《Freaks & Geek》Chapter 4: Exhale

Harlow woke up early that morning as she knew she needed to ensure she caught the bus and then walked the mile and a half trek from the bus stop to the office building. She had done the route days after she first moved to ensure she was comfortable and smiled to herself as she looked at the tall glass skyscraper with the logo Draven, Inc. on top.

"Today will be a good day." Harlow said to herself before taking a step inside. She realized this company was very business centered and that went so far as to the wardrobe. When she was told that the attire was business professional Monday through Thursday and business casual on Friday even for developers, she almost fainted.

Developers were notorious for their jeans and graphic tees, but not here. Here, she had to thrift store dive and find goodies that could last her for two weeks of mixing and matching only to repeat again for the remainder of the month. She loved playing dress up as she was a girly girl at heart, but everyday seemed like a stretch. She looked down at the black pencil skirt she found for $10 with the red blouse she already owned and a black blazer that she snagged for $18 and smiled. Her black flats seemed to complete the out, but as she looked at the other woman walking around, she knew she needed to seriously step her game up.

She made her way to the receptionist who told her to meet the other new hires on the fifteenth floor. As she stepped into the elevator, Harlow couldn't help but feel her nerves get the best of her. The doors were about to shut when a hand stopped them. A good-looking brunette stepped in and gave her a genuine smile. His features were gentle, but handsome. His hair was cropped and his physique on the leaner side. He wasn't ridiculously tall, but she was 5'2" so everyone was a giant.

"Hi, I'm Declan. Declan McKay." He held out his hand and Harlow took it with a smile. "Harlow. Harlow Allen." His smile got bigger as he shook her hand. Harlow straddled between being a people person and disliking them altogether. She didn't trust easily at all and usually shied away from others unless their auras were too bright and demanded her attention. Friday night proved to be one of those occasions. She couldn't help but think about the strapping men that seemed to occupy her mind all weekend.

"I would say I haven't seen you around, but I haven't seen anyone around. Today is my first day." Declan interrupted her thoughts and Harlow's eyes widened in excitement. "Today is my first day too." He looked at her surprised. "Really? It doesn't seem like it. You look so put together he motioned towards her attire. I never owned a suit in my life and had to borrow this from my brother." He waved at the black suit he wore that was a little bit on the bigger side. "You look great, Dec." Harlow complimented and immediately noticed a rosy tint on his cheeks. "Thanks Lolo." Harlow chuckled at the nickname as they stepped off the elevator and knew immediately she was going to like him.

"Names and positions." The receptionist asked with a smile. She pointed them to a large conference room in the back once they provided their responses. They noticed three other people sitting in the glass room and exhaled. "You ready for this?" Declan asked her encouragingly. Harlow took a breath, but nodded. They entered the room and Harlow immediately noticed a beautiful Latin woman sitting in the middle row. Her brown hair was long and thick like her body and her fair skin meshed with striking features. She didn't know why, but she immediately wanted to sit next to her.

Declan followed her as they took a seat near the woman. "Hi, I'm Harlow. This is Declan." She introduced happily receiving a wide smile. "Calypso. Calypso Cortez." Harlow wanted to swoon. Everything about this woman seemed enticing, especially her name. "What department will you be working in?" Harlow asked after a beat and Declan was so thankful she was chatty, because he couldn't seem to form a complete sentence.

Harlow didn't know why she was so interested, but she could tell Declan was awestruck. "I'll be in Human Resources, so be on your best behaviors." She winked at them causing Declan to laugh albeit a bit too loudly. "Sorry," Declan squeaked as he gained the attention of the two men sitting in the front row.

Calypso chuckled before shaking her head. "You're fine, el cariño. What department are you two in?" Declan and Harlow both said "IT" at the same time and looked at one another shocked. "Seriously?" Declan asked with a grin. Harlow nodded happy that she at least had someone to talk to in the new environment.

Harlow wanted to rope in the Black and Asian men in the first row, but she could read their obviously closed off appearance. It was as if Calypso could read her thoughts and chuckled. "Don't worry about those pendejos. They're as rude as they seem. We don't need them joining the Three Musketeers." Harlow smiled at the prospect of having work friends and people to have lunch with.

Harlow didn't have the best luck with friendships and it was the weirdest thing. She made friends easily for the most part, but she could never keep them. It was as if something about her repelled them after a while or she got in moods where she didn't want to be bothered by people whatsoever. She wasn't going to do that this go around though. She liked Seattle and wanted to build a lift there with good people surrounding her.

Just as Harlow was about to say something to Calypso a tall woman walked in with two men behind her. Harlow was so shocked by how gorgeous the woman looked that she didn't see the men behind her, but she did feel them. It was a familiar feeling, but as her eyes left the striking woman and landed on familiar hazel and green eyes, she couldn't help but widen her own. She had no idea what they were doing there, but judging by the way everyone in the room sat a little bit straighter they were important and known.

"Welcome to Draven, Inc." The woman said with a smile that seemed fake. "My name is Lydia Lawson and I am the Vice President of Human Resources." Harlow could see Calypso visibly stir at the news and wondered if she got a vibe from her. "You will be split up according to your roles and taken to your specific department where your training will begin. You will all then have lunch with the CEO, CMO and CFO of this company to better learn about all things Draven, Inc. Feel free to ask whatever questions you might have about the company at that time."

"Gentleman," she said with a smile as she looked at Damien and Val. "Hello, I'm Val Terni the Chief Marketing Officer of Draven, Inc. I started this company with my two best friends and it's been thriving ever since. We're happy to have new blood here and hope this will be a great fit for you all." The woman gave him a small chuckle before looking back at them.

"There are a number of departments under Val's umbrella including IT. So, Harlow and Declan you will be under his domain." They simply nodded their heads. Lydia turned to Damien with a smile he didn't return. "My name is Damien Deville. I am the CEO of Draven, Inc. and look forward to the opportunity of working with you all." Harlow couldn't help but smile widely. She really wanted to laugh, because it was obvious Damien wanted to be anywhere but there.

"Calypso and Aiden, you two will be under Damien's umbrella. However, Calypso, you'll be reporting directly under me." Lydia said to her with a tight smile that Harlow peeped. "Luke," Lydia addressed the well-dressed Asian man. "You'll be working under our CFO's domain, but Mr. Lycaon couldn't join us this morning. You will meet him during the lunch." He nodded in understanding. "Val, can you please take your two workers to the IT floor?" Lydia asked him with a flirty smile that made Harlow roll her eyes. Calypso caught the action and chuckled lowly.

"Damien, please take Luke to Accounting." He nodded curtly before motioning for the young man follow him. He gave Harlow a quick glance and it set her body ablaze. "Come on," Declan tapped her as he stood up. It was obvious he didn't want to leave Calypso's presence and it made Harlow chuckle. "Have a good morning," Calypso said to her with a kind smile. They walked over to Val and Harlow couldn't help the slight shiver that washed over her. His gaze was deep and seemed to unravel her bit by bit. Lydia cleared her throat almost angrily and Harlow didn't know what her problem was. She did, however, notice the angry glare she shot at her.

Harlow felt herself getting agitated and that was never a good thing. There were times when Harlow knew she would blackout emotionally. There were instances where she was told after the fact that she had ripped someone to shreds verbally while visibly shook with anger and have no recollection of it. She could feel one of those moments coming up and knew that wouldn't be good or professional. She wasn't sure if it was the way Lydia glared at her or the way Lydia had her hand placed on Val's bicep, but she was slowly starting to see red.

"Lydia," Val said sternly while looking at her with an expression that Harlow felt could kill. Lydia removed her hand as though she was burned before clearing her throat and turning her attention to Calypso. "Right this way," Val finally said before placing his hand on the small of her back and stepping them out of the room. Harlow felt so many positive emotions just from his touch, but she snapped out of it and out of his embrace. She didn't want to get strange looks or be subject of any rumors now knowing that not only was Val her superior, he was also the CMO.

Val couldn't help the whimper that left him as Harlow moved away from him. He wanted to pull her back to him, but he followed her gaze and saw that she was looking at the people walking by. Val huffed before heading into the elevator. Harlow walked in followed by Declan who seemed in awe of the CMO. "Close your mouth," Harlow chuckled at him. "You'll catch flies that way." Declan blushed before looking towards her.

"Hush, Lo! Val Terni is the big times and it's truly an honor to just be in the same space with him. He is the example to be honest." Harlow smiled to herself as she looked at the back of Val's blond head. She knew a little bit about the history of Draven, Inc., but she had no idea that her mystery men were the founders of it. She wanted to talk to Val, but she didn't want Declan knowing she knew him after his stanning speech.

They rode the elevator to the top floor and Harlow couldn't help but gasp at the décor and layout. He walked them over to the left side of the floor where Harlow felt her excitement grow. Rows of computers sat in back of the room, while rooms of servers sat to the left and right. A short and wide man walked up to them with a happy smile on his face. "Curtis, these are your new hires Harlow and Declan. Please make sure they are trained efficiently and are available for lunch at noon."

The man nodded with the same smile present, but Harlow couldn't help but feel like there was a hint of fear in his eyes. "I'll see you in a few," Val said to them, but she knew he was specifically addressing her. Curtis watched their interaction with interest before looking at Declan who seemed enamored by the setup behind him.

"Alright, kiddos, this is where the magic happens." Harlow wanted to squeal with excitement. The laptops alone were the latest and greatest things and hadn't even hit the stores for the public to purchase. The room was filled with gaming systems, a lounge area, as well as a kitchen space stocked with snacks and drinks.

"I have seen your code and you both are quite talented, which is why I'm placing you on a project." Harlow was shocked that they were getting started so soon, but Declan seemed stoked. "The name is Curtis Jones and I am the Vice President of IT. I have a lot on my plate usually at all times, but my door is always open," he said pointing to a large office on the other side of the hallway. "You will be reporting directly to James Watkins who is the Director of IT. He's a brilliant engineer and will make a great mentor should either of you pursue that."

"He's pretty involved with the project I have placed you two on and will be working in the developers space instead of his office." He pointed to a section in the back with rows of computers. There was a total of four other developers working and Harlow frowned at the fact that she was the only woman as usual. "Come on, I'll introduce you to the team." Curtis walked / waddled over to the developers in the back of the room with a wide smile. "Guys, I'd like you to meet your new team members." All eyes were on them and Harlow immediately hated it.

"This is Declan McKay and Harlow Allen." Curtis pointed before turning back to the team. "I'm Jack Matthews," a redhead introduced. Harlow couldn't tell as his legs were hidden under the table, but just from his torso he seemed freakishly tall. "Manuel Lopez," a heavy-set Latin man with large glasses said with a smile that made her smile. "Killian Johnson," a shaggy blond introduced with a smirk that Harlow knew was mischievous. She could already tell he was the jokester and prankster of the group. "I'm Liam Lawson," the White and Asian male stated with a small smile. Harlow wanted to like him, but she soon realized from his facial features that he was so obviously related to Lydia.

They all seemed like good men from what she could tell and just hoped they were helpful teammates, because her focus was her job first and foremost followed by her baby. "It's nice to meet you all," Harlow said with a smile that she hoped came off as friendly and just that. She was used to working in this male dominated field and though it was a new job and company it didn't make navigating it any easier.
