《Lawfully Wedded》Chapter 3

My hands trembled as I walked in the building. I had worn a white lace blouse and black pants. I was nervous. After so long I'd finally found a job and I just hope I wouldn't mess it up.

I pressed the lift button, waiting for it as I bounced from one leg to another. I was careful not to drop my coffee thermos that mom had prepared for me. There was no one in the world who made coffee as amazing as my mom's.

To calm my nerves, I was even listening to some music but seldom did it help. I stepped inside the lift and my hands only started to tremble more as I pressed the number 25.

"Doors closing," the lift voiced out.

"You can do it," I told myself as I waited for the door to open.

"Fifth floor, doors opening," the robotic voice said and the doors opened. I glued as I stepped out and took a look at the scene in front of me.

The receptionist stared at me before walking up to me with a smile and I forced myself to smile as well.

"You must be Sanjana Shukla,"

"Y-yes,"

"Welcome to our office, Mr. Sanjay will--" before she could speak, the lift opened.

A hush fell over the office as in walked Rohan?

"You?!" I said as I walked in front of him. I heard several gasps and heard a glass break somewhere in the distance.

"Miss Sanjana," Rohan said.

"So what you're following me now? Keeping track on where I go and where I don't? And what are you here for? To stalk me? To make me feel uncomfortable? Is that how 'nice' you are?" I snapped, my anger getting the best of me.

"Woah calm down,"

"Calm down? How do I calm down after you've showed up at my workplace?" I said and Rohan looked uncomfortable as he stared at me.

He opened his mouth but as footsteps approached us, he fell silent and his lips turned into a small smile.

"You have the audacity to smile?" I asked.

"What's happening here? And Bhai what did you do now?" Mr. Sunil said as he playfully hit Rohan.

My eyes widened and the coffee thermos fell from my hand as my jaw hit the floor.

Oh fuck! Oh no! Rohan was Mr. Sunil's brother? That means he was the other brother who owned the firm. And I had just insulted him. I imagined the face of my dad as he would laugh when he learnt that I was sacked on the first day of my job.

"Oh hi Miss Sanjana," Mr. Sunil said before turning to Rohan and then looking back at me before his face morphed into a look of horror.

"Oh no! Don't tell me what I think just happened," Mr. Sunil said only to be smacked on his head by Rohan.

"Guys, get back to work, Lilly please show Miss. Sanjana her desk," Mr. Sunil said and I hurriedly followed Lilly as she showed me the desk.

"Here, you can settle down, this is just temporary since the bosses have decided to give you a office of your own, so get settled and then by lunch break we'll move you to the new office,"

"An office to myself? On what occasion?"

"Well Ms. Sanjana, you're one of the few people who owns a double degree and people with double degree get a office of their own since they have more workload than the others," she said and I sat down on the chair only to see that I had left my coffee mug on the floor and when I thought about getting it, I realised that Mr. Sunil and Rohan were standing there, discussing something.

Maybe they were discussing when and how to tell me that they've sacked me.

It was lunch time and I had down absolutely nothing but stare at the laptop and tried to mingle with the women around me only to be given a cold shoulder.

I would hear occasionally of someone's date with Rohan(haha) and how Rohan and Mr. Sunil looked like a snack and how someone wanted to marry them.

The ringing of the phone on my table startled me.

"Hello?" I answered as I toyed with the coil of the telephone.

"Come to my office," Rohan said and hung up.

Definitely getting sacked.

I walked to the cubicles and the one that read Rohan, I knocked once before walking in and there he was, spectacles on his face as he worked. He looked up at me and smiled.

"Come in and make yourself comfortable,"

"Look, if you wanna sack me go ahead no need to be sweet, and if you want to cancel the marriage then also it'll be fine," I said as I stood by the door.

"Sanjana, come and have a seat," he said softly and I walked and sat opposite him.

"Now, listen to me okay?" He asked and I found myself nodding my head.

"I'm sorry for making you uncomfortable, I didn't know you worked here until this morning, when Sunil had taken your interview, I was away on some business trip as I was searching for some lawyers specialising in Criminal law and Marital law, I came in the evening and that was the day we met, Sunil told me in the morning when I was leaving for work that he had hired someone, precisely you, who is specialised in criminal and marital law. I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable and I'm not going to fire you, making people comfortable is what our vision is and having made you uncomfortable on the first day of your job was wrong on my side,"

"Okay..." I said.

"Now, if you feel uncomfortable, you are free to leave or I could shift you to another headquarters, but I would say that I need you, I've been working on a case for the past few months and I would really appreciate your help and regarding the marriage, it is still a yes from my side," he said.

"Okay,"

"Okay as in you'll work here or..."

"Okay, I'll work here, it's already been a tiresome job to find somewhere to work, so I'll work here," I said and I didn't miss the way he smiled but quickly recovered.

"Come on, I'll show you to your office," he said as he stood up.

"Okay,"

"Oh and here is your thermos, you'd forgotten it on the floor," he said as he placed it on the table.

I took it and he showed me my office, which was honestly the best thing in the world!

"I'll be sending over some of the past files so you can get well settled and have an idea of the cases we've won and some we've lost, and I'll be sending you another copy of the file I'm currently working on for which I'll definitely be needing your help," he said as he watched me.

"Okay," I said and he chuckled a little.

"I'll be sending Lilly over with the files okay? You can settle in for now and would you like to eat lunch with me or that would be too uncomfortable for you?"

"I'll eat on my own for today," I said timidly, too embarrassed to have declined the offer.

"No need to be embarrassed, your comfort is my priority, and one last thing before I leave you for now, I am not dating anyone in this firm, I was never in a relationship with anyone in this firm, so any rumour you hear, it'll probably be bluff,"

"You don't need to clarify yourself Rohan," I found myself saying.

"Now, I'll leave you to yourself, if you have any doubt, dial 2 on the landline and I'll answer. I specialise more into criminology so we'll be working in the same department while Sunil specialises in corporate law,"

"Okay,"

"Have a nice day then," he said as he left my office.

As I settled in the plush chair, I found myself realising that I didn't feel uncomfortable around Rohan.
