《Checkpoint》CH 6: Mad Mal (end of book one)

Saturday, Mal pov
To say Mal was not having a good week would be putting it mildly. The introduction of the new monsters had been a thorn ( or spike to be a bit more accurate) in Mal's side this past week. In fact, Mal was currently in a battle with these new creatures, the spike-slinging bugs and another bug-like monster, about four feet tall with four bladed arms.
To paint a better picture of the current scenario, an angry Mal was currently pinned behind a car, taking cover from an onslaught of chitin spikes. On the ground, there were the bodies of two of the bladed-armed bugs, also known as “Slicers", and the body of one spiker. Besides the bugs on the ground, there was also one living spiker and slicer left.
This was not the first time this battle had taken place, nor the second time, and Mal was getting sick of it. As Mal hunched behind the car, the slicer climbed over the car and was about to jump on Mal, only to be shot in the face three times by Mal. In a previous version of this battle, the slice had caught Mal by surprise, but this time Mal was not having it.
Grabbing the corpse of the slicer, Mal held it as a makeshift shield as they advanced toward the last remaining enemy. Upon getting within arm's distance from the spiker, Mal threw their diy shield at it, knocking it over. Mal then aimed their pistol at the bug pile and shot at it. The first shot missed due to the sporadic squirming of the spiker and instead of a second shot, there was a click instead, that was the last straw.
Mal lost their cool, they threw the empty firearm aside and ripped a spike from the struggling bug, which they swapped to reverse grip and began ruthlessly stabbing the downed creature. Their mind was in a haze as they kept stabbing at the bug, each stab scratching away at the chitin armor. Whenever the spike broke from use, Mal would rip another spike free and keep stabbing.

It wasn't clear how many hours or minutes went by as Mal brutalized the bug, but by the time Mal finished, there was a pile of broken spikes and a long-dead bug. As they finally calmed down and got their bearings, a message appeared in front of Mal.
Incoming message Stop, stop, he's already dead! Sorry, please ignore that. Anyway, by brutally killing something with its own body intentionally, you have reached a milestone for the steps of the journey of the fallen past. Because of this you have unlocked a new feature, the system! To activate this feature, please speak or think the words “initiate system” May this tool guide you further along your path.
Despite being imprisoned for a good chunk of their life, Mal had read enough to know what a system was, and after all that has happened in the past years, Mal accepted the introduction of the system pretty easily. And without ado, they thought the words ‘initiate system’ and a window opened in front of them.
Hi! Hello! Welcome to the system! Would you like a tutorial?

[Arc 0 - The Prologue] Airen and Yuelei Casteya - Two twins separated in act of revenge not of their own doing. One is sent to the frozen north, where she is adopted by a frost phoenix and taught to survive in the harshest of conditions, eventually meeting with the forces that govern nature itself. The other is sent to the southern deserts and is saved by a band of slaves-turned-raiders who take him in as one of their own, where he eventually came into contact with a being that calls herself the History Eater. The two sought power and the forces of the world would soon listen, but not without their own aspirations. And perhaps if the two were to meet again, they would be so warped by their own hands and would not even recognize the other. [Arc 1 - Disciple of the History Eater & Knighthood] Under the guidance of Fieluri, the whimsical being from the Archive, Airen moves south to the Red Slate Republic to attend Stonewall Military Academy. There, he finds himself wrapped up in the History Eater's ploys, and at the same time, learns of the somber side of society in the slave-driven republic. Eventually, under Fieluri's instruction, he descends into the depths of dungeons where he eventually reunites with an old acquaintance. Yuelei, who has grown used to living in the snowy mountains, moves north to the Holy Land of Ecclisa to attend the Royal Knight Academy. After Lin leaves, she slowly adapts to living with humans again, but not without ceaseless caution. The thinly-veiled peace is eventually broken, for the monsters that haunted the nights in the Whitefrost Mountains are returning once more. In response, the Holy Land of Ecclisa slowly prepare for war, but Yuelei is not just a mere bystander. All paths eventually leads to conflict. When it arrives, one can choose to deter it away, or to revel in it. The world ended on December thirty-first of the year two thousand and twenty, precisely at the stroke of midnight. The human race began to be systematically exterminated by the spawn of the System. We were given a chance to defeat them, to take back our place at the top of the food chain. We failed. The first to perish were those who bravely rebelled. The soldiers. The defenders. One by one, they fell. In their final moments, they begged for aid. Nobody replied. The next to succumb were those who feebly cowered. The deniers. The leeches. Together, they fell. In their final moments, they cried out into the darkness. Countless voices replied in kind. The last to decline were those who shamelessly ran. The deserters. The cowardly. Alone, they fell. In their final moments, they whimpered quietly. There was nobody left to answer. The final human to die was a survivor. A runner. As he died, he begged for salvation. His prayers were answered. He was offered a chance to save himself, along with all of humanity, and he took it. This is his story. “I sat in the dark and thought: There’s no big apocalypse. Just an endless procession of little ones.”― Neil Gaiman, Signal to Noise. I am absolutely new to writing and will take any and all constructive criticism. Please give feedback, it is greatly appreciated. I will update the tags as they change, and I hope that you enjoy this little story I'm writing! Quick warning: Seamus is intentionally a flawed character, and this story is going to explore those flaws and perhaps even change a few of them. I do not agree with all of his actions, but it is what it is.
