《Seeing Double》8

I just landed at Frankfurt Airport after leaving from the Hannover airport, which is an hour away from Wolfsburg, so I have 1 quick flight down and one long ass flight to go.
During my long ass layover before my flight to America I text some of the girls, who are surprisingly still up at this time of day. It's 9 in the morning here in Munich so it's midnight where the team is.
As I'm eating breakfast I get a phone call.
"Hello?"
"Hey Astrid."
"Hey Hope. What's up?"
"Nothing much. Just got done talking to Kelley figured I should call the other twin."
"I was going to ask why you were up at this ridiculous hour."
"Is it not late for you?" Hope asks.
"I'm still in Germany. We had a game yesterday and we lifted the league trophy so I stayed and I'm flying out today."
"Oh how'd you do?"
"We won 5-0."
"That's good...Astrid are you staying in Germany after the World Cup?"
"I'm not staying with Wolfsburg, but I actually haven't decided on where I'll play next."
"Why not Wolfsburg?" Hope asks.
"I'm out of contract and they've already found my replacement...actually they have two. The starting German national team keeper and one of the English national team keepers."
"Where would you go then?"
"Um I have offers from PSG, Lyon, Barca, and Man City."
"Are you going to accept any of those offers?"
"At the moment probably not, I'm kinda ready to be done with everything."
"So retirement?"
"Possibly, but..."
"But?"
"I don't know if I want to come home."
"What do you mean?" Hope asks.
"Hope I have a life in Germany. I have friends, a job outside of soccer. I don't know if I can just drop all of that and move back home."
"You know if you don't Kelley won't talk to you ever again."
"Yeah...I know...I just don't know what to do."
"Just talk to Kelley about it."
"I will." I say. "Hey Hope?"
"Yeah?"
"Can I ask you something?
"Sure."
"Promise you won't get mad?"
"I promise Astrid."
"Are you ashamed to be with Kelley?"
"What? No. Astrid what the fuck? How could you ask that?"
"Why doesn't the team know you two are engaged?" I ask and Hope sighs.
"Kelley's nervous about what the team will think."
"Do you care?"
"I care about Kelley. That's it. Everybody else's opinions don't matter."
"Do you want me to talk to her about it?"
"If you want to you can. I'm prepared to wait forever for that woman." Hope says then my flight is called.
"Hey Hope my flights boarding so I gotta go."
"Alright i'll talk to you later."
"Sounds good...and Hope?"
"Yeah?"
"Thank you for making my sister happy."
"It's my honor Astrid. Thank you for giving me your blessing to marry her. You were the one I was most nervous about."
"Good. I did my job then."
"Yeah...well hey have a safe flight."
"Thanks. Bye Hope.
"Bye Astrid.
I hang up then head to the plane and find my seat and once I'm seated I pull out my phone.
Me: We need to talk when I land
After I send that text my phone rings.
"Hello?"
"Hey Astrid."
"Hey Toby." I say with a smile. "What's up?"

"Nothing." Tobin says. "Just calling to hear your voice."
This girl.
"I thought I was supposed to be the flirty one in this relationship." I say while blushing.
"Thought I'd switch it up."
"You should do it more often...but only with me." I say causing Tobin to chuckle
"You're the only one I'll use the Heath charm on."
"Good...You know I'm kinda sad I missed out on that dinner you girls had a couple nights ago."
"Why's that?" Tobin asks.
"I wanted to see how beautiful you looked in person."

Well 11 hours on a plane sucks.
After I get off the plane I grab my stuff the head to the rental car place. Once I get my rental car I make the 40 minute drive to the hotel. When I get to the hotel Jill tells me where to go so I go to the room then get my stuff and head to the room I'm sharing with Christen.
After I put my stuff away I head to Kelley's room and knock on the door.
"Hey Alex can I talk to Kelley alone for a minute?"
"Yeah sure." Alex says then looks at my twin. "Kels I'll be with Christen."
After Alex leaves I put the do not disturb sign on the door then go and sit on Kelley's bed and face her.
"We need to talk about a couple things." I say.
"Okay. What's up?"
"First why don't the team know you're engaged?"
"I'm nervous to tell them."
"Why?"
"Well with how Hope's time here ended I don't know if they'll be happy for us."
"Kelley they love you and Hope, of course they'll be happy for you two. Besides if they aren't then they aren't your real friends...Let me ask you does Hope make you happy?"
"Of course."
"Does she treat you well."
"She treats me like a queen."
"Do you love her?" I ask.
"With every fiber of my being." Kelley says.
"Then who gives a fuck what other people think. It's your life and if Hope is who you want to spend forever with then do it."
"I know."
"Just think about it and talk to Hope."
"I will. What else?" Kelley says causing me to sigh.
"So my contract with Wolfsburg is up now?"
"Okay?"
"And now I have to decide what to do."
"What do you mean?"
"Come back to America or stay in Germany."
"Well obviously you're going to come home." Kelley says.
"Kelley I have a life in Germany, I have friends there, hell I have a fucking job. It's pretty difficult to just uproot after being in a country for 11 years Kelley."
"UGH. YOU'RE SO SELFISH." Kelley yells.
This is one of the problems me and Kelley have. When ever we have an argument it can turn heated very quickly.
"FOR FUCK'S SAKE KELLEY. FOR ONCE, PLEASE, FOR ONCE IN YOUR FUCKING LIFE CAN YOU THINK OF SOMEONE BESIDES YOURSELF." I shout then get up and slam the door as I leave.
Once in the hall I see the whole team looking out of their rooms
"Mal you wanna cash in on that thing we talked about?" I ask.
"Yep." Mal says then goes into her room and gets her stuff. "Should we get some other people?"
"Yeah." I say then look at the team who all still have their heads out the door. "We're going to dinner and I have 3 spots in my rental for whomever wants to come. Also I'm buying."

"DIBS." Emily shouts.
"I'll go." Sam says.
"Can I go?" Lindsey asks.
"Sure." I say then the look at Alex and Christen. "Check on Kelley please."
They both nod then the four people going to eat with me follow me out to the car and we get in.
"Alright Mal I need you to find a bar, or a pub, or something with alcohol." I say.
"Musta been one hell of a fight." Emily says.
"You have no idea." I say.
"Found one." Mal says then starts directing me.
10 minutes later we arrive and get seated.
"Alright so Mal do you want a beer or an alcoholic drink with like vodka or tequila in it?"
"Um I'll stick with beer for now."
"Okay so dark beer or light beer?"
"What's the difference."
"Well it's just how it was made...what food are you getting?"
"The chicken crisper thingy's." Mal says.
"Okay is that all that comes with it?"
"Um it says fries then one side so I was going to get the Mac and cheese."
"Okay I got you." I say as the waitress comes over to us.
"Hi my name's Lexy I'll be taking care of you today. What can I get started for you ladies?"
"I think we're ready to order." Sam says and everyone nods.
"Great. I'll start with you then." The waitress says and starts with Sam.
She then gets Lindsey and Emily's order then talks to Mal.
"And what can I get for you?"
"Um I'll have the chicken crispers with Mac and cheese and then uh Astrid what to drink again?" Mal says then the waitress looks at me.
"She'll have an Austin Beerworks Pearl Snap."
"I'll need some ID." The waitress says and Mal shows her the ID. "Great. And for you?"
"I'll take the cheese burger, cooked Medium, with fries and then Lagavulin neat. Oh and can we also get waters for everyone?" I say.
"Sure. I'll go put this order in then bring your drinks out."
"Thank you." I say then the waitress leaves.
"Whiskey Astrid?" Sam asks.
"I need it." I say.
"What'd you two fight about?" Emily asks.
"Well my contract in Germany is up and I don't know what to do."
"What are your options?" Lindsey asks as our drinks arrive.
"Play in France, Spain, or England, but I'm leaning towards retiring"
"Why? You still have at least five years left." Mal says.
"It's just not fun anymore. The past two seasons it's felt like a chore to go to training and play."
"What would you do if you retired?" Lindsey asks.
"That's the issue. I don't know whether to come back to America or stay in Germany."
"Why wouldn't you come home?" Mal says and thankfully she's more calm than Kelley.
"Sorry to interrupt, but here's your food." The waitress says and hands us the food then leaves.
"What were we talking about?"
"You coming home."
"Oh yeah. Well it's kinda difficult to uproot after living somewhere for 11 years. I mean I have a great job, friends, a house...it'll be pretty difficult to leave. There's really not that much tying me down here."
"Well just do what feels right to you Astrid." Sam says.
"Yeah, if that's retiring and living in Germany then do it." Emily says.
"Obviously we want you here in America with us, but we also want you to follow your heart." Mal says.
"I may have you girls talk to Kelley."
"I know a certain brunette who could possibly persuade you to stay." Lindsey says with a smirk.
"Tobin?" Sam asks and I nod.
"How was being a half a world away from her?" Emily asks.
"We talked on the phone everyday. We texted whenever we could and we had Skype dates every Friday and Saturday." I say.
"Aww." Mal says.
The five of us finish eating then pay and head back to the hotel. Once at the hotel we head to our rooms since a players only meeting is later tonight.
"Hey Astrid." Christen says.
"Hey."
"How was dinner?"
"Good...How is she?"
"Upset."
The fuck is she upset for?
"Oh" I say.
"Come on they pushed up the meeting." Christen says.
The two of us walk to the conference room and wait for all the players so the players only meeting can start.
Oddly Kelley is the last one in the room.
"Finally. You're back." Kelley says and sits in front of me.
"You wanna do this now?" I ask as the whole room listen's into the family fight.
"Yes because you'll run away like you always do."
"Fuck you Kelley. Don't act like some of this isn't your fault."
"None of it is."
"Kelley you were our parents favorite. You were gifted a car at 16 while I had to fucking walk everywhere. Every time you wanted to practice I had to stop whatever I was doing so little miss perfect could practice. You got everything you wanted AND then some."
"You would've gotten stuff too if you didn't run. Just because Lily..." Kelley says, but I cut her off
"Don't you ever blame this on her."
"She caused you to leave."
"YOU CAUSED ME TO LEAVE." I yell and try to calm my breathing.
"W-what?" Kelley asks.
"Kelley at Lily's funeral all of the guest said how hard this must be for YOU and YOUR family. They didn't care that I was the one who watched their girlfriend and unborn child get shot and die right in front of them. And yeah maybe the baby came into our relationship because Lily was assaulted, but that's still was my going to be my kid. You also didn't get shot and barely fucking make it so don't you ever in your life tell me this wasn't partly your fault."
"I didn't know." Kelley whispers causing me to sigh and pull her on my lap.
"I know Kelley and I'm really sorry I yelled out you. It's just...Kelley when multiple people say stuff like that at your girlfriend's funeral it's gonna fuck with your head."
"I-I-I-I-" Kelley tries to say something, but her lips starts quivering
"Hey it's alright." I say then bring her head to rest on my shoulder.
"Please don't leave." Kelley says.
"Kelloggs I don't know what I'm going to do right now."
"Just come home...Please."
"Kelley..."
"You can stay with me."
"What's going on?" Carli asks.
"My contract has finished with Wolfsburg and I have options in France, Spain, and England, but I'm leaning more towards retiring." I say.
"Okay?"
"And if I do retire then I would have to decide to either come back to America or stay in Germany. Obviously Kelley wants me to come home, but it's kinda hard for me to uproot after 11 years in Germany."
"Why would you not come back?" Alex asks.
"There's not much keeping me here. My life, my friends, and my job are in Germany."
"What would keep you in America?" Mal asks.
"What we talked about at lunch would probably keep me here."
"Think that will ever happen?" Lindsey asks.
"That's up to that person." I say then look at Kelley and whisper. "Do you wanna tell them?"
"Tell them what?" Kelley asks and I touch her left ring finger.
Kelley nods then looks at the team.
"Um I talked to Hope today and I'm finally ready to tell you girls that Hope and I are engaged."
Everyone on the team gush over the ring when Kelley take it off her necklace and puts it on her finger. The meeting kinda gets abandoned after that so I leave.
After leaving the room I head up to my room and once there I fall face first onto the mattress and stay there until the door opens.
"You okay Astrid?" Christen says, but I don't respond. "I'm getting Kelley."
Dammit.
"Hey twin" Kelley says then lays on my back.
"Fuck Kels what is Hope feeding you?" I ask.
"Well I have a healthy diet of..."
"If the end of that sentence is in anyway sexual I will tell the whole team and Hope your sexual fantasy."
"Never mind." Kelley quickly says.
"How do you know that?" Christen asks.
"Kelley is a very open and honest drunk texter and one night she just said what it was without any provocation."
"We'll talk later." Alex says and points at me.
"So what's wrong?" Kelley asks and moves off my back then we both sit up.
"I don't know."
"What's going through your head."
"A lot."
"Okay well why did you come in here and fall onto the mattress?" Christen asks.
"Just thinking about tomorrow."
"What about tomorrow? Alex asks.
"Well when me and the girls went to dinner tonight I was excited about tomorrow coming because I thought we were just friends letting off steam and having a nice meal before going to work in the morning."
"Okay?"
"But when Lindsey said we needed to head back for the meeting I got sad because I forgot I'm not going to go into work tomorrow since we have training and I'm not in Germany."
"You are going to work in the morning." Kelley says.
"Not the work I want to go to." I say.
"I'm confused." Christen says.
"Okay this is going to sound very nerdy, but I love designing planes. It's actually a really nice feeling knowing that a plane I designed got someone to their destination safely."
"Yeah it's a very you thing to do." Kelley says.
"Yeah...I don't know it just got me thinking about retiring and doing that full time."
"Oh."
"I think I'm gonna go for a walk." I say then walk out of the room.
I walk out of the hotel and go and sit on a bench. As I'm sitting there someone sits down next to me.
"Nice view."
"Tobin we are looking at a building." I say then look at her. "This view is much better"
Tobin turns to see what I'm looking at and when she realizes I'm looking at her she blushes.
"So what are you doing out here?" Tobin asks.
"Thinking."
"About?"
"Life." I say and Tobin looks me to continue. "I know I got mad at Kelley earlier for always getting everything she wants, but I want was she has."
"And that is?"
"She's about to get married. She's gonna start a family with Hope."
"Astrid can I ask you something?"
"Sure"
"Would you like to go with me to dinner tomorrow?"
"Like a date?"
"Yeah...a date."
"I'd love too."
"Sweet. I'll pick you up at 7 tomorrow night."
"Sounds good."
"Goodnight Astrid."
"Goodnight Tobin." I say then Tobin walks away.
I take a few seconds to process everything then walk back to my room and head inside.
"How was the walk?" Kelley asks.
"I have a date tomorrow." I say with a stupid grin.

Almost a Good Person
A memory, a memory of a boy who wanted more than pain, of a girl who wanted more than death, and an Isle that should not exist. The Isle of Red is a small, unassuming, quiet place. It is just large enough for a college, a small town, and maybe even a few more unusual sorts of places. Of course, the townsfolk practically know each other as family. Flush-faced regulars can be found toasting just about anything in the Briar's Brew, then, a few streets away, the same haggle of older women stationed themselves on their perch as they did every day from one of the few balconies in Central Square. They fuss away now, spouting the usual gossip as they watch us all from on high. Then there is the College here on the Isle of Red. My college. It has been often described as an unusual place by a good deal of people on the mainland. If they only would visit -why I am sure they'll soon have a change of heart, they may even come to find it a quaint sort of place, odd but in the same way a tattered old quilt can be both odd looking and warm, and especially soft. We teach mostly the same sort of disciplines here, with fantastic and absolutely normal professors.I must conclude that I am quite smitten with myself. The stage is set with a level of perfection that would have astonished me in my youth. They are coming. Derek will follow her. He knows the weight of reality too intimately, but she will be his true north if only for a short time. A beacon in the storm to show him the stunning pastels and brightness the sun may yet refract through his thinner, sharper pieces. Theoline will lead as she always has- well not always, not yet. She holds onto questions feverishly tight, that one. Lights them up inside like a new type of fuel without the slightest worry of being burned. She knows... There is but a certain few who can look at a map and find nothing where I stand but the Atlantic Ocean. And still, there is earth beneath me, a noisy pub down the road from me, and several people clucking conspiratorially on a balcony above me. She knows... that the Isle of Red doesn't belong here. Neither, technically, do I. (Hello! Chapters will be posted regularly on this website and also at Booksie: Almost a Good Person, book by KenjaminButton (booksie.com)Stay tuned for Chapter 3 to be uploaded on 5/28/2022!)
