Masked beneath thick hides of smoke, Buried beneath the piling waste,

Lost amongst looming skyscrapers— Lay a message delivered

Some billion years ago.

Right when the earth came to life

From a colossal bang of elemental mass,

A letter from the earth to earth;

A plea to impending humanity.

Amongst the grey storm clouds it lay,

A whisper amongst the clashing thunder— Begging for mercy from human onslaught, From the terrors we create.

Yet, despite the obstacles in our way

If only we dare to reach out,

Shedding the skin of an emotionless ​sapien Wasting away nature's wealth,

We'll find the message delivered eons ago And realise the repercussions of our actions. We hold the world in our hands;

And for years we've toyed and exploited it. Now's the time to put an end to

The seemingly eternal torment.

A new era begins with us retracting

Our greedy claws; sunken

Deep into the bleeding earth.

1. Global biodiversity deteriorated rapidly over the last 200 years. We're currently in the middle of what is called the 'sixth mass extinction' which is about 1000 times faster than the five that have already taken place. Ecologists warm that if the present trends continue, nearly half of all the species on earth might be wiped out within the next 100 years.

2. While biodiversity affects nature as a whole, it even has a direct impact on human life.

We depend on plants and animals for our daily requirements and they play an important role in climate control by absorbing the excess greenhouse gases that cause global warming.

3. The inflation in human population and the development in technology are perhaps the main reasons for this increasing loss of biodiversity. Pollution, urban sprawl and construction, over exploitation and depletion contribute to it.

While these facts can be overwhelming, it's important for us to be aware and take up necessary actions. Do your part by educating others and taking care that you don't contribute to this. Avoiding technology, transport and advancement is not a solution, but we must understand that it's important to minimise the harm we inflict on this planet and adopt the method of sustainable development, which merely refers to development and utilisation of resources by keeping in mind the needs of the future generations. Plant more trees, avoid using plastic bags, take care of your energy consumption and spread awareness!
