CHAPTER NINETEEN

Surely there's aren't bugs out there with gods weirder than mine...

~

Meanwhile, somewhere far away from Twig and all he knew

An injured but still terrifying monstrous insect flew

As if it feared discovery by any living thing

Panic was apparent every time it flapped a wing

~ Name: Sting ~

Just a monster I forgot about until just now

How did it escape that fight with those guys anyhow

I didn’t mean to name it Sting, but I’ve no time to care

That boy’s demise is more pressing than some big bug somewhere

Sting had been a portal monster for his entire life

Flying around with a stinger sharper than a knife

Taking pleasure only in absorbing energy

From the foes it killed along with his big family

Never had he had a single thought of and kind

Instincts were the only thing that ever filled his mind

But in that recent fight where fierce attacks had been exchanged

Suddenly his view of battle had completely changed

Though he couldn’t speak with the bug face he’d always worn

If he could speak at all, he’d say his heart felt stretched and torn

All the instincts that he had were telling him to fight

But now some new sensation told him instead to take flight

He couldn’t understand what was now happening to him

Nor would he guess that it was due to some cruel god’s whim

All that he knew was that for the first time ever

He could understand things, and he understood ‘danger’

He flew with all the strength he had and then, another first

He felt the need to stop by a river to quench his thirst

Why had he not thought before to drink water instead

He’d only ever thought to absorb lifeforce from the dead

And so the creature known as Sting took refuge in a tree

Mourning those he’d lost in battle only recently

Trying not to think but still unable to resist

The thoughts flowed through his mind and made his body writhe and twist

Through the night he came to terms with thoughts that were his own

And though he’d been by himself before, now felt alone

Until he heard to voices drawing nearer to the tree

He looked down at the trail beneath him very quietly

“I can’t believe another portal opened yesterday

That’s more than I’ve ever seen in just a single day”

“Indeed my friend, if not for your great swordsmanship and skill

Those monsters would have rampaged til nothing was left to kill”

“Do you think the king will order all of us to war?

There’s never been such demand for us heroes before”

“Yes, it’s possible, but it is not for us to know

We can only go where our king tells us we must go”

The men walked by the tree where Sting tried desperately to hide

So scared of what he heard that if he could, he would have cried

Those were humans, he had fought those types of foes and won

But now he could remember clearly all the things he’d done

If those people found him and they knew what he once did

They would hunt him down no matter where Sting ran or hid

Heroes were his enemies, but now he understood

Living off their corpses wouldn’t do him any good

He looked around the tree and realized that there was fruit

And suddenly he felt as though he’d stumbled on some loot

He took a bite of one big apple, as big as his head

And knew he’d be happy to live off of these instead

System Message

Warning, a new species has achieved enlightenment

This is not a standard or predictable event

Since achieving sentience, the creature has evolved

The System must consider this uncommon matter solved

Sting stared at the blue screen just in front of him in awe

Not noticing the apple juice trickling down his jaw

Even though he knew the words he read, he knew not how

But if he had one, the words would have made him raise his brow

He stared with his big buggy eyes until the words were blurred

And was startled by the sudden chirping of a bird

Then, as he began to hope the excitement was done

The blue box vanished and was replaced by another one

Achievement: Adorable

Why hello there little one, I’ve seen no one like you

You are just the cutest thing, oh what am I to do

In a past life I kept bees, I just loved how smart they were

As a god I’d love to have you as my follower

A sudden increase in his stats cause Sting some mental strain

His intelligence very nearly drove the bug insane

But after he calmed the world was suddenly so clear

Though the strange god blessing him seemed like something to fear

I’ve been hesitating to bless anyone for years

But you’re just so cute that it might bring this god to tears

Other gods just laughed when I tried blessing bugs before

But who's laughing now, I have a mortal I adore

Sting felt many feelings for the first time right away

Fear and intrigue mostly, but it was quite hard to say

It bothered him to feel the message couldn’t be refused

But he understood best that he was feeling confused
