"Oh my god!" Lucy gasps as Anna enters the lounge room.
"Shit Annie you look hot." Elliot says encouragingly.
The twins have never seen Anna in anything other than jeans and a t-shirt. Now seeing their roommate in a dress, no matter how casual, the two were completely shocked.
"Do I look ok? You guys are staring at me weird."
"Y-You l-look like a girl." Lucy stutters.
"Uh thanks Luce... what do I normally look like?"
"A guy." Elliot blurts out and his sister slaps him up side of the head.
"Gee thanks guys."
"Why are you even trying? I thought you hated this guy."
"I-"
"And didn't you already return his phone? Why does he want to go out with you again?"
"Well he-"
"And he is like a mob boss Annie that is totally not safe."
"Well-"
"I don't care how hot he is, he-"
"LUCY! Let me talk! I'm attracted to him. I'm going out with him for the hell of it. Now do I look ok?"
"You look great!" Lucy squeals pulling Anna into a hug. "What time is he picking you up?"
"Uh." Anna checks her watch, "about five minutes he said he'd send a car so Charlie will probably come up and get me."
Anna sit down on the couch with her roommates and they are chatting when there is a knock at the door. Anna moves to answer it but Lucy holds her down.
"No make him work for it. Elliot you answer."
"Luce it will be Charlie. I doubt Marcello would leave the limo."
"It doesn't matter." Lucy pushes her brother towards the door.
Elliot opens the door with a smile. "Can I help you?"

"Who the hell are you?" Anna gasps when she hears Marcello's voice.
"I'm Elliot, Annie's-"
"If the next word out of your mouth it 'boyfriend' I'll rip your throat out." Marcello growls.
"I think he likes you." Lucy whispers to Anna.
"Annie little help here." Elliot says from the doorway. Anna looks over to where Marcello is holding Elliot by the collar.
"Marcello that's enough." Anna says sternly and the Italian drops her roommate onto the floor. Elliot scrambles over to the couch. Marcello steps into the space wearing a three piece suit and Anna introduces him to her roommates.
"This is Elliot and Lucy."
"It is nice to meet you." Marcello says without taking his eyes off Anna.
After an awkward silence Marcello takes Anna's hand and leads her down to the waiting limo. Anna notices her skin tingle from his touch and tries her best to cover her blush. The two slide into the limo and Marcello instructs the driver. Once the limo is moving he rests a hand on Anna's knee.
"You look very beautiful tonight." Marcello whispers in her ear.
"Thank you." Anna shivers under his gaze.
"Although you beautiful no matter what you wear." He adds and Anna smiles at him.
"So where are we going?"
"Well I wanted to see you, but on Sundays I always spend the day with my brother."
"Oh I didn't mean to steal you away-"
"So I invited you for dinner."
"I don't want to intrude..."
"Nonsense you are my guest."
"You're sure?"
"Yes." Marcello takes Anna's hand and presses a kiss against her knuckles. He studies her for a moment. "Why is it my men could find nothing on you?"
"Tried doing a background check?" Anna clarifies.

"Yes. But it returned nothing."
"After...after my brother died I became obsessed with computers. I threw myself into that world. Without Charles I felt like part of me was missing so I deleted myself."
"Can I ask how he died?"
"Drunk driver. We were playing soccer in the park and the ball went out into the street. We were only ten. The driver was driving three times the speed limit Charlie never had a chance. I was hit too but sustained no real injuries."
"I'm sorry you had to go through that."
"I've never told anyone my story. Hell, Lucy and Elliot think I'm an only child. They don't even know who my parents are."
"You mean millionaires?" Marcello raises an eyebrow.
"Yes." Anna laughs. "Hard to believe I'm the heir to the Carmichael throne right?"
"Not at all." Marcello smiles at Anna as his phone rings. Offering her an apologetic smile he presses the phone to his ear. "Morretti."
Anna hears yelling on the other end of the phone. Marcello listens before hanging up.
"Is everything ok?"
"I'm sorry cara. We are going to have to make a small detour." Marcello leans forwards telling the driver where to go. Minutes later they arrive outside what looks like an abandoned warehouse. "I'll be right back. Stay in the car." Marcello's voice is stern.
Anna nods unsure what is going on. The driver hops out with Marcello but stand in front of the door. Marcello folds his arms over his chest walking into the warehouse. Anna watches him go. A phone ringing makes Anna break her gaze. Anna looks down to the seat and spots Marcello's phone. The screen is lit up and the caller I.D read 'Fratello'. Anna knows that is Italian for brother. Not sure whether to answer or not the phone rings out but a minute later starts up again.
Anna presses the phone to her ear, "Marcello's phone."

The Good Crash: An Oral History of the Post-Scarcity Collapse
"Don't we all feel, deep down, that we deserve the apocalypse?" APRIL, 2028—Global capitalism has collapsed. America has sealed itself off from the outside world, and inside its borders, a revolution rages. All it took was one incredible little machine. That machine turned into two, then four, then eight... like a virus, the replicators spread. As a work of oral history, The Good Crash features over 50 interviews with key witnesses to the events of 2027. The text is rendered in the words used by the interviewees themselves, with light editing for clarity and concision. As such, the book contains language and themes that are not appropriate for children.By capturing the voices to the people at the very root of the revolution, journalist and historian R. Vondersnitch has traced the origins and aftermath of the replicators' rapid spread. Crucially, the book also includes perspectives and testimony from those who attempted to stop the spread of the reps. "Some of these are heroes, too, in their own ways," the author writes in the book's introductory note.

I lived in India from 1984-2005, and wrote to my parents regularly about my adventures in Indian ashrams.
