《Forever》Part 4: Nairobi

"i grew up in Nairobi. My father was a Wakandan war dog and my mother was a librarian at the university."

"Nairobi?" asked Asira

"Kenya," answered Shuri, as she helped tie a piece of cloth she had torn from her sleeve onto Asira's head wound.

"Um yeah, so that's where I grew up," continued Idie. " Things were pretty normal for most of my childhood, but on my thirteenth birthday I had a nightmare. It was a bad one, like really bad."

"What was it about? asked Aneka.

"Strangely enough, I don't remember. All I remember is waking up and half my bedroom was frozen solid and the other half was on fire. The fire was not hurting my left side and the ice was not hurting my right. That's when I realized it was emanating from me."

"Had you ever been tested on as a child? any kind of serums or machines used on you?" asked Shuri.

"No, nothing like that," continued Idie. "My father was a Wakandan spy. If anyone was going to experiment on me, it would probably be you."

"Fair enough, to be honest I would really like to get to work studying your blood."

Aneka slapped Shuri across the back of her head.

"Ow! What was that for?"

Aneka gestured towards Idie, who was still staring at the ground. She had not looked them in the eye since they had destroyed the owl.

"I'm sorry," said Shuri. "You were saying?"

"I was scared, so I ran to my parents room. I opened the door to find a wall of flames. Not just the entire apartment, but the entire building was on fire. My parents... a lot of people died that night. I finally made it out of the building and the entire community had gathered to try put out the fire. They ran up to me offering help at first. Until they noticed the fire still flowing from my left arm, and the lack of burns on my body. First people said miracle. I liked that; the gratitude and relief in their eyes. But that didn't last long. Their relief turned to caution and then to fear. Then they said witch, and they started hunting me. I just ran, but I still couldn't control it. So the fire spread. Everywhere I ran I burned, and the more I burned the more I cried and the more I cried the more I burned. Over two hundred homes destroyed. Over 85 people..."

"Bast! How did you stop it? Where did you go?" asked Asira

"I couldn't stop it so I went to the river. You see I couldn't swim. So I thought if I just jumped into the water I could end it. The pain, the fires, all of it."

Aneka placed a hand on Idie's shoulder and she decided to rest her head on it for a second.

"But as I stood there, on the river bank, staring at the end, I saw her."

"Who?"

"A goddess with beautiful brown skin, brilliant blue eyes and a shock of white hair. She was standing on the sky. Then she began walking on the clouds and I knew things would be all right. Not then, not for a very long time but when she took me into her arms, I knew eventually everything was going to be all right."

"Who was she?" asked Asira.

"I still don't know."

"I do," said Shuri. "Yeah, she's my brother's... friend. Did she bring you here?"

Idie nodded as she wiped the fresh tears from her cheeks.

"Your brother... I'm sorry, I mean the King said I shouldn't tell anyone. He's been helping me and another boy control our abilities so something like Nairobi doesn't happen again."

"Wow... that is-"

"Crazy," interjected Shuri. "That's absolutely insane. I can't believe T'challa did not tell me about this."

"Anyway... I thought you guys should know what happened back there. I know I don't deserve...anything. but-"

"You need to stop with the self pity" said Shuri.

"Yeah, we don't do that here," added Aneka.

"You hurt people, sure. But it wasn't your fault." continued Asira. "That's like an act of Bast or something. All you need to do is make sure you do better moving forward and it looks like you are. You saved us back there. Shuri was as good as gone and you saved us all."

"If you feel bad about what happened then fix it," said Shuri. "You hurt people, well, save people. Control that power and save as many people as you can."

"I, cant-"

"No!" shouted Aneka. "What did we just tell you. We don't do that here!"

"Yeah, and what's this I business?" added Asira. "Its we, always we. We do things together in Wakanda."

Idie raised an eyebrow, looking from Asira to Shuri and then to Aneka.

"Oh I see," said Shuri. "Because we've been fighting all day you don't believe us. Well listen up okay; we're Wakandan. We're a proud people. We're a warrior nation. Family, tribe and nation are what matter most to us. Family, tribe and nation, in that order, always. So yeah we fight, but we love each other. I can argue with Asira and her stupid Jabari ways all day every day, but I would give my life to protect her."

"So would I," responded Aneka. "Every time."

"Our Nation is our tribe," added Asira. "And our tribe is our family. You get it?"

"I think so. Its just, after Nairobi... When people are faced with something they don't understand... I can't let anyone else know what happened here today."
