《The Stranger on the Train》Chapter 39: New opportunities and costumes

We arrived pretty much at the same time as Lizzie and Rose. Rose seemed a bit exhausted but totally happy. Both of them had huge smiles on their faces and it melted my heart how good they get along and how happy they looked.

We got into the house and started preparing dinner while one of us was playing with Rose, switching every few minutes. Rose really enjoyed having the three of us to play with and giggled a lot. Dinner was also fun because Lizzie and Rose told us what they did on their special day. Sometimes I caught Lizzie glancing at me, which told me that Scarlett told her that I would be taking her on a date. But Lizzie seems happy for the both of us.

After dinner I said my goodbyes because I have work on Monday and have to get up early for that. Rose hugged me quite long which was probably partly because she was so tired and almost feel asleep in my arms.

Lizzie also hugged me and said we'll probably see each other in about a month, which confused me.

She noticed and looked from Scarlett to me before she explained that it's Scarlett's birthday on the 22nd of November.

Call me a bad girlfriend or anything but I didn't know that since we never talked about our birthdays.

Scarlett gave me an apologetic look, telling me later she totally forgot to tell me. But I'm happy to see Lizzie again, I liked hanging out with her.

Last but definitely not least, I said goodbye to Scarlett and since Lizzie and Rose were heading upstairs, we allowed ourselves to get lost in a longer kiss before I pulled away and smiled at her before heading home.

We still texted a little bit that night, she thanked me for the date and wished me a good week at work before wishing me a good night. I also wished her a good week and night and starred at my ceiling in contentment. Scarlett really makes me happy and sometimes I can't believe how lucky I got.

It's currently Tuesday and I'm on my way to the aquarium. The shift at the coffeeshop was good but Jesse took a day off today, so another employee took his shift. I missed Jesse and our usual talks in between customer waves.

As I get out of the subway station and walk to the aquarium, something catches my eye. There's a booth on the pier that usually isn't there.

After a short glance at the clock, I know I have a bit of time left before I need to be at the aquarium and decide to take a closer look.

I first notice the pop-up sign with a shark on it and smile to myself. The man and woman in the booth both seem to be around my age and smile kindly at me. I smile back and look at the flyers they have spread out on a table.

"Hey, can we interest you in saving the ocean?" The man asks and I look up at him. He seems to be happy that I am interested in what they're promoting.

"Yes, very much. I don't have a lot time though because I have to be at work in a few minutes." I say and for a second his face falters but the woman takes over with a smile.

"No problem, we can keep it short. We are part of an organization that works close together with scientists to save the ocean and the animals that live in it. It's not just about collecting money, it's also and maybe even more, about people understanding how important it is to take care of the ocean and it's creatures." She explains excitedly and I nod along.

"We have grown quite a lot the past three years and now have a good team of scientists and helpers and many more that want to change something. You may wonder why scientists? Well, apart from wanting to save the ocean, we also want to know more about the different species and what they need to have a good life and increase in number. Our scientists also figure out what exactly the most common problems are and how we can change that." The woman explains further and the longer I listen, the more interested I get.

"That sounds really amazing!" I say and both of them smile at my enthusiasm.

"Do you have a website or something like that, so I can read more about this program?" I ask and both of their eyes light up. The man nods eagerly and takes some of the flyers that lay on the table and hands them to me.

"Our website is linked there and there are also further information on the flyers." He explains and I take a quick look before nodding and putting them in my bag.

"I have to go now, but you two have a successful rest of the day." I say and nod goodbye before heading towards the aquarium. Both of them wave before starting to chatter about something that I can't hear anymore.

When I arrive at the aquarium, I see Mr. Jackson standing at the information counter. His back is turned to me but when I walk past him, he notices me.

"Y/n." He calls and I stop and turn around to look at him. He approaches me and gestures ahead of us, telling me to go my usual way while he accompanies me.

"I don't know if you noticed the booth on the pier..." He starts and I nod in conformation.

"The organization was founded around four years ago. The first year was mainly organizing things and the last three years they started their work. But why am I telling you this? The founders of this organization have a partnership with the aquarium. I'll spare you the details about this because it's not important right now. Today I got a call from the head of this organization and we talked about the future of it, the reason simply being why the booth is there today. They, of course, want to reach more people and grow their organization to really change something. For that they don't only need people who will donate money and maybe help with one or two projects. What they especially need, are people who know what they are doing and who have knowledge in this field."

I listen intently, not quite sure where Mr. Jackson wants to go with this. We reached the staff room and I took my work shirt with me behind a room splitter to get changed.

"Knowledge means more than having read a book or two, it means having studied it and knowing how to analyze data and how to do research." Mr. Jackson continues.

"The job also may contain the need to go for a dive to collect samples of water or to search for specific creatures to, I don't know, analyze them. Anyway, when I heard that they are currently looking for some reinforcement in this field, I thought about you." He drops the bomb and just as I step around the room splitter, my jaw falls open at his words. I'm a little too perplex to talk, which he seems to notice and continues.

"You are a great tour guide here, y/n, and I'd hate to let you go but I see potential in you, more than just showing people around and telling them about the fish we have here. When you first came here, you told me you studied marine biology and whenever I hear you talk, I can tell how much you love this topic and that you know a lot about it. I think a job in their research and scientist team would be perfect for you." He tells me and stays silent, now waiting for my answer.

I open my mouth and close it again, not sure what to say. A thousand thoughts swirl around in my head and I'm trying to process his words. This would be a hell of an opportunity for me and he is right, it sounds almost too good to be true.

"Ehm...that's a huge decision." Is the only thing I can get out right now while my thoughts are still spinning.

"I am very aware of that and you don't have to decide now. They will put an official job offer on their website in a few days, where people can apply for the job. I just wanted you to know that because I can imagine you would be great for this job." He tells me and gives me a warm smile.

I slowly nod, still trying to process. This is a lot to take in and there are a lot of things to think about. I mean, applying doesn't mean I get the job, not at all but it still feels like a huge step, also because it's kind of the job I always hoped to get one day.

"Take your time and if you want to apply, remember that I won't be mad at you for leaving." He says and pads my shoulder before giving me another smile and leaving the staff room.

I run my hands through my hair.

Holy guacamole, this is really something big.

I take a few deep breaths to calm myself down. No need to flip out right now, the first step will be applying and then I can see how it goes. And maybe I should read the details of the job because I need to know if I can still pay my rent then and if it's a full-time job and all that stuff. Maybe I should also talk to Scarlett about it, just to have another opinion on this.

I nod to myself, that's what I will do. But first, I have my shift here and people to guide around.

Rose bounces excitedly on her feet as she waits for the redlight to turn green so we can cross the street.

Since it's Saturday, it's really busy in New York and Scarlett and I both hold one of Rose's hands. We are on our way to a costume store since it's Halloween in two days and none of us has a costume yet.

When Rose asked if I would come with them to go trick or treating, I melted and agreed in an instant. Scarlett also seemed happy about my answer. Now we just need costumes.

The redlight turns green and Rose pulls us over the street and towards the store. We let her because it's obvious that she's excited and it's cute.

We enter the store and Rose's eyes grow big at all the costumes. I am also impressed by the amount they have here because I only know the store at home and they had like ten costumes maximum. This is a paradise compared to what I know. And it also seems like there is more than one level.

I look around to try and orientate myself in this huge store. Rose seems as baffled as me and Scarlett is the only one who seems to have a plan.

She leads us around the store and we pass so many costumes but they are all for adults.

We follow Scarlett to the second floor where the children's costumes are. It's full here, so we keep Rose close.

It's not needed to hold her hands anymore because we have a pretty good view over this floor and Rose also wants to look at different costumes, so we let her run around a little but keep an eye on her, slowly following her. When she finds something, she comes running to us and holds up a Frozen costume. Scarlett and I both chuckle.

"That's great, sweetheart." Scarlett encourages her and takes the costume in her hands to look at the size and the other details.

"You and y/n can go as Elsa and Olaf then." Rose thinks out loud, making me look at her in confusion. She seems to notice that and explains further.

"We go together for trick and treat, so I thought we could get a family costume." She says and plays with the zipper of her jacket. My heart fills with awe for her and I feel pure joy rising inside me.

"That is a very sweet idea, Rosie." I agree and her eyes light up at my words. We look over at Scarlett who listened in on our conversation and smiles.

"I like that idea a lot." She agrees as well and Rose cheers a little, jumping up and down.

"I'm not quite sure about the Frozen theme though." Scarlett carefully says and Rose pouts a little.

"Why not?" She asks and looks from her mother to me and back. I stay silent, letting this conversation stay between the two of them.

"Because it's gonna be a bit chillier and this costume doesn't have sleeves and I don't want you to freeze or get sick. We could put a jacket on though..." She explains before going into thought. But Rose shakes her head and takes the costume from her mom.

"No, Anna doesn't wear a jacket either, most of the time." She says with a little sigh and goes to bring the costume back. Scarlett's attention shifts to me.

"You're really okay with a family costume?" She asks softly and I smile at her wanting to make sure I'm not just saying it to make Rose happy.

"Yes, I think the idea is really adorable and I feel honored to dress up in the same theme as you two." I assure her and a smile forms on her lips before she reaches for my hand and gives it a little squeeze.

"Good."

We follow Rose further around. She takes a few costumes in her hands but doesn't seem satisfied with them and puts them back.

When we reach a certain area, I can't keep the little smirk on my face.

I glance over to Scarlett who also smirks a little as we enter the superhero area.

Rose walks straight to the Marvel section, not even looking at DC.

She seems to have one particular costume in mind and I'm not surprised when she holds up a Black Widow costume a few seconds later. The grin on her face is wide and she almost skips back to us, handing the costume to her mother. Scarlett takes a closer look.

"That's so cool, I can be just like Mommy. I will fight all the bad guys that try to steal my candy." She says excitedly and pretends to fight off someone. I laugh a little.

"Why would someone steal your candy?" I ask and Rose looks at me, her expression serious but her eyes shine with goofiness.

"Because I have the best one and because I have the best costume and get more than the other kids." She grins and I chuckle a little, ruffling her hair.

"Of course." I agree and she smiles proudly and looks to her mom. Scarlett looks at Rose apologetically.

"This isn't your size, sweetheart." She explains and Rose's expression falters.

"But...it was the only one there." She says and pouts.

"I'm sorry, honey but this doesn't fit you." Scarlett says in a soft voice and brushes over Rose's hair.

"Maybe we can find another Avengers costume that will fit you." She offers but Rose shakes her head and crosses her arms.

"No, the other's aren't as cool as you." She complains lightly and Scarlett's eyes grow a little softer but she just nods and brings the costume back while Rose looks at me.

"We will find another great costume, little dolphin." I promise. She pouts for a few more seconds before she slowly uncrosses her arms and nods.

Rose takes my hand and turns around to look for her mom. When Scarlett is with us again, we continue the search but this time Rose pulls me with her. I don't mind and when I side glance to Scarlett, I see her chuckling.

Rose looks at a few costumes but always shakes her head, mumbling to herself that this isn't the right costume. After another ten minutes, she stops and lets go of my hand to take a closer look at the costume in front of her. I smile when I see what it is.

"Would this be the right size?" She asks and holds it up for me to see. I look at it but am not sure since I don't know which size she usually wears. Scarlett comes to a halt next to me and nods.

"Yes, it is." She confirms and Rose's face lights up.

"Can we buy it then and go as 'The Incredibles' then?" She asks excited.

Scarlett and I share a quick glance before we nod and Rose cheers, happy to finally have found a costume. She takes it back into her own hands, wanting to carry it herself.

We now make our way to the adult section to find the same costumes for Scarlett and me.

They have it in our size as well and when we go to pay for them, Rose skips ahead of us, happy with the outcome.

Scarlett looks at me and then at the register, silently asking if she's allowed to pay for me. My hear fills with warmth at the fact that she respects the way I think about money and I give her a small nod, making her smile at me.

We pay and get a bag to carry all three costumes at once and while Scarlett carries the bag, Rose takes my hand again as we step out of the store.

We decide to go to a fast-food-restaurant for lunch and after Rose is done, she's off to the children's corner to play there. Scarlett and I watch her for a little while, while we finish our food.

"So, what did you want to talk about?" Scarlett asks and diverts her attention to me.

I remember that I texted her yesterday that I wanted to talk to her about something and feel my nerves rising up a little. My fingers play with the wrapping paper of our food and Scarlett carefully takes my hands in hers, allowing me to play with her fingers.

"I have the opportunity to apply for a full-time job." I start and look at her.

I'm not sure why I'm nervous to tell her but maybe it's just the nervousness in general. It's not like I don't think I could do the job because I think I can but it would be kind of a huge change. I looked the website up after my shift on Tuesday and read more about the job they have to offer. It would be a full-time job and the payment is better than my two part-time jobs together. It still feels like a big change and I'm unsure about it.

"That's great! What kind of job is it?" Scarlett asks enthusiastic. Her positive responds makes me relax a little bit and I take a breath before I continue.

"It's a research job for an organization that is relatively new. They want to protect and save the ocean and it's creatures. My position would be the scientific field, meaning that I would work with other biologists and other scientists to figure out which species are the most in danger and what the best way is to help them." I explain shortly. The explanation on the website and the one from Mr. Jackson feels too long right now. Scarlett's eyes grow in excitement.

"That would be perfect for you." She states with a smile and I nod but continue to play with her fingers.

"What's bothering you about it?" She asks softly and searches my eyes for an answer.

"I don't know, I guess it just scares me that there is a possibility that everything will change." I try to explain. "I know, it sounds dumb because when I moved here, more things changed but it just feels different now."

Scarlett nods and intertwines our fingers, stopping me from fiddling too much.

"It's not dumb, first of all. And second, I understand that. When you moved here you knew it would change and now you have settled in and found a routine and it can be scary when that is endangered to be changed. But not everything will change, Rose and I will still be there for you whenever you need us." She reassures me and I slowly nod and take another breath.

"And I doubt that you will earn less money than now, so you can very probably stay in your apartment. It will be only the job that changes and I am sure you will get used to your new job soon. I will be here to support you through it all." Her eyes lock with mine and I see nothing but softness and love in them and slowly nod.

"You are right, I can do this and I still have you and Rose. But I'm not sure about if I can stay in my apartment, it depends a little on where my workplace will be." I think out loud and Scarlett nods.

"True but we will handle that as well, one step at a time."

I smile at her in thanks, feeling my nerves settle down slowly.

"I will send an application when we are back at your house." I decide and a proud smile spreads on Scarlett's lips. She leans closer and gives me a kiss that means so much more than I can describe.

"That's my girl." She mumbles so silently that I almost don't catch it but I do and it makes the butterflies in my stomach go crazy.

We are interrupted by Rose who comes back to the table and pull away, our hands still intertwined.

"Can we go home and try on our costumes?" She asks and Scarlett and I both nod and get up.

After applying later today, the next bigger event will be Halloween and I am excited to spend it with Rose and Scarlett.

A/n: How do you think Halloween will go?
