previous forms.
“Now, Miss, please let me get you some clothes!” His words caused her to look down at her body. She was in fact naked. She was aware of the advantages of wearing armor, but the concept of modesty was lost on her. She said nothing and let the boy leave the room.

Moments later he returned with a stack of folded clothing. He handed it to her, using what she learned from Iseca she wore the garments. The shirt was baggy and had two strings hanging from the neck, most likely a form to tighten the collar of the shirt. The pants were also just as baggy. The clothing is meant for a male was apparent. But they did cover up her less human qualities.
Now feeling a bit better about the now modestly dressed woman, The boy was able to look at her without feeling uncomfortable.
“When sister get’s back from the markets, I’ll ask her to get you something that fits better.” He paused giving her a moment to say anything that was on her mind. Instead, she just stared at him, unblinking.
He let out a slight cough to try and break the tension. “I’ll uh, I’ll show you around the farm.” He opened the door and waited outside. It took her a moment, but she left the room. Unlike the cavern the air was crisp. If she could actually feel certain sensations, it’d probably be pleasant.
“Come.” He said walking down the dirt path. She followed, her heel appendages dug into the softer dirt leaving unusual footprints.
“Uncle said you were injured in the caves.” he turned around while walking. “He said a Groll tore your arm off and that you’re lucky to even be alive when he found you.”
She didn’t confirm the stories that the boy was told. She didn’t do much besides stare and walk.
The distance to the fence containing the cows was a short walk. The kid jumped on the wooden bars. “These are the cows!” She looked out in the fields, at least fifteen cows were huddled together the rest were scattered about minding their own businesses.

The boy pointed out to one of the lone cows. The one picked had a unique appearance. Four horns and two tails. Most of the cows had one or the other, but this one had both. “That one is my favorite. Her name is Lessa.”
Upon closer inspection, some of those animals were radiating with varying magic levels. And that one was especially delicious.
“Speaking of... Miss, what’s yours? Mine is Elrich.”
Breaking from her scan, she looked back at the boy. What did the elves call her again? Lina? Rinae? She went with her last choice.
“Rinae.” She hesitated for a second. “...You eat these?” She asked him a question. If it were up to her, all the cows would have been slaughtered and used for food.
“Sometimes, yes.”
“Why keep all of them?”
The boy smiled. “Uncle said, ‘If you raise your own food you’ll never go hungry.’”
She thought back to the goblins, in a way they were raising their own means to survive. Perhaps this might be a superior way to living than hunting.
“Uncle?”
“Sorry, Uncle is a knight for the town’s militia, he’s the one who brought you here.”
She formed the connection that this kid, Elrich had something to do with one of those knights that had a substantial amount of magic. It’d probably be best to lay low for a while, at least whenever that knight came around.
She looked back out towards the farmland.

MANTIS: On Hiatus
Two young adults who were childhood friends are killed amidst a pandemic worse than our own. After many years apart, Rihelah was on her way to see Michael, hoping to rekindle their friendship on the day they would both lose their lives. The pair are unwittingly selected to represent Earth in a test set forth by godlike beings who are intrigued that our world gave rise to complex life without having been intentionally seeded by their kind. Michael and Rihelah are reincarnated as predatory insects upon a distant planet called Edon. Elves, Dwarves, Dragons and their kin, Goblins, Ogres, Humans, Lizardfolk, Orcs, and sapient arthropods known as Enkelyn all inhabit this beautiful world touched by magic. The tiny mantids must survive terrified and very much alone upon arrival, while neither is aware that the other has also been reincarnated upon the same island. Naked in their new chitinous exoskeletons, they must now brave the terrors of an alien world's food chain. Each will benefit from their years of experience on Earth, but they must somehow find a balance between old lives and new. Moderate mindsets and peaceful values from a mostly safe and privileged life on Earth must now contend and somehow coexist with the strange physiology of a new and unfamiliar body as well as the violent aggressiveness of a predator's mind. To top things off, the pair are about to find themselves struggling with their inner turmoil while swept up by terrible conflicts they know nothing about. Both endure the hardships of their new lives while attempting to understand and make proper use of a mysterious and terse video-game-like System that pops status notifications into their vision from time to time, but initially has no useful interface. Some of the options they are presented with sound enticing, but as with everything else in life, each choice has benefits and drawbacks... Author's Note: This story makes many changes to the original version, and readers of Mantid will find that many things in Mantis are new and different; especially after the first few chapters. I've learned a ton from writing like a madman, and also from the RR community. I appreciate you guys! :)
