《Hunting His Prey》Chapter 9

I can hear the tree snapping increasingly, as time goes by. Closing my eyes, I say a silent prayer to any of the Gods up there that can hear me. The smell of fresh blood has them popping open. I look out my window, checking the side mirror, but I cannot see anything that is going on up at the road. I'm too far down the side of the mountain.
The light of the moon catches my attention. I focus on the beauty of the almost full moon. There's a blue hue to the normal plain white, making it extraordinarily beautiful tonight. My grandfather used to tell me stories when he was alive about the Moon Goddess. Tell me of her ferocity, the strength she withheld over all others, and how she created the werewolves to protect the humans of the world.
Unfortunately, the humans did not well receive our kind. Over the years, the gratitude became jealousy, and as time moved on that jealousy turned to fear. Now we don't let a lot of people know what we are. It's forbidden, but my uncle never followed the rules. Not even the ones of his alpha, his own brother, my father had given to his pack. A coy smile forms along my lips thinking of my uncle, his devilish smiles, and mischievous nature. If this is really the end, I'm going to miss him dearly.
I know most people would think about their parents at a moment like this, but my mother died shortly after I was born, and my father and I never really got along. We have never been close. In fact, the only thing that man has ever done for me is make me nervous and afraid. With his solemn green eyes, the ones I look at everyday in the mirror staring back at me. It's the only thing I got from the man, the color of my eyes. Everything else is a perfect likeness to my mother.

A lone tear falls down my cheek. I wipe it away as I look to the moon once more. "Dear Moon Goddess, I beg of you to watch out for those that I love. Help Claudette make it through the hardships I know are about to come her way because of my actions tonight. Let her forgive me for what I have done to change her life forever. I just didn't want her to lose her life so young." I bite my lip with the pain the thought of never seeing her or Lilly again brings me.
The tree the vehicle is stuck on snaps once more, causing the car to slide further over the trunk of the tree. I know any second this tree will give way and I'll be sliding down the rest of the treacherous mountain, to my death. I close my eyes, not wanting to see as it happens.
My thoughts move to Zane, us as children. How mischievous the two of us were always together. The trouble we would get into, and the way he would speak his mind to his parents and my father. How he would sneak into my room at night, after a beating he would receive for our actions. He would open my window, and smoothly climb into my room. Sometimes you could see the murderous rage in his eyes, as he would look at me. The things my father did for punishment was unethical to say the least.
Zane would walk further into the room, untie me from my restraints along my bed, and look me over. Once he had all my injuries in account, he would make his way to the bathroom for some rags and ointment. He would fix me up, growling the entire time, and all I would be able to do was look down at my hands while he worked.

Once he was finished, he'd pick up the mess, and come back to lay with me on my bed. We'd look into one another's eyes until I slowly fell asleep. By morning, when the sun would shine through my window, he was gone, and my uncle would knock on the door. He'd announce himself, and when he walked in his eyes would find me laying there. A solemn look held deep in his irises as he'd look me over. Coming to my bed, he'd sit beside me, and hold my hands, fighting back tears from his anger.
I know he wanted to do something to his own brother. That's not how it works in the pack, not in our world. The alpha is in charge, what he feels is right goes, and there isn't anyone that can say a thing about it. Shortly after my father would see my open door, burst in, and degrade his younger brother for untying my restraints and fixing me up without his permission. He never told his older brother the truth, he'd tell him off, and as my father walked away, he'd turn and wink at me. He knew who really did that the night before, but he kept it a secret just for me.
Looking to the moon once more, I say a silent prayer for my uncle. Hoping someday, sooner rather than later, he will be able to overpower his brother, and be the alpha the pack really deserves. When I'm done, I lay my head back, feeling more ready than I must face whatever is about to happen. I tighten my hold on the seat, fear coursing through my body, as I tighten my eyes shut.
Taking a few deep breaths, I secretly hope it'll go by quickly. That I won't feel too much pain when it happens. If I'm lucky it'll kill me as soon as I hit the water at the bottom from the impact. Just as I think that I hear one last snap, and the car begins to fall. I expect to hear it falling to my demise, but to my utter shock it's not moving another inch. I pop one eye open, to see the big tree that was once in front of me falling down the mountain, but the car I'm sitting in is held in place.
Looking to my side, I can see why. There's a big hand covered in blood holding the vehicle in place. I hear an aggravated grunt, as I hear someone yell, "I got her Zane, Get your ass down here!" Within seconds, my passenger door is ripped from the hinges, and tow muscular arms pull me from my seat without any complications.
I don't question it, I simply wrap my arms around Zane's neck, as I bury my head into his bare chest. I feel his muscles extenuate with each movement his body makes. Breathing in his earthy scent, I feel safe for the first time in a long time. Feel like I'm finally home.

Candor: The Forgotten House
*** Please read note below *** As a 16-year-old mage from a powerful family, Jayce Candor had known from a young age what his future would hold. As the fourth son in his family the possibility of him becoming the heir to the household was very small. But, with his talent as a mage, his potential accomplishments in the military could lead to titles of nobility and political power. However, on what would otherwise be an unremarkable night, everything he had ever known, the only people he ever cared for, and all of the plans for his future were destroyed. House Candor, one of the six great houses that helped build the Eldoran Empire had been erased from history. By imperial decree, all those bearing the name Candor were hunted down and executed as traitors of the Empire. With no home, no family, and only death waiting for him, Jayce decided to escape north to the uncharted Northern Territories to begin a new life. Forced into situations he was never prepared for and trying to cope with his past, Jayce tries to find safety in a place spoken about only in legends. There for the first time, he will make true friends and find people he will come to see as family. He will encounter strong enemies, build powerful alliances, and become a person his ancestors would be proud of. But surrounded by creatures he thought only existed in tales and pressed by the Empire’s constant expansion, Jayce’s safety may be only an illusion. To survive a world fraught with danger Jayce will need to grow stronger with each new experience and rebuild his once forgotten house. ********************************************************************** Note: The story starts slow. Although there is more action as the story progresses, there is a fair amount of introspection and character introduction in the first 30 chapters. Jayce is the main character, however, other characters play a large role and the story is seen through multiple POV's. This is a draft, it is not a finished work. This is not a story that focuses on an OP MC who beats up on weaklings. At times there can be a fair amount of internal monologue. Some of that may be edited out when I rewrite the story. I decided to keep it in the draft because I think it is better to have too much material rather than too little when I edit. Constructive criticism is appreciated as it helps in the editing and rewriting process. Check out my other story Shattered Mind here

Four story anthology
[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] [participant in #NaNoWriMo] Preface: This fiction will contain four different stories set up as a challenge for myself and to get better at writing. The challenge for royal road writathon is a 55.555 word goal while the nanowrimo challenge is 50.000 words. Reader suggestions is turned on, feel free to point out errors I missed and I'll fix them up! Chasing sun, napping softly: Cultivation/Xianxia genre. Some parts will poke at the ridiculousness of the Xianxia gerne. We follow the life of a magical fox monster, who doesn't like how the cultivation world works. Said beast seems to have more knowledge than is usual for normal magical beasts. In it's infinite wisdom it decided to search for the main character of the cultivation world to have a cozy and safe place beside him. Our fox will act as a "wise beast" to coast along on the main characters rise to greatness, all for peace, happiness and that amazing napping spot in the sun. The challenges for myself with this story: Writing in first person. Comedic effect between talking vaguely and sounding wise. The cost of heroism: A story more centered around fights and mental health of hired mercenaries/heroes. The world is infected with an eldritch corruption. Humans are trying their best to explore and clear out wilderness and the dungeons hiding in them to establish new cities. Lords seek for hired hands to do the professional work. Thanks to the setting, the story will show how awful pasts are the norm and how pragmatic people became thanks to that. People exchange their sanity for riches, fame and gods acceptance. Interpersonal relationships change drastically and quickly. The challenges for myself with this story: Writing grim scenes/imparting a feeling of how grim the world is. Writing fight scenes. Showing different mental states. Describing their influence on people during fights, walks or even after successful or failed campaigns. Who will be the next powerhouse? : A story about a gaming show, it's host Staan and the different participants. Stereotype characters, stereotype backstories, silly challenges and quizzes. The winner of those challenges gets powerups for their power system. Be it magic, ki, psychic power or anything else imaginable and unimaginable to reach the power of gods. The challenges for myself with this story: A softer tone for storytelling. Making the reader smile and enjoy themselves. A different try at slice of life story. I was left behind on earth as my family conquered another world and enjoys riches, but that's okey because I got a cheat too! : Stereotypical Isekai story parody twisted into an Urban Fantasy story. The challenges for myself with this story: Writing over the top and overdramatic scenarios/scenes Writing in first person. Walking into stereotypical scenarios and making them more dramatic/giving them a twist. Different type of humor.
