《A Birdflash Story》Memories

Wally is staring at his aunt in disbelief. She just said his name. Not to his cousin, but to him. Iris also has an expression of shock on her face. She raises her hand to her mouth, tears welling up in her eyes. Her younger nephew looks between them with equal surprise.

"Hold on! You remember him, Iris?"

Iris doesn't reply verbally, but nods. She then throws her arms around the red head, catching him off guard. Wally returns the hug.

"I've missed you so much, aunt Iris," Wally says, sniffing some bit himself. She pulls back, hands still on his arms.

"I can't believe - how could I have forgotten you?"

"It's not your fault, Iris. It's a..long story."

"Come in! You have a lot of explaining to do, mister," she ushers her two nephews in the door and shuts it. She wipes her eyes with her sleeve. Iris brings them into the living room and gets them to sit down on the couch.

"Tell me everything."

"Putting it as simply as I can, I'm from another timeline, technically. In that timeline I was..older. I got stuck in the speed force. Barry ran back in time to save his mother and when he did it changed the course of the timeline. He reset things, but as time was mending, someone..took ten years away. Everything that happened during those ten years? Only I remember it because I was outside of time in the speed force. But people don't remember me because this demented wizard from the future erased everyone's memory of me. I managed to escape from the speed force and now everyone is younger again."

"Oh. God...wow. That's a lot to take in.." Her eyes then light up like she's gotten another flash of memory, "How's Linda? And the kids?"

Wally's younger cousin frowns, "Kids? What kids?"

The redhead is looking down at his knees, a tight feeling in his chest, "You...remember Jai and Irey?"

"Of course I do. They're more like my grandchildren then great niece and nephew...Wally? What's wrong?"

"Linda...she doesn't remember me. I tried to talk to her, but..she doesn't remember anything about me or how we were married or.." His voice cracks. He misses them so much it hurts.

"The twins...oh god, Wally..."

"Hold on man. You had kids?"

Wally nods, sort of choked up, "I..I thought I was the only one who remembered them. I haven't told anyone."

Iris turns to her younger nephew, "Wally, why don't you go get ready for bed?" It was phrased as a suggestion, but Wallace knows it's a hint to get out of there and let his older cousin have a good breakdown session. He nods and speeds out of the living room and up the the stairs.

Iris moves over to the other couch and sits down, wrapping her arms around her teary-eyed nephew, "My poor boy. It's okay. Let it all out."

"I miss them so much, Iris. I miss reading them stories. I miss chasing them around the house at high speed and them driving me crazy. I miss their mother."

"I know, I know. They were the cutest kids. Just like you when you were little..."

"I tried to rebuild things with Linda, but I think I freaked her out. I've been back over a year. Her career is really kicking off and she has no time for the stranger who knows everything about her."

"You've been with the Titans in New York, haven't you?" Iris asks.

"Yeah. They do remember me, but not Linda. They've helped me through it a lot, especially Dick..."

"Dick was always such a good friend to you. At least you still have him," Iris nods, then laughs, "You know, I always felt like he had a secret little crush on you.."

"It's..funny you say that..a couple of days ago I had a realisation..." Wally begins and Iris finishes, "That you also like boys? I know, Wally. I've always known."

Wally frowns, "Was it obvious?"

"No, god no. Thank goodness. I don't know what your parents would have done if they found out..." Iris sighs. They both know what would have happened. Wally's dad, Iris's brother Rudy, would have disowned him and his mom, Mary, wouldn't have stopped him from doing it. Him being in any way queer was even worse than the speedster thing in their eyes.

"I don't want to see them again, Iris. Does..does that make me a bad person?" Wally asks, looking to his aunt for the answer. His dad used to hit him when he misbehaved - or that was the excuse anyways. He got drunk quite often. His mother stood by and let it happen, often ignoring it. By doing nothing, she was just as bad.

"No. They didn't deserve such a smart, handsome son like you. You've been given a chance to leave them behind you and I think you should take advantage of it. Most people don't get that do-over."

Wally nods. He's so glad to have his aunt back. She was the first adult in his life that actually cared properly for him and took his side. Iris took him out of Blue Valley and brought him to Central City. Without her, he never would have met the Flash or have become Kid Flash. He owed her so much and she didn't ask for anything in return.

"Thanks, Iris. I have been trying to forge something new. Dick and I..well we sort of..hooked up on Wednesday," It felt weird saying that to his aunt, but they were both adults and he couldn't really explain it any other way, "We're kind of going out. It's weird, neither of us have ever dated another guy before, but it's nice."

Iris is smiling brightly, "That's great! You have to bring him over some time! We all have a lot of catching up to do. Perhaps I'll get a Titans exclusive article. Find out what goes on in that fancy tower of yours."

Wally laughs, same old Iris. He tells her, "I'm pretty sure Dick has Wednesday and Friday off work next week. I'll see if he's free to come over. He misses your cookies."

"I'll tell my boss I'm working on an exclusive interview then," Iris glances at the time on her watch. It's midnight. She gasps, "Better make sure Wally actually went to bed. Jeez it's going to be confusing. Two of you with the same name."

"I better be going. Dick promised he'd get some sleep and I need to make sure he did," Wally says. He and Iris hug, squeezing each other tightly, before Wally gets up to leave.

"See you next week," Wally waves with a smile and then, just like that he's gone...in a flash.

"Dick?" Wally pokes his head into his boyfriend's quarters. The light are on, indicating he should be awake, and sure enough he is, chilling on his bed and reading his tattered old copy of 'Robin Hood.' It was his favourite book growing up. His parents always read it to him, according to what Dick had told him. He'd never met Dick's parents, of course, and he never will.

"Hey. I did nap, just for the record. Two hours," Dick says, putting a bookmark into the novel and patting the bed next to him, signalling Wally to come join him.

"I brought Kid Flash home..and I finally spoke to Iris," Wally tells him as he comes over and sits on the bed.

"Really? How'd it go?" Dick asks, hopefulness in his voice.

"She shook my hand and I sort of..tasered her."

Dick's eyes widen in alarm, "Oh. Is she okay?"

"Yes! It was just a little static shock, really. Not as bad as when I basically electrocuted you.."

"Good. That wasn't fun. I'm pretty sure I got the worst electric shock, thanks," The acrobat says sarcastically. It was a good thing Dick's suit had some protection from electricity. It has to, he uses electric escrima sticks after all.

"You're special, that's why," Wally says with a grin. He wonders if it really did mean something for a moment, then continues telling Dick about Iris, "She suddenly remembered me. But not just me...she remembers more than any of you guys or Barry does."

"Huh? Really?" Dick asks. Wally did mention not wanting to talk about some things in the original timeline.

"Yeah..she asked me how Linda was..and about my kids.."

Dick's mouth drops open, his blue eyes looking at Wally in shock. The book which he had previously still been holding dropped just like his jaw.

"It's weird, I know. I didn't mention it because I'm just..really not over it. It's been easier getting over Linda, because I've actually been able so see her, but.." Wally's facial expression is one of sadness, "I never got to say goodbye to them. I haven't seen them since I got caught in the speed force and...I never will again."

Dick sits up and wraps his arms around the other man, words spilling from his mouth like Niagara Falls, "I'm so, so sorry Wally. You should have told me sooner..but I understand why you didn't. I know it's not quite the same, but when Damian was killed I damn near became alcoholic. I didn't want to talk to anyone. He's my kid brother, but he also feels like my kid, you know? One minute he was fine, then I was knocked unconscious and...when I woke up his little body had been driven through with a sword and..I couldn't stop it."

"Damian came back though Dick, my kids aren't coming back. Ever."

"I didn't know he was coming back at the time, Wally," Dick whispers, still embracing him, "What..what were their names?"

"Jai and Irey. Twins," Wally tells him quietly, "Irey had red hair, like me, and Jai had dark hair like his mother. Both speedsters. Drove me crazy," he admits, chuckling a little in a sad way, "but I loved them."

"I wish I could remember them.." Dick says, sighing. He finally pulls away from hugging Wally and they both lie down on the bed, on their backs, "Tell me more."

"Roy...Roy had a kid too. A daughter, with an ex of his. The ex was a bitch but...his daughter was so sweet. Lian. She was friends with Irey," Wally tells him.

"I can only imagine the trouble they got into," Dick laughs, then goes quiet again. After a few moments he asks, "Did-did I...?"

He doesn't finish the question but the redhead understands. Wally shakes his head, "No. But you got engaged. Twice."

"To who?"

"Kory and Barbara respectively. Neither worked out as far as I can remember. To be honest, I've mostly been focused on trying to remember things from that timeline other than your crazy love life."

"Damn. I really do not have much luck with girls, do I?" Dick cracks up.

"It's lucky you like guys too, then," Wally jokes, turning his head to the side at the same time as his boyfriend.

"I know you won't break my heart, Wally. Well, I hope you don't anyways. It's been broken so many times it's probably being held together with duct tape right now," Dick says.

"How dare they," Wally scoffs, "Oh, hey. Iris also remembers you and she invited us over for coffee and cookies next week when you're off work."

"Does she-"

"Yeah, I told her about us. She mentioned that she always felt you had a little crush on me.." Wally teases, earning a lighthearted punch in the arm from Dick, who turns a similar shade to Wally's suit.

"Shut up."

"Did you?" The redhead asks, causing Dick to bites his lip.

"Maybe....yes. I had forgotten about it - and you - until you electrocuted me and then suddenly all those years of memories and feelings hit me at once. I tried to just push it away like I had always done but..I couldn't. Especially after I broke up with Shawna. So I spilled to Donna. She wasn't all that surprised," Dick tells him, "I uh, wasn't really planning on ever telling you how I felt."

"Oh," Wally says. He can kind of get where he's coming from though. Dick thought Wally was straight. Hell, Wally thought he was straight himself.

"I didn't want to lose our friendship over the awkwardness. I thought I had ruined it when I kissed you in the elevator..."

"You did look terrified. But, to be honest, if you hadn't I probably would have kissed you first."

"Would you?"

"Yeah. You're hot as hell, Dick. Everyone knows that. What I had passed off as 'strong platonic feelings' and the joy of having you back almost all year turned out to be a lot more than that," Wally says, making them both laugh.

"I can't believe you had no idea you were bi."

"Well it's not really my fault. Way my parents raised me, I was told gays were deplorable and bisexuals were evil, cheating, mythical creatures. I don't believe it though - Iris knocked it out of me. But..the fear of my parents made me..suppress it, I guess."

"Your parents suck. No offence."

"None taken. I never want to see either of them again."

Dick nods, secretly wishing he could make that choice but in the opposite way. He'd do anything to see his parents again, but they were good people (at least from what he remembered as a child and from what people told him), unlike Wally's parents. He can see where Wally is coming from. He had paid a visit to Wally at his parents' house in Blue Valley once when they were about twelve. He still remembers the looks he got from Rudy West as they went up to Wally's room to play snakes and ladders. After that, he only visited him at Iris's house, when Wally had moved in.

"I'm sorry, that probably sounded insensitive-" Wally starts apologising and Dick puts his index finger to the redhead's lips.

"No, it's okay. I get it, Wally," Dick says. They both glance up at the Flying Graysons poster that was above the bed. Dick always has one in the places he tends to stay in. There is one in his apartment and one in his old room at the manor.

"My parents might not be dead, but they're dead to me," Wally sighs.

"Well then, join the orphaned superhero club. I welcome you as a member," Dick says with a little smile.

"Thanks, Dick...by the way, why are your eyes so pretty?" Wally asks, causing his boyfriend to turn scarlet.

"Someone told me that I have my mother's eyes," he replies.

"Like Harry Potter?"

"Heh, yeah. Like Harry Potter," Dick chuckles, ruffling Wally's red hair, "You're Ron Weasley then."

"You seriously have a redhead fetish," Wally says with a laugh as Dick continues to run his hand through Wally's hair. Dick just hums in reply.

"C'mere again," Wally pulls Dick into his chest, "I know you're a cuddler."

"Yeah. This is nice," Dick says, closing his eyes. They lie tangled in each other peacefully for maybe two minutes, then the tower's alarms start sounding. The two men groan. A hero's work is unfortunately never done.
