It's a Saturday and I'm helping mum at the cafe. As I wipe and clear tables after the lunch rush I can't stop myself from daydreaming about the last couple of weeks with Skylar.

Things have stepped up a notch since that awkward first date thingy, whatever it was. But now we are kind of dating.

We haven't really discussed it but we have been spending a lot of time together doing 'couple' things, including making out.

We had a couple more uncomfortable make out sessions before I got the courage to tell him he was being a bit too rough. He apologised and things have significantly improved.

He's even become more daring with his hands, last time touching me...

I'm suddenly snapped back to the present by a tap on my shoulder. I turn to see Hunter standing there.

"Um, hey how are you?" He asks me.

"Oh hi, yeah I'm good thanks"

I feel my cheeks go red from Hunter interrupting my thoughts about Skylar, my slightly skanky thoughts!

His hands are in his pockets and he's swaying back and forth on his feet obviously trying to act casual.

"That's good, Lexi tells me you started dating Skylar Tate."

Wow ok, he's getting straight to it then.

"Yeah, we've become close over the last few weeks."

"I'm only saying this because despite everything that's going on at the moment I still care about you very much, but please be careful. I've heard unpleasant things about him and he's friends with some really dodgy people."

My fists are clenched at my sides and a scowl spreads across my face. How dear he come in here and start talking about Skylar like that. He doesn't know him like I do.

"So is that why you're here, to try and warn me away from him?"

"What! No, I came to get some lunch and when I saw you....I...I just don't want you to get hurt, Maddie."

"Bit late for that don't ya think!"

His eyes drop to the ground and he looks uncomfortable. Good! He should be after everything he's put me through.

"Why don't you run along back to your girlfriend."

I'm being petty but I don't really care right now.

"Um..we...ah....actually aren't together anymore," he's still looking at the ground as he tells me this latest revelation. My mouth drops open.

"Wait...what....when?"

"The same day you came to the house to take Lexi surfing. I was in a bad mood after our 'talk' that afternoon and she called me out, told me she'd had enough." He looks up at me looking sad.

"I told her about our kiss right after it happened, she accepted my apology but I guess eventually we both came to realise, my feelings have changed."

Wait! What is he talking about?

Then right at the very moment, he starts to open his mouth again Lexi comes bursting through the front door.

"Maddie!" She runs up and gives me one of her famous hugs.

"Hey I was thinking, tomorrow instead of going surfing, can we go ten pin bowling? You could even bring your new boyfriend," she says to me with a big smile.

"Uhh" I look at Hunter who is back to staring at the floor.

"Yeah we could do that, I'm sure Skylar would love to come."

Lexi starts jumping up and down with excitement.

"Lexi I'm just going to get our lunch k. Maddie, say hi to your mum for me...I guess I'll see you round."

And with that, he walks over to the food cabinets.

Lexi is still jumping up and down totally oblivious to her brother looking like someone just ran over his dog, not that he has one, but if he did that's what he'd look like if someone ran it over.

I shake my head, my brain is obviously turning to mush after Hunter telling me about Emily. I can't believe she broke up with him.

"Earth to Maddie."

I look down at Lexi waving her hand in my face.

"Sorry, what were you saying?"

"Do you want to pick me up or should I walk to your place?"

"Oh, do you want to come to me and I'll get Skylar to pick us up. I'm sure mum would love to see you too."

Mum always loves catching up with Hunter's sisters, but this time I kind of have an ulterior motive, I don't want to run into Hunter. I like Skylar and I think seeing Hunter too much knowing he's now single is just going to mess with my head. So I'm going to do what I do best and completely avoid the situation.

"Lexi, I'm finished," Hunter calls from across the cafe.

"Ok, coming. See you tomorrow Maddie." She gives me another big hug and runs towards her brother. I wave at them as they head out the door and both wave back. Hunter avoids eye contact with me until he gets to the door, he throws one glance back my way before he's gone.

I grab the tray of dirty dishes and tell Carol I'm going to take my break. I dump the dishes in the kitchen and immediately grab my phone to ring Sienna.

"Hey, Maddie, what's up?"

"Did you know Hunter and Emily broke up!?"

I'm met with silence.

"I'll take that as a yes! How come you didn't tell me?" I'm not mad at her, but I can't believe no one said anything.

"Well besides the fact that it's not really my place to say anything, I've hardly seen you lately. You've been hanging out with Skylar so much, plus you seem really happy with him. I figured finding out Hunter is single again would be in no way helpful."

"Is that right oh wise one." I roll my eyes even though she can't see.

"Ok! so tell me then, now that you know, how do you feel about it? I'm guessing you only just found out and called me straight away."

"Maybe." she knows me too well.

"You didn't answer my question?"

"He just told me, he was here at the cafe."

"And?"

"And I don't know! My plan is to stay in complete denial."

"Well that sounds helpful!" Sarcasm dripping from her voice.

"You're right, I'm happy with Skylar and it was her that dumped him, he's probably still pinning after her. So I'm just going to keep doing what I'm doing and maybe sometime soon Hunter and I can start to become friends again."

"Good! I'm happy that you're moving on. You deserve a nice guy that doesn't muck you around."

"Thanks, Sienna, I really couldn't ask for a better friend and sorry I haven't been around much, wanna hang out after school on Monday?"

"Sounds good, I'm dying to hear how things are going with Skylar."

"Great, see you at school. Oh and Sienna."

"Yeah?"

"Thanks for not telling me about Hunter."

"No problem."

I hang up and text Skylar about going bowling tomorrow with Lexi.

This may have been what I was waiting for for months, but I'm in a good place right now and I'm glad Hunter doesn't hold that same power over me anymore, I think. Maybe we are finally starting to get somewhere. Somewhere close to being back to normal again.
