CHAPTER FOUR
So my guardian deity values the life of a slime over mine?!
~
You might wonder why it hurt so much to be so weak
Surely there were noble, non-heroic paths to seek
But the land had not known lasting peace for many years
And being barred from fighting would bring anyone to tears
Monsters from another world were too common a sight
They could appear from a portal any day or night
No one knew where they came from, but everyone agreed
Defending your hometown from monster was an awesome deed
Every farmer’s son and daughter you could ever find
Was always ready to leave all their work and chores behind
Even the old ladies who played board games at the park
Were known to fight monsters now and then when times got dark
After all, it took so little effort to be strong
The gods would even give rewards for adventures gone wrong
And while achievements just for effort only boosted speed
Being fast was quite a useful thing to be indeed
Every week a portal would appear up in the sky
And monsters would spill out of it in the blink of an eye
But a team of heroes was never too far away
Ten or twenty would swoop in to quickly save the day
Achievement: Habitual Hero
Congratulations on the hundredth time you saved your town
Here’s a boost to all your stats, we hate to see you frown
You and all your comrades are just doing super great
Now run home for dinner, heroes should never be late
So where in all this heroism does our young Twig fit?
In a fight could he help out even a little bit
Well, the first time he was near a portal that appeared
He found out that his luck was exactly as he feared
Advertisement
He saw the portal appear one day while he was alone
Walking home from his friend’s farm after some seeds were sown
The portal was the size of a small animal at most
And only one creature came out with no powers to boast
A tiny slime appeared before the portal disappeared
Finally a chance to kill a monster,” Twig had cheered
He stomped on it at once and killed it without an issue
Then he saw a message while he was cleaning his shoe
Achievement: Bully
Wow, you squished a helpless slime who hadn’t hurt no one
I hope you feel sorry for the awful thing you’ve done
As a punishment for being such a jerk today
One level of your speed stat will now be stripped away
~ Name: Twig ~

A jerk who picks on helpless monsters, what a piece of work
As his guardian angel, I must say: what a jerk!
There are heroes risking life and limb to save the day
Why don’t you just take your messy shoe and go away
And so, at eight years old, he learned his unfair destiny
He was deeply hated by a certain deity
There was nothing he could do to earn that god’s blessing
He would have to work to compensate for what’s missing
Something few had ever done in status history
Is rely on your physical body’s ability
Training strength by lifting weights and speed by running laps
Studying all day while all your friends were taking naps
Even if his stats remained the same, he could grow strong
All that he could hope was that it wouldn’t take too long
and if his stats were reduced to zero, he could train
And so he’d work beneath the scorching sun and pouring rain
He’d climb the tallest trees and lift the heaviest of rocks
He’d run before for the sun rose until he wore out his socks
And when he tired he’d only eat the healthiest of food
And he’d never rely on blessings from a god so rude

8 139A Mildly Odd Reality Breaker
Omar receives an unexpected visitor who comes baring a gift—a "registration ticket"—in the form of a small metal card. The ticket is itself an offer to participate in the game, "Reality Break." Accepting this offer means that Omar will be able to perceive the true nature of reality where there is not one, but two dimensions of time, and in this second dimension history changes (and somewhat "frequently"). Along with this, he will also gain access to the "chronopause"; another reality that is not so much parallel to our own as it is perpendicular, which acts as both a place and the natural boundary between non-sequential points on the timeline. Using the chronopause, Omar will become a chrononaut with the ability to travel through time, and as a player, he will be given a cybernetic interface and his own portable extradimensional storage space. It's a strange conversation, but due to Omar's dismally short attention span, he only consciously hears that last bit about the portable pocket space, and that's only after the physics-defying void is opened in his living room and literally waved in front of his face. Reality is certainly stranger than most people realize, but then again, so is Omar. Thankfully, he responds well to shiny things, and for better or for worse, his chronic inattentiveness is the least of his psychological issues. Omar also has a mild form of "Oppositional Defiant Disorder" which presents itself as an occasional, arbitrary need to disobey others (especially authority figures). However, his oddest psychological issue by far is his "abnormally hyperactive" subconscious mind. Outwardly and consciously, Omar is a lazy, apathetic man-child prone to mildly asinine behavior. Subconsciously, he's some sort of genius capable of extraordinary feats of cognition. Most of the time, Omar is a (technically) functioning adult, but in order to live as such, he must rely entirely upon unusual abilities he's completely unaware of, despite the fact that he uses them regularly. Up until now, his life had merely been ridiculous, but now it was also a game. Note: The narrative style is that of a reliable narrator with a "3rd-person sarcastic" POV. This story takes place in the Reality Breakers/Chronopause universe.
8 142Perspective
Einheim is a world of magic and mystery populated by mortal and immortal, and whenever they meet each other, there is a clash of perspectives. This world follows its own rules and even if the Dvergr, Giants and Faeries are inspired by norse and celtic mythologies; they are their own things.
