《Christmas Wish (Completed)》Chapter 1

Rounds. Eat. Sleep. Repeat.

That is the never ending cycle to my life currently. Not that I would change it for anything in this entire world. I knew at a young age this is what I wanted to do, being a doctor and it has been some of the best decisions I have made in my life.

Holding my phone, I see a text from my parents showing that are together with the Effiel Tower behind them. They have been traveling all over the world after they both got to retire with my Dad being a doctor in a huge hospital two towns over. Their house is still there for when they choose to return home and rest some, before going for more. My parents had me late in life along with my sister.

I swipe over to see my sister, Jewels, sent me a text as well wanting to grab dinner tonight together. I reply back and let her know I am all for it after I get off. She is a nurse in the same hospital I am currently doing my internship in.

So in a way the medical field has been in my blood my entire life. Jewels wanted to be in the field but got impatient with school but enjoys being a nurse. It suites her, just as being a doctor suites me.

Dropping my phone in my pocket, I sign in the time clock and click for me to clocked in. I grab my laptop and the closest empty clip board to put paper in it. With a short walk out of the back and down the hall, I see the other fellow intern doctors.

"Do you know what floor we will be on today?" Massie asks, looks at me.

"Nope. Dr. Marshall didn't say it last night." I push my hair back and tug on my lab coat.

Massie has been a great friend since high school and we both got accepted into the same schools, then surprising internship. She has her field picked out and pending boards may have an offer to work here in the hospital as an OBGYN.

"Maybe we will be on a different floor and a case will speak to you?" Massie hands me paper.

"Might happen. I just like it all so far." I smile.

"You have to pick a field before boards, Holly."

I nod slowly. My issue is boards are fast approaching and I don't have a set field of practice yet. Not much longer to choose because boards are right at Christmas for us. Three months is all I have left to choose before I get stuck with primary. I need to choose soon to learn the surgeries needed, especially if I choose OBGYN, other fields I can refer patients to the suregeon on the floor but I will still be expected to learn the basic surgeries, if I want to work in the hospital. Which is what I am wanting.

General practice I don't have to learn surgery. Obestritics I have to know surgery, along with just about any other field. Cancer is a field I have thought of but then I will be working in under the surgical oncologist until I could learn the lesser of surgical cancers that I could do myself.

It all just makes my mind spin because each field has it's own personal touch and experience there.

"Alright, we will be up on the pediatrics floor today. For those of us that have not choosen a field of study." Dr. Marshall looks to me.

He knows me well though and the one time he has spoke with me personally, Dr. Marshall had said he was the same with not knowing what to choose. Dad and Dr. Marshall had actually interned together when they was younger and became friends. Which is why I was glad he was our mentor here, not because I just know him but also because his love for medicine.

We take the elevator and ride up to the pediatric ward. Dr. Marshall guides us over to a doctors space and makes us gather in together.

"Now, pediatrics can be trying at times. You must remember there are many sick children here and their parents are frieghtened, making their reactions worse at times which the kids will pick up on. Being here it is not just the patients that you have to tend to but also the parents. It is part of our job to not make their fears worse. Always watch what you say and the way you word things." Dr. Marshall.

"Isn't this floor mainly just stuffy noses and high fevers?" Jerson asks. At times her manner is alarming, but in front of a patient you would never know it. Partially it is because once she is done with boards, she is packing up and moving out to the west coast due to job offers with big money.

Dr. Marshall huffs. "No it is not. On this floor you will find a range from children with high temps due to illness, but also children that have cancer, child recovering from a intenstive surgery, or are having to stay here through therapy due to severe breaking of the bones. There is even a few children here that are sick and we as Doctors have to find out what is causing it."

Dr. Marshall leads us out of the space and we go up to the first room, bypassing the nurses station. Jewels waves at me and Massie. I smile at her as I walk by. She loves working here in peds, which has led her to try and talk me into being a doctor on this floor with the openings they have.

We go through several of the patients rooms for rounds. Dr. Marshall having one of us check vitals and go over the chart to see how the patient is progressing. Massie is even getting to discharge her first patient ever. I await for the day of getting to know that feeling, but also the anxiety that comes with it on if it was the right choice or not.

Dr. Marshall brings us to a room but turns to us.

"This will be the very first pediatric case any of you will have seen where cancer is involved. Remember bedside manners, as this case is not easy. The current Oncologist believes it is terminal."

He sighs, before knocking on the door, and all of us walk in. I listen to Dr. Marshall go through the normal greetings and explain we are basically still doctors in training and making sure it is fine we are here. My focus is on the young boy on the bed, with a man sitting on the bedside holding onto the child with sad eyes.
