《Softer Than Lavender (Boy×Boy)》The B-word

Dear Diary,

It's been an entire week since I've seen Drew. I miss him already. That must sound so stupid, but I can still smell him on my pillow. We have been messaging constantly on snapchat, but it just makes me miss him more. Although, it gave me an idea, one might even say, a good idea. My dad told me this morning that the coach had called him and told him that he wanted to invite me to the end of the year party with the team since I played with them for so long and "everyone missed me". The idea that I'm being pitied makes me feel sick, but... what if I showed up to the party with Drew as my date? I could shock the hell out of the team. Could you imagine them finding out that I'm gay? They would probably all disintegrate. Especially if they found out I was dating a cheerleader when most of them are single as hell. Well, technically I guess we hadn't decided what we have going on between us, but I know whatever it is, it's worth my time because it feels amazing. I'll have him show up with me as my plus one, and he can wear his cheer uniform and it will feel so freeing.

Ring, ring.

Drew yawned. "Oh hi Greyson! Sorry I'm just a bit tired, just took a nap."

"Nice, do you have your cheer uniform at your place?"

"Yes, where is this conversation going?"

"Probably not where you were just thinking, or where you would be expecting."

"Before you tell me where you're going with this I have a suprise! I talked to my cheer coach and she told me she would love to support my decision to mix up the cheer uniform."

Greyson bolted up in his chair. "Wait... does that mean?!"

"Skirt! I am so nervous to show up to practice on friday."

"What if we gave it a practice run?" Drew stared at his phone for a few seconds in confusion.

"Um. By practice, you mean...?"

"Oh jeez, sorry, yeah I should probably specify. I have a football party to attend and I need a plus one. They only invited me out of pity and so they wouldn't look bad, even though they were always instigators to a lot of the issues I had going on. I figured if I took you as my date, they would all be shocked as hell."

"So, you want to use me for shock factor to scare all your old football buddies away?"

"Yikes sorry, I didn't think of it that way. No baby, I mean like bring you with as my date. If they see that I've moved on from all their bullshit and I'm ok with being gay then maybe they'll see that nothing they have ever said could really hurt me. Plus, if they see that I'm dating a hot cheerleader and they're not, I'm sure they'll secretly be jealous."

Drew covered the phone speaker and tried not to squeal. "Dating? Can you say that one more time?"

"Well, aren't we?"

"I don't know, you tell me. Please tell me, I want to hear it."

"Okay fine, please come with me to the party, as my adorable boyfriend. And wear your cheer uniform, we're going to make some boys jealous." Drew giggled and tried to hide his excitement.

"Skirt or no skirt?"

"Now as much as I'd prefer you without a skirt, we're going to be in public..."

Drew blushed and his eyes widened. "Shhhh! Grey! My sister is eavesdropping right now."

"Oops sorry Drew's sister. Your brother looks lovely with clothes on too!"

"Greyson!" Drew's sister chuckled and walked over to join the conversation.

"Hey you, you better take care of my brother, he's my most valuable possession, mostly because he's my only possession."

"Oh, thanks sissy... love you too."

Greyson laughs. "Your brother is safe with me. Coach will be there, as well as the cheer team and my dad will be a parent volunteer."

"And when is all this?"

"Tonight at seven. I just found out I was invited."

"Okay that's doable. You excited flower boy?"

"Don't call me that in front of my boyfriend!"

Greyson smiled. "You guys are adorable. Meet me outside my house at six thirty, my dad will drive us there, ok flower boy?"

Drew blushed. "Okay mister."

"Ooh, someone's blushing!" Drew's sister smirked.

"Hey, shut up!" Greyson laughed and hung up the call.

Greyson opened up his messages to his dad. He sat for 5 minutes trying to decide how to explain his entire plan. He wasn't sure how to explain the whole skirt situation to his father. The most he was hoping for was a confused okay. What he feared was changing his father's view of Drew. If being gay weren't enough to scare his dad, perhaps this would be the heart attack he was waiting for.

Greyson closed his messages and ran out into the garage to greet his father at his welding station. "Hey dad, can I talk to you about the party?"

"Sure, you want any of this scrap metal? I got it from the junk yard yesterday. Didn't end up using it for my project." Greyson picked up a chunk of metal likely from a fence post.

"Yeah why not, I can make something with that chain link over there. Anyways, I wanted to tell you that I'm bringing Drew as my plus one."

Greysons dad took off his welding helmet and then his gloves. "Sure, they did say you were allowed one friend."

Greyson grinded his shoe into the ground. "Uh, I meant more like a date."

"I see. Are you worried about what the guys might say, or are you just going to say he's a friend?" Greyson looked at the concrete.

"No. I'm sick of their bullshit. They never liked me much anyways, you know that. I figured that I'd bring my boyfriend and he'd wear his cheer uniform. All our cheer girls are doing it, So he'd fit in, at least in that aspect. Then if the guys give me shit, they can just go to hell. I don't need bad friends."

His dad took his welding apron off and folded it onto the counter. "Boyfriend? You told me you were just figuring it out with him."

"Oh yeah... I seem to be throwing around the b-word a lot today..." Greyson cleared his throat awkwardly. "I accidentally called him my date today and that's how it happened. It was a lot easier than actually asking him."

Greyson's dad snorted and shook his head. "You get your awkward qualities from your mother, but in the best way I promise." Greyson smiled and rolled his eyes. "His uniform, what are the guys going to think about that?"

"Well, I'm sure they'll be a bit shocked... for two reasons... one because I'm dating a cheerleader and they're not, even though I'm gay and technically I guess they wouldn't be jealous because my cheerleader is a man."

Greyson scratched his head. "Uh yeah, I'm sure they'll be more jealous of you being in a relationship, the cheerleader bit is just an extra sprinkle on the cake. But what's the other reason? You said there were two reasons."

Greyson shot finger guns at his dad and backed up slightly. "Right right... the other thing is the uniform, he made a little change to his uniform since that video you seen."

"A little change?" Greyson's dad raised an eyebrow. "You say that as if this little change is going to upset me. Do you want me to guess?"

"Uh huh. You got me there." Greyson's dad rolled his eyes.

"Well let's see, the school colors probably didn't change, and the school making a slight alteration to the uniform wouldn't necessarily offend anyone... is he going to wear a women's cheer uniform?"

"Wow, that was easier than I expected. And yes, but also no. He just got a skirt added to his existing uniform. No more pants."

Greyson's father shrugged his shoulders and reached a hand out to pat him on the back. "I'm not necessarily a fan of boys wearing skirts, but I'm also not necessarily a fan of boys, so I suppose that's more your department anyways. I'm sure these girls will be all over him regardless. You know how they are, you'd better mark your territory."

"Eww dad I'm not peeing on him, that's a weird thing I'm not into."

Greyson's father pinched the bridge of his nose and crossed his eyes. "No you're right, please don't pee on him. If nothing else is going to scare him away then I'm sure that would. No, you piss stick, I meant make it clear you are with him. I'm sure he will get shit too, you know how those boys are. If they know you're there with him, nobody will try anything. Just keep him close."

"I know dad. I know the dangers of this kind of stuff, but I'll protect him. Plus you're our trusty transportation, and supervision, so we'll be safe."

Greyson's dad went in for a fist bump. "I love you no matter what you do okay? But I want you to tell your mother that you two are in a relationship or she might kill me for not telling her. Understand?"

Greyson groaned and opened the garage door. "Fine, I'll tell mom about..." his mom suddenly appeared from behind the garage door.

"Tell mom about what?" Greyson jumped and gasped. "Holy shit! Sorry momma, didn't realize you were behind the door."

Greyson's mother laughed nervously. "That's alright darling, now what were you going to tell mom about?"

"No, I did not get expelled. You can relax. But don't relax to much because I'm gay and Drew is also gay, and we are both gay together, meaning we are together...and I feel like I really need to stop talking..."

Greysons dad face palms. "Him and Drew are in a relationship and he is taking him to the party as his date. I'm supervising with coach and a couple cheer parents I know will be fine with this."

His mom looked him in the eyes. "Even though I don't completely understand everything, I can tell you really like that boy, and I did want you to be happy. Maybe this is what I prayed for. I prayed for God to make you happy, and for me to finally understand what you have been going through. He's a good looking kid, not the type I'd thought you'd go for, but he seems like a good honest kid."

Greyson walked to the garage door and took a deep breath. "I am happy mom. And he is good looking, what about that isn't my type?"

Greyson's mom laughed. "I always figured I'd catch you messing around with one of your buddies or something and that's how I'd find out. Cheerleaders didn't exactly come to mind, I mean part of me hoped that maybe you'd surprise me by dating a cheerleader."

"Well technically I did surprise you by dating a cheerleader, but my cheerleader has a penis, that's an entire double surprise." Greyson's dad snorted and grabbed his face.

"Grey! Don't talk about his man business in front of your mother!" Greyson's mother shook her head.

"You are your father's son."

"Hey what's that supposed to mean?"

Greyson's mother chuckled. "Relax chuck, I meant your profanity, not your shared interest in naked men."

"I see your point."
