《The Stranger on the Train》Chapter 40: Halloween

Pov y/n

Since it's Halloween today, the aquarium is closed for the afternoon and I can go to Scarlett after my morning shift at the coffeeshop.

I listened to Jesse talk and it was cute how excited he was to go to a Halloween party with his boyfriend. He wished me a great night with Scarlett and Rose before our ways split and I smiled at his nice words.

My costume is at Scarlett's, so I don't really need to bring anything with me. Well, technically I could bring some sleeping clothes but I know that Scarlett loves when I wear hers, so I don't need that either. I also have my own toothbrush there from my first unplanned stays.

I'm not sure where she stores it but whenever I sleep over there now, it's in the bathroom and it makes me smile.

The fact that it was in her ensuite the last time, showed me that she had planned that I will stay with her in her bedroom since Lizzie was in the guest bedroom and whenever I think about that, it makes me smirk a little bit.

Even though I don't really need anything from my apartment, I still go back there after work because I wanted to shower before going to Scarlett.

I catch myself smiling like an idiot at the fact that I'm gonna spend Halloween with Scarlett and Rose.

It may sound cheesy but it's the perfect way to spend Halloween in my opinion.

I could have gone to a party, sure but what would I wanted there?

What could be better than to spend it with the woman I love and her daughter that I adore?

My phone pulls me out of my thoughts and I smile when I see that it's my sister Marla calling.

It's a facetime call, so I expect them to pull some kind of prank.

I answer it and a face with a monster mask pops up. Since I prepared myself for that, I don't jump or have any other kind of reaction to the disappointment of my sister. She pulls of the mask and sulks a little.

"Why aren't you scared?" She asks almost accusingly and I laugh.

"Because you're relatable Marla. Besides, shouldn't I be more scared of your actual face?" I tease and she pretends to be annoyed by my answer but grins a little.

"Good one!" Bennett cheers from the background and I can see a pillow flying towards him. He dodges it with a grin and steps closer.

"I told you, you couldn't scare her." He tells his sister and waves at me. I wave back while Marla rolls her eyes at him.

"It was worth a try." She says before looking back at me.

"How are you spending Halloween?" She asks and swats Bennett's hand away that makes some gestures around her head, that I think are supposed to be scary.

I chuckle a little and think about my answer. I haven't exactly told them that I have a girlfriend, nor that I have been dating her before. But I guess they'll find out anyway at some point.

"I'm spending it with my girlfriend and her daughter." I answer and bite my lip, nervous about their reaction.

My sister's mouth falls open in surprise and Bennett stares at the phone for a few seconds before he catches himself and smiles.

"Good for you, y/n." He says and I feel my heart get lighter.

"Thank you, Benny." I say and he rolls his eyes at the name but the smile stays on his lips. I'm the only one who is allowed to call him that and maybe Mom but no one else.

"That's amazing. Who is she?" Marla asks, having caught herself now as well. I guess lying about it doesn't make any sense because sooner or later they'll figure out anyway that it's Scarlett Johansson.

"Her name is Scarlett." I answer and both twins nod, waiting for me to go on.

"She's 32 and has a six-year-old daughter." I continue further and I can tell that they both try not to look too surprised by that. I give them a few seconds to process and this time Marla is the first one to speak.

"Hair and eye color?" She asks and I am glad they didn't comment on the age gap or Rose.

"She's blonde and has green eyes. The most beautiful green eyes on this planet." I add and smile when I think about them. Marla and Bennett both giggle a little.

"She got you good as it seems." Bennett states and I feel my cheeks heating up a little bit. Maybe she does.

We talk a little further about Halloween and they tell me that they are on a party later tonight but Mom told them to be home at 12 am, which they aren't happy about.

I ask them to be careful before we say our goodbyes and I get ready to go to Scarlett's.

On the way there I can't help but smile, talking to my siblings made me really happy and I realize that I kinda miss them.

I get a message from my Mom and shake my head with a chuckle, of course those two couldn't keep it to them that I am in a relationship.

I promise Mom to call her when I have time, so we can talk about these 'exciting news'.

On the subway are a few dressed up people and it's really entertaining to watch as a person in quite a big apple costume tries to squeeze through the doors of the subway.

A few stops later I get out and walk to Scarlett's house. I smile at the Halloween decorations that I helped to put up on Saturday, they look really great.

There's a sign at the frontside of the gate and I see that Rose drew the pumpkins around the letter that Scarlett wrote: "We are out ourselves tonight, so no one's home."

The sign is quite cute and it makes me even more excited to go trick or treating with them. It's been a while since I've done it. The last time could lay around ten years back.

After that I've always met up with friends to have a sleepover or go to parties when we were older.

I ring the doorbell and am buzzed in a few moments later. Before I can even reach the front door, Rose bolts out of it and jumps into my arms. I catch her and almost stumble a little back at the sudden impact.

"Hey, little dolphin." I greet her and hug her back while walking up the few steps to the entrance.

"Rose, I told you to please not run outside on your socks." I hear Scarlett call from somewhere in the living room or kitchen. She seems to know her daughter very well.

"Sorry, Mommy." Rose answers before looking at me with a grin.

"It's Halloween!" She exclaims and bounces a little in my arms.

I chuckle and set her down to get out of my shoes. She waits for me and now bobs up and down on her feed.

There is a pumpkin drawn on her one cheek and she wears a long sleeve with a witch on a broom.

Her hair is tied up into two ponytails, exactly like the witch on her shirt. She looks adorable and I smile softly at her.

As soon as I'm out of my shoes, she takes my hand and pulls me towards the kitchen. Now I can see Scarlett, whisking something in a bowl and I can also smell cupcakes that are probably still in the oven.

Scarlett smiles at me brightly while Rose leads me to the barstools and we sit down opposite of Scarlett.

"Mommy and I are making Halloween-carrot-cupcakes and even though there are carrots in it, it still tastes amazing." Rose tells me what's going on and I place a hand on the back of her stool to ensure she won't fall off since she is still a little bouncy. Scarlett shoots me a thankful smile that I easily return.

"That sounds exciting." I say and Rose nods.

"I helped to mix the batter but Mommy said I wasn't allowed to rasp the carrots because it's too dangerous. But I helped her make the frosting." Rose continues to tell me and I look at her and listen to her talking with a smile.

"And you abandoned me because the doorbell rang." Scarlett pretends to sigh and shakes her head, making Rose giggle.

"I had to let y/n in." She explains and looks to me. Scarlett grins a little before putting the bowl down and sliding it over to us with a little tube of food coloring, of course it's orange.

"You can decide, how much color we put in there." Rose tells me generously and I ruffle her hair a little in thanks.

Since I don't really know how much coloring goes in this, I drop a few drops in there before mixing it. It turns into a light orange and I add more coloring until it's a nice shade.

Rose looks into the bowl as well and seems satisfied with my work.

Before I can slide the bowl back to Scarlett, Rose dips her finger into it and tastes the cream. She has a mischievous smirk on her face and I look at her with big eyes.

"Did you just steal frosting?" I ask in a playfully low voice and Rose nods, licking her finger clean with a smirk.

I shake my head and reach out my hand to tickle her, slowly so she has time to escape. She slides of the chair, which I help her a little with, and bolts away into the living room. I get off my chair as well and chase after her.

We run a few rounds around the couch until I catch her. Rose squeaks and giggles when I pull her onto the couch with me and dig my fingers into her sides, tickling her.

She squirms and squeals while trying to wiggle out of my grip but she can't escape. Her adorable giggles fill the room and when she begs me to stop between giggles, I let go of her and watch her, from the running around and tickling, reddened cheeks.

Her eyes sparkle with joy and before I know it, she throws herself into my arms in an attempt to throw me over. I let myself fall onto my back since we're still on the couch. Rose now sits on my stomach with a happy grin.

"I won." She tells me with a smirk but I shake my head and raise my hands. Rose's eyes grow big and she scrambles to get off me and runs into the kitchen to hide behind Scarlett who watched us with amusement.

"Fine, let's say it's a tie." I offer and Rose takes my hand and we shake on it.

The cupcakes are ready a few minutes later and we let them cool off before putting the frosting on them.

We taste them and Rose swarms about how they are so great but don't taste like carrot at all.

Scarlett and I chuckle at her amazement and eat our cupcakes. We put the rest of them in the fridge for tomorrow and I take Rose with me upstairs to clean her face off the frosting mainly around her mouth.

While she sits on the counter and I clean her face, she tells me about how her teacher drew the pumpkin on her face today and how every kid in her class got to chose a small item.

She giggles when she tells me that one kid asked for a horn on their forehead and pretend to be a unicorn for the rest of the day.

I laugh with her and bop her nose when her face is all clean. I also removed the pumpkin because when we get into our costumes, we'll also wear eye masks and the makeup would just be smudged by it.

My attention snaps to the door where Scarlett leans against the doorframe with a happy smile while watching us. Rose notices her mom too and asks about the costumes. Scarlett tells her they are ready and are on the beds.

So, I lift Rose off the counter and off she runs to put on her costume. Scarlett smiles at me and I approach her, wrapping my arms around her waist.

"I didn't get the chance to properly greet you." She whispers and kisses me softly. The kiss tastes like cupcakes and makes me smile. I return the kiss just as soft and see Scarlett's eyes lighting up when I pull away and tug some hair behind her ears.

"How about you get that cute butt of yours into the costume while I help Rose?" She offers and kisses my cheek before letting go of me.

"You think my butt is cute?" I ask back with a smirk and earn a playful eyeroll from her.

"I would rather describe it as well formed, attractive, hot..." I list of cheekily and Scarlett just laughs a little and shakes her head.

"I won't argue about that." She answers with a wink before nodding towards her bedroom door, telling me that my costume is in there.

I enter her bedroom and find our costumes laying on the bed. After closing the door, I get out of my clothes and put on my costume.

I step in front of a mirror and adjust it a little until I'm happy and open the door again and step out onto the hallway.

Scarlett leaves Rose's room at the same time and when she sees me, she stops in her tracks and her eyes scan my body. They linger on certain places longer and she bites her lip before looking into my eyes.

Since I know Rose is very close by, I resist the urge to say something and just smirk.

A second later Rose comes out of her room and jumps excitedly when she sees me.

"You look great, sweetie!" I compliment her and her eyes start to sparkle.

Scarlett and I switch positions and she closes the door behind her to get dressed. Rose spins around in her costume to show me everything and I watch her and tell her it looks amazing. The excitement in her face is adorable and she starts talking about the movies and which character she wants to be or better, whose powers she would like to have.

To keep it short: all of them.

Her gushing about these movies makes my heart fill with love for her and I almost miss how the bedroom door opens and Scarlett steps outside.

I gulp and now totally understand why she was staring at me. The costume is kinda tight and looks incredible on her and it takes a lot of willpower to not drool at her sight. She smirks knowingly and comes to us.

"Alright, now that we're all dressed up, I think we only need the bucket and then we're good to go." She says and Rose cheers before walking down the stairs.

It's obvious that she wants to run but she remembers the rules and walks them down. We follow her and see her grab the pumpkin bucket from the living room before coming back into the hallway to put on her shoes.

Scarlett and I also put on our shoes and Scarlett grabs the keys.

"Does anyone need to go to the toilet before we head out?" She asks and looks from Rose to me.

We both shake our heads and I give Scar the same look and she shakes her head as well.

Rose is the first one out of the door, what a wonder, and we follow her.

We walk a down a few streets until the houses don't look so closed off and we meet other children and their parents. Rose looks at us before running to the first house.

It's almost hard to keep up with her because all the excitement makes her quick.

An older lady opens the door and looks from Rose to us before smiling and telling Rose how great she looks.

Rose beams up at the lady and thanks her for the candy she gets.

When the door is closed, Rose turns around and proudly shows us a chocolate bar. It's adorable how happy she is and we go back to the street.

It's slowly getting darker as we pass more houses and walk up to the doors. Rose motivated exclaims "trick or treat" at every house and beams at the people who give her candy.

Her bucket fills good but she doesn't seem tired at all.

We meet some of her friends and when they go to the doors, Scarlett and I stay on the street with the other parents and watch them.

It reminds me of my childhood and all the Halloweens I spent at home and with my family. A warm feeling spreads inside my chest and I can't help it but to smile while watching Rose enjoy the evening.

Scarlett and I stroll behind the group of children while holding hands and listening to the other parents talk. The atmosphere is great and I admire the carved pumpkins on almost every house.

There is a short moment where I'm worried, the mood might turn around, when Rose eyes another girl wearing a Black Widow costume but when a friend of hers points something out, Rose is distracted again.

We continue to go trick or treating until we were at every house on this and another street and it's getting quite dark and late. Rose says goodbye to her friends and comes back to Scarlett and I. For a while she skips ahead of us, rambling about tonight and the costumes she saw and the candy she got.

She proudly tells us how one house gave out big bars of chocolate and another gummy bears and how she got one little bag more than the others.

All the people seemed to know who she was and it was just great.

Scarlett and I listen with smiles on our faces and watch Rose.

Slowly but surely it's obvious that the energy becomes less and less, even though she had a few sweets during the trick or treating.

Rose hands Scarlett her bucket with the explanation that it's too heavy to carry anymore. Scarlett chuckles a little and takes it. Rose settles in between Scarlett and I and takes both our hands. For a few minutes we walk in silence and Rose's steps get slower.

"Can you carry me, Mama?" She asks and we look down at her.

My heart almost soars out of my chest when I see that she's looking at me.

"Of course, sweetie." I answer and pick her up.

Her arms wrap around my neck and her legs around my waist. I hold her up underneath her bum and she leans her head onto my shoulder.

I can feel Scarlett's eyes on me and look over to her, to see her smile the widest I have ever seen. I'm pretty sure I have a similar expression on my face.

We continue our way back to the house in silence, not wanting to disturb the calm moment.

The way isn't too long anymore, which I'm kinda glad about because I'm also a bit exhausted from trick or treating and carrying Rose adds to that feeling. Not that I'm complaining, I would carry her for as long as she wants.

Eventually we reach the house and Scarlett opens it. I get out of my shoes but keep Rose on my arms this time and Scarlett gets the shoes off of Rose. I carry her upstairs and into the bathroom so we can get her ready for bed quickly.

It seems a little like Rose dozed off on my shoulder for a little while because she has this sleep-look in her eyes that you have shortly after you wake up.

I help her brush her teeth, meaning I'm doing it for her, before carrying her into her bedroom, where Scarlett waits with Rose's pajamas. She changes Rose quickly while I am turned around, wanting to give them some privacy. When I hear the bedsheets move, I turn around and see Scarlett tugging Rose in. I crouch down next to her and smile at the tired Rose. Scarlett kisses her forehead.

"Good night, my sweetheart." She says and Rose smiles a little.

"Good night, Mommy." Rose replies and Scarlett makes room for me to say good night. I lean closer and kiss Rose's forehead as well.

"Good night, little dolphin." I whisper and also get a tired smile.

"Good night, Mama." Rose mumbles before her eyes fall close.

My heartbeat quickens again at her words and pure joy fills my body. Scarlett and I silently leave the girl's room and pull the door almost closed before heading downstairs and sitting down on the sofa.

We both stay silent for a few moments and a wide smile tugs on my lips. Scarlett catches it and angles her body directly towards me.

"Did you hear it too?" I ask unnecessarily. Scarlett returns my smile and nods.

"I think I never got so excited over a simple word." I share and grin.

"I think we both know it was more than just a simple word." Scarlett says and I nod in agreement.

It wasn't just a word, it was Rose telling us she sees me as her mother. Just thinking about it makes my heart almost soar.

"She really loves you." Scarlett says with a soft smile and I nod.

"And I really love that little sunshine as well." I share and even though it seemed impossible, Scarlett's smile grows.

"I think it's best if we see how this continues and if she calls you that on a regular basis or not. If she wants to talk about it, I think we're both here for her but I wouldn't force it." Scarlett thinks out loud and I agree with her, that's the best way we can handle this.
