《Christmas Wish (Completed)》Chapter 9

That was the last thing I wanted to tell Jack is how the cancer is fast spreading. It worried me that he would react differently and would worry more himself, but he needed to know. What shocks me is when he is fast to agree to the treatment I think would be best for Nicolas along with what Dr. Moore told me could be done.

Nicolas had been such a wonderful patient and during the chemo, I kept checking his vitals. Never once did he complain about it and thought it was just the coolest I let him have a root beer soda so early in the morning.

Now, I am standing by the nurses station again working on documenting everything that happened from the first treatment.

"He is just to cute." Jewels giggles.

I give her a look because it is random even for her to just start with something like that.

"Your patient." Jewels gives me a duh face.

"He is very sweet and such a wonderful little boy." I smile.

"Not to mention his father." Jewels raises her eyebrow.

"Just a patients father, Jewels." I whisper.

"Keep telling yourself that, sis. The way you looked at him this morning when we were setting up tells me you may feel something that is not just the patient doctor relationship." She takes off with papers before I could respond.

I have to be careful. Sure I have looked at Jack and he has an amazing body and through everything seems to be a great guy. Part of me wonders if he is like this all the time or just because his son is sick. Heck, I do know some about them from being in the room during treatment.

I learned Jack is a photographer and owns his own little business. Along with Tony who is just an extremely close friend of Jack's but Nicolas calls him Uncle Tony.

"How did the first round of chemotherapy go this morning?" Dr. Marshall walks up.

"The patient done well with vitals staying steady during the treatment and so far stable too."

"Dr. Moore spoke with me on the plan you two came up with. He was very impressed with how you knew much of what to do without any actual help or questions." Dr. Marshall smirks.

I don't reply because I don't want to gloat over the kind words. The last thing I want to be is big headed because that doesn't help patients. The only thing that does help is by learning and studying all that a person can.

"The next plan depending on how he fairs the rest of the day and feels, will be to do a total of three to four rounds of intense chemotherapy. Each round will be divided out and he will have to undergo treatments every other day. If we can destroy enough cancer cells then Dr. Moore will be able to perform a stem transplant for the patient."

Dr. Marshall nods. "Children are resilent to many things an adult is not."

"I just don't want to push to hard. Dr. Moore stated that we could cut the chemo up even more to where he would just do daily treatments."

"But?"

"I feel like for Nicolas that would be extremely harsh on him, after just getting his anemia levels at almost acceptable ranges." I hand the papers to Dr. Marshall on the lab work.

Dr. Moore steps up and glances at the lab work, having caught most of the conversation between Dr. Marshall and I.

"These are this mornings reading?" Dr. Moore hums.

"Yes. The numbers are still down. The option that you suggested with the daily rounds, still isn't making sense to me how it would help." I rub my forehead some.

"Let's have a seat in the doctors area." Dr. Marshall takes the labs and I grab my computer with Dr. Moore following suite.

The three of us talk and go over everything. Dr. Marshall sees my line of thinking as well as Dr. Moore. We all want the best outcome for Nicolas. There will be another blood draw after the next round of chemo he has the day after next.

If the numbers are down then we will continue the line of treatment that we are on. If the numbers are the same then we will try splitting the doseages to where he gets a round every day. Once his numbers get down to at least half from where they are now, then Dr. Moore can perform the transplant.

Dr. Marshall leaves to check on the other interns. While Dr. Moore and I look to see what a donor would need to have for the stem transplant for Nicolas.

"So, I have found a candiate for the donation and have some of the cells still from a recent donation for another patient that didn't make it to the transplant. They are currently frozen, but it would be best if we can find a close donor to the patient instead for fresh cells." Dr. Moore thinks over.

"I could speak with the patients father? If Mr. Winters is wanting to be a donor we could draw blood to see if he is a match."

"That would be good if so, because we could harvest stem cells from him and transplant to the patient same day."

"We?" I question.

"Of course. You are the one who seen this patient through this far and gave him the fighting chance he deserves. Unlike the previous Oncologist that had his case. So it would only be fitting to have you in the rooms while everything is done, plus during this type of transplant the patients are awake but very relaxed through. The patient has a bond with you and trusts you as his Doctor."

I nod slowly.

Never thought being within pediatrics would a Doctor get to experience all of this. It honestly is like getting to do a bit of everything. The only case I have been on is Nicolas's but the calling to be a Doctor in peds just feels right. For now, this is where I will stay because I am seeing his case through, but I think I have officially made my choice in the field I will be working in.

Dr. Moore hands the lab work back and is on the way to his other patients. I am left alone in the doctors area, and gather my things up. Looking at the monitor showing at the nurses station, Nicolas's vitals are looking stable on it.

"I am going to grab some wraps, Jewels. Need anything?"

"No. Thanks though sis." She smiles.

I walk to the elevator and make my way to the cafeteria. I pick up a couple of extra wraps and pay for them before walking back to the peds floor. I know Jewels will want a wrap in a bit and saves her a trip, plus I grab some for Jack and Nicolas if he wants something a little more solid now.
