《Hunting His Prey》Chapter 6

When we make it to Claudette's car, I'm secretly celebrating inside. I drop her hand as I turn to look at her for the first time since I pretty much dragged her out of the club. She's looking behind us, her hands shaking as she tries to unlock the car. "Claudette, you okay over there?" She stops her endeavor, dropping her hand and turning to face me head on. "I just..." She grows quiet.

I don't rush her with speaking about her thoughts and emotions. I know this is a lot to take in. When she first heard about what I was, she was surprisingly cool with it. The most she did was jump up and down in her giddiness and ask me a bunch of questions. Some made me flat out laugh. You could tell the girl had watched a lot of television and read a lot of fictional stories.

"I never thought I'd meet any of the males that came from your old pack." Her words bring me out of my thoughts as I look back at her. I can see a mix of feelings clear as if it were bright and sunny outside. She's scared, with a hint of curiosity held deep in her eyes. I can see her pulse point at her throat beating extremely fast. The adrenaline pumping through her body is what's keeping her going in the moment. If it weren't for that I'm almost certain the poor girl would faint.

"I know they can be scary when you see them in their wolf forms." I try to relate how I feel at least. See, I feel there is something wrong with me personally, because I haven't changed since the night of my seventeenth birthday. I've tried it a few times, deep in the woods, that are in back of the house we live in, but it's as though my wolf doesn't wish to come out.

"You're telling me, is it always this intense?" My brows furrow with her question. I see her lick her lips, before turning back around to face her car. This time the shaking in her limbs is practically nonexistent, making it easier for her to unlock the car, and open the driver side door. "I just meant the chase. It seems like it's quite intense when you have another wolf in the mix."

"Yeah, I suppose so." My voice comes out in a mumble. As I make my way around the car to open my door. I slide right in, and without looking at my best friend, I buckle myself in, looking out the window into the night.

"Hey," I feel her hand on my shoulder. "What is it, Penny?" I can hear the sincerity in her tone. She really wants to know what could be bothering me. No matter how much I try to hide what I'm feeling, she and her aunt can always read me like an open book.

I take a deep breath, praying the tears welling up in my eyes don't fall as I turn to face her. The truth is I haven't told a soul about how I haven't been able to change in almost a year. I bite my lip, indecision clouding my thoughts. I don't know if I should open to her about this. Not because I don't trust her, but because I know there is no real way, she can help me.

"Sometimes talking about it, even if the other person won't completely understand what you are going through, can help in an extreme way." Her words bring a smile to my lips. I wipe under my eyes, making sure no tears fall. "Are you sure you're not a werewolf. I swear you can read my mind almost better than anyone." I hear her laugh out right, filling the once quiet car with the melody of her giggle.

"Nah, I don't need to be able to read your mind girl. Just your facial expressions. Of course, it doesn't hurt that I know you oh so well." She removes her hand from my shoulder and starts up the car. "If you don't want to tell me that's okay." Her words fall away as she waits for me to collect myself. When I do I look at her and see her staring me down. "Just know no matter what, I am here for you, and I love you with all my heart and soul." She crosses her heart with her fingers, showing me just how much she means what she says.

I appreciate it, her love and friendship, more than she will ever truly know. I go to open my mouth to tell her so, but she stops me with placing her hand up in front of my face. "No, you're not ready to tell me yet. When you are I'm here for you." She winks at me and faces her body forward. I watch as she places the vehicle in reverse, and lay my head back, closing my eyes as we gradually move away from the club, and the wolves. Especially the one that is hunting me for sport.

I turn down my thoughts, so I can listen to our surroundings. So far, everything sounds good, I can only hear Claudette tinkering with the car radio, looking for a good station. "Ugh, I really need to get something better for this old Junker." I hear her complain to herself as most of the stations come out with nothing but static. Making me give off a giggle. I hear her growl out loud before she says, "fuck this stupid thing."

I can't hold back; I laugh so hard I hold my stomach. "It's not funny." She taps my shoulder with a small laugh of her own. "Then why are you laughing too?" I open one eye to look at her. She looks at me out of the corner of her eye, before rolling them, "go to sleep. I'll wake you when we are home." She grumbles as a response.

I do as she says, tuning everything out I try to get a little shut eye. Facts are my nerves are like a live wire right now. I don't really think I'm going to be able to sleep much at all tonight unfortunately. "What the..." I hear the sudden worry of her tone as my eyes pop open and I sit up.

Outside of the window is nothing but fog. "Where did this come from?" I wish I had an answer, but I have no idea myself. "Slow down okay." I tell her as my hand shoots out and touches her arm. She simply nods at me showing me she heard me. I can smell the fear emanating the car.

I'm not sure if it's coming from her or myself. Something is not right here. That's the last thought I have as Claudette screams at the top of her lungs, as she slams down on the breaks. My head whips across the air, and I briefly see a huge brown wolf, and at least a pair of three yellow eyes before she swerves the vehicle.

I don't remember much, other than hearing my best friend scream and the squeal of the tires of the car, before I see the railing on the side of the road disappear. The next moment, we are flying down the mountain side. Somehow, I get my hand wrapped around hers, as the car crashes into the bottom of a tree.

I briefly look at my best friend, the look of fear on her face my last visual before everything goes black.
