《Cigarette Duet (Jonah x Adam)》Chapter 7

The loud alarm blared as Adam groaned, marking his time to wake up. It was 6:15 A.M. and he already had a splitting headache. He then remembered what day it was. Fuck, it's Valentine's Day. Adam went to the bathroom to freshen up, putting on his clothes for the day. He grabbed his wallet, his phone, and his backpack. His bus arrived earlier than most of the other buses, but it was whatever. He headed towards the kitchen, greeted by his cat standing by the doorway. He placed his bag on the table, rummaging through the kitchen to grab the cat food and some breakfast for himself. He scraped the cat food onto a paper plate, putting it on the floor for the cat. He grabbed a box of Poptarts from the cabinet and grabbed one of the bags, popping them into his toaster. He grabbed a water bottle while he waited, overthinking about his plan. Would Jonah somehow know it was him? How would he feel? It's not like Adam was confessing, no. Evelin and him had just broken up, anyway. He was having second thoughts, but he wanted to try. Just try to see if it could help Jonah in any sort of way. The toaster dinged as Adam grabbed his Poptarts and put them on a plate. He ate in silence as he was thinking about every possible outcome. His thoughts were interrupted by the honk of the school bus outside, which prompted him to hurriedly grab all his stuff. He left his house, hoping his plan worked. At least, in a sense.

Jonah wandered through the hallway aimlessly. He was just waiting for the bell to go off at this point, wasting time. He didn't know if Adam was still upset at him, or if he wanted to talk, so he didn't talk to him during 0 period like usual. While walking past the cafeteria for the fifth damn time, he finally noticed the little booth outside of it. The booth was something the student council had set up, where you could anonymously have valentines delivered to anyone of your choosing. Jonah was tired as shit, and he knew he'd probably regret it, but he dug a dollar out of his pocket and walked over. The girl running the booth was someone he and Adam knew, Sarah Heathcliff. They weren't necessarily friends, but they were close. "Well, look who's finally buying a valentine this year! Who's it going to?"

"Very funny. Uhm...Adam Murray."

"Ohhh you finally worked up the courage? Awesome, hope it goes well."

"Hah, I have my doubts but anonymity does help."

Sarah took the dollar from Jonah's hand and scribbled down Adam's name as Jonah walked away. His chest was pounding, was this a good idea? Whatever, Adam's had a few people who liked him, he probably wouldn't suspect it was Jonah, right? Speaking of the devil, Jonah saw Adam in the hall as well, though he didn't notice him. He quickly turned around, despite how much he wanted to talk to him. He really wanted to talk to him before class started, but he just couldn't. The bell rang, signifying it was time for Jonah to head to his first class. He reluctantly made his way to the classroom, wishing he could just skip school and spend time with Adam. All he wanted was Adam, yet he knew he'd never have him. Not more than just a friend, anyway. He didn't know HOW he truly felt. He didn't know who he even was. He didn't know anything about himself. Jonah had never truly wanted something more than this. He wanted to know who he was. He just wanted answers. Will he ever be okay? Will he ever find love? Will he ever know who he is? Whatever, he had other things to focus on. He would find out eventually, right?

Adam had made it to fourth period, and somehow worked up the courage to purchase a valentine for Jonah. The absolute mischief in the grin that Sarah gave him made him feel weird, but he didn't question. The bell hadn't rang yet, but it still kinda worried Adam that Jonah hadn't made it to class yet. What if he left earlier? Even though he'd JUST seen him, he was still overthinking. He always overthought things. He tapped his desk nervously, hoping he would show up. His face was burning, he was seriously having some doubts. The second bell rang, which was usually a minute before when Jonah usually showed up. Time was extra slow today, Adam felt like. His hopes were dwindling more and more by the minute, he felt like he had made a mistake. Maybe this was a bad idea after all... The final bell rang, and along with a few other students, there he was. Adam let out a sigh of relief, knowing Jonah was still here. He took his seat next to Adam and smiled at him. His usual grin was now just a soft, tired smile. It was welcoming, though. Every time Jonah smiled, it made Adam's heart race. He felt so warm and comforted by his presence alone, despite how rude and brash he could act at times. He was trying to become a better person, and Jonah was there for him every step of the way. He really felt like he owed Jonah the whole world for being so kind, and he wanted to repay him any way he could. Class started as the students settled down, and the lesson began. Adam wasn't paying too much attention to the lesson, too focused on...other things. Scribbling on his notes, just distracted. He had too much to think about, which is probably why he was failing maths. Well, before Jonah began helping him, of course. Jonah was a lot smarter than he or other people believed. Honestly, he'd probably be an A average student if it weren't for what he had told Adam. It's hard to focus on school when you're constantly tormented every day at home. He wanted to help him so badly, he wished he could. Jonah deserved the world and Adam would do anything to give him that. He looked to his right as Jonah looked to his left, and they made brief eye contact. Jonah giggled a bit quietly, giving Adam one of his stupid grins. Adam smiled back, his face burning with feelings of bliss. It felt like there were butterflies having a rave party in his stomach with how nervous he felt. He'd almost completely forgotten about the valentines, since he had all he needed right there. About 45 minutes into the class, the door opened as Evelin and Sarah, the council members who mainly organised this, came to deliver the valentines. Adam's heart pounded as they passed out names to the students who had gotten valentines, a few students here and there. Evelin then called Jonah's name, and Adam saw the shock and confusion form on Jonah's reddening face. Evelin handed him a valentine and Adam thought that would be the end of it, giving Jonah a smug "I told you so" look. However, Sarah then called out Adam's name, causing Adam to nearly fall out of his chair. As she handed him the valentine, Jonah smiled at him. Not a smirk or mischievous grin, but a genuinely warm smile. This...this made something inside Adam and he couldn't control how red his face had gotten. He tried his best to focus for the rest of class but he just couldn't. Luckily today was just for notes, he could get them from Jonah later. All he could think about was the valentine, Jonah, the valentine he'd given Jonah, those three thoughts cycling over and over. Time went flying fast now, and it didn't feel too long before the final bell of the day rang, signalling it was time to leave. Adam quickly put his stuff away, putting the valentine in his hoodie pocket so as to not lose it in his bag. Jonah was waiting for him, and when he was done he grabbed his arm and left the room with him. "Dude, I told you you're a good catch."

"Whatever, you still got one too! We both got one! What're the chances of that?"

Adam laughed and just followed Jonah out to the parking lot. "I hope you know I really am sorry and meant none of what I said. I never wanted you to leave, I let my anger get the best of me. I'm sorry."

"Don't worry about it, seriously. I forgave you before I even made it out of that door. I could never stay mad at you."

Adam smiled at that, as they reached the car. Jonah opened the door for Adam, as usual. Adam slid into his seat, Jonah closing the door behind him and making his way to the driver's side. Jonah sat down as well, closing his door and starting the engine. "You wanna hang out at my place? Before you have to go home, yknow."

"Yeah, that sounds nice."

Adam unlocked his front door, letting himself and Jonah into the house. His cat came running to him as he picked it up, making Jonah smile. "I see you've grown a liking to the cat." Adam laughed a bit, placing the cat back down on the floor. "You wanna just watch a movie or something?"

"Sure, why not?"

Jonah sat down on the couch as Adam looked through his movie collection. He didn't have that many movies, but it was enough to keep him entertained for long enough. He picked up The Princess Bride, it was a pretty good movie. He didn't think Jonah had seen it before, he'd probably like it. He took the disc and popped it into the player, turning on the TV and sitting down to the left of Jonah.

About halfway through the movie, Adam noticed Jonah was having trouble staying awake. He looked exhausted as shit, which was rather worrying to Adam. Now that he knew what Jonah was going through, he was worried something had happened last night. Taking a slight risk, Adam wrapped his arm around Jonah, not sure what he was trying to accomplish. To his surprise, Jonah didn't even say anything, instead leaning on Adam. "You tired, Jo?" Jonah didn't really say anything, mumbling something in response. Adam kind of leaned back on the couch, and Jonah rested his head on his chest. Eventually, they were both lying down on the couch, Jonah basically using Adam as a sort of pillow. He didn't mind, though. Despite how awkward it felt, he loved this. He didn't even realise how they were practically just...cuddling at this point. He'd only ever done this with Evelin. This felt so wrong, yet so right. He just wanted this moment to last forever. That's all he ever wanted, was to spend every waking moment with him. Adam ran his fingers through Jonah's hair, he loved doing that. Apparently Jonah liked it too, as he wrapped his arms around Adam. Neither of them even focused on the movie now. Jonah tried his best to stay awake, but Adam noticed it. "It's okay, Jo, you can sleep." Jonah again mumbled something, but he didn't even bother making it understandable, laying his head fully on Adam's chest and closing his eyes.

Adam felt like he was in heaven.
