That night, Stevie was full from her dinner and couldn't sleep. She was tossing and turning for what felt like forever when she decided to get up and look at some old photo albums she had hiding away. In it, there were a million pictures of Stevie and Lindsey when they were younger, before they were Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. When they were just Stevie and Lindsey, the young couple who were in a band together. One photo in particular caught her eye. Lindsey was proudly standing in front of a blue Toyota Corolla parked outside their old apartment building.
Stevie closed her eyes and thought back to that time.
Early 1970s...
"No Lindsey, I've had enough! I'm sick and tired of working all day to just come home to you smoking dope on the floor! You never cook, God forbid you clean, and all your shit is just everywhere! You really are Mr. Useless!"
"Steph, I'm not just sitting around at home being 'Mr. Useless,' I'm actually making our album. Making something that will get us outta this shit hole! Maybe sometimes I feel like I need a break, too. You're not the only one doing anything around here!"
"I can't be here right now."
Stevie tripped on one of Lindsey's stack of records sitting on the floor as she stormed out of the apartment and slammed the door. She rushed down the stairs and into the Corolla parked out front. In a huff, she threw it in reverse and when she pressed the gas, nothing happened.
"Hm, that's weird" she thought to herself.
She took the key out of the ignition and back in again, hoping this would solve her problem. Once again as she tried to back up and leave, nothing happened. Curious, she decided to try putting the car in drive to see what would happen, carefully though as to not bump the car in front. She ever so gently pressed the gas and the car moved a few inches forward.

"You've got to be kidding me" Stevie said as she rolled her eyes and slammed the steering wheel with her palm.
She raced back up the stairs and jerked the door to the apartment open.
"Come back to yell at me more and call me Mr. Useless again?" Lindsey said as he was cleaning up the pile of records Stevie accidentally knocked over in her way out of the apartment.
"The car won't go in reverse"
"Huh? What do you mean?"
"Like it won't go backwards. Only forwards."
"Hmm, that's weird. Let's go check it out."
The couple went back out to the car, and again, the car wouldn't go backwards.
Lindsey looked over at Stevie who began to cry out of frustration.
"Well what are we gonna do, Linds? It's not like we can pay to fix this? Daddy's bus passes can only get us so far!"
Lindsey grabbed her face in his hands and gave her a reassuring smile.
"Well, I guess we'll only park where we can pull forward." Lindsey joked, and pressed a soft kiss to the top of her head.
Present day...
"Hey, wake up." Stevie whispered as she poked Lindsey's sleeping stomach falling and rising with each sound breath he took.
"Wh....what? Is something wrong?" he replied, only half awake.
"I'm sorry for calling you Mr. Useless" Stevie whispered to him as she snuggled into his side.
Lindsey chuckled and pulled her in tighter as the couple dozed off for the remaining hours of the night.

After the End: Serenity
We all want to believe we are heroes of our own story - unless we want to be the villain, of course. At the end of everything, the Final Reaper decided he hadn’t been a hero. Driven by a desire to right the wrongs he was subjected to, he killed everyone who wronged him or his people - which turned out to be everyone that wasn’t killed by someone else first. He'd won - but it was a hollow victory. Eventually, Order’s Voice found a way out. If the only existing being would agree to give up most of his power, the Voice could reset the multiverse to an earlier time with a few minor changes. Of course, the Voice couldn't ask it that way. It could only ask if the Final Reaper was willing to start over from when Earth was first brought into Order. It was an easy decision, and yet it wasn’t. Was he willing to go through eons of pain again to not be alone? Yes. In a heartbeat. Not that his heart beat anymore. Now it would. Perhaps he could even be a hero, this time. When he landed in his old body - more or less - on Earth, the Final Reaper once again became Thomas. He was both and neither. He needed a new name for a new life. Serenity. ------------------------------------------ While this is technically a System Apocalypse story, it's a System Apocalypse that is designed to have a large percentage of the population survive and prosper. There are a lot of problems that come with the appearance of the Voice, and it's entirely possible to lose. Earth has some special opportunities, but also special challenges. The first time around, Earth won the first round and lost the second. Serenity has ten years from when the Voice arrives to prevent that from happening. It will be a group effort; Serenity can't win alone - which is difficult for someone who's been alone for as long as he has. Of course, that's only his second priority. ------------------------------------------- Updates Daily A note on the nonhuman lead tag: He isn't human, and hasn't been human for a very, very long time (or maybe not long at all, depending on how you count it). He still thinks of himself as human, either way. The content warnings are mostly to give me room to write; this fiction is not intended to be edgy, but once in a while a character will swear or someone will get seriously injured. The cover image is a Chandra/Hubble composite image of VV 340 / Arp 302 / UGC 9618. While we're not going to space itself any time soon in the story, people from elsewhere are coming to Earth and Serenity will visit other planets. Plus, I like space imagery.
