"So, this is the girl you were talking about," Coco said, glancing toward Louis who was standing next to her. "Does she know?"
Crimson eyes were focused on the female revenant who was sitting on the couch in front of the jukebox. Louis heard Coco's question and shook his head with a sorrowful frown. "No."
"But your memory of her is intact. Do you plan on telling her the truth?"
"Even if I did, I doubt she would believe me. Forcing my memory upon her won't help. Most revenants are unaware of their lost memories."
"But not all," Coco stated. "Who knows. Maybe you could trigger her memory and help her remember. That photo you have might work."
"Maybe, but I refuse to show it to her. If she learns about her missing memory, her reaction may be to search for them out in the Gaol."
"And we wouldn't want her to carelessly wander around the Gaol and wind up getting herself killed once and for all," the blonde added, now seeing the reason behind Louis' secrecy. "I'll keep my mouth shut, then."
"Thanks, Coco," Louis replies.
"Just make sure to keep an eye on her while you're searching the Gaol for blood beads. But I doubt you'll let anything happen to her seeing how much you stare at her already," the woman laughed. "Just try not to creep her out too much with all the staring."
Louis didn't realize how much he'd been staring at (Y/n) until Coco pointed it out. "Sorry." He looks away from his childhood friend. "It's been so long since I've seen her. Seeing her now... I can tell how long it has been."

"It's a miracle you were able to find her at all," the woman commented before shoving him in (Y/n)'s direction. "Now stop talking to me and spend some time with her. And remember, cut down on the staring. You'll creep her out."
Doing as Coco commanded, Louis sauntered over to (Y/n) and sat beside her. He leant forward, staring at the coffee table with lit candles scattered across the surface. "So..." Louis tried to think of a good conversation starter and decided to ask a question. "How long have you been on your own in the Gaol?"
"A few months," she answered. "I only awoke as a revenant four months ago. When I did, I was all alone inside an abandoned medical facility that was partially collapsed. I did come across a friendly revenant who explained my situation and gave me a month-supply of blood beads. Ever since, I've avoided contact with other revenants. But, of course, I've had plenty of run-ins with the Lost."
Louis continued his interrogation. "When I found you, you were bleeding from your side and barely conscious. What happened?"
"Well..." (Y/n) tapped her fingers together as she stared down at her hands that laid in her lap. "I was hoping to find an inkling as to who I was before becoming a revenant. The man who helped me after I woke up asked me about my memory. He also told me I might not even be aware of my missing memories, but I feel like a piece of me is missing. He said it's possible that I'm one of very few revenants who are aware of their missing memories. So, I set out to search for them, and the only place I can do so is the Gaol."

The one thing Louis feared had already come true. He knew the dangers of traveling the Gaol of Mist all too well and the fate myriads of revenants had faced due to deciding to explore on their lonesome in a desperate attempt to find blood beads or out of pure curiosity. The Lost filled the streets and buildings, making every inch of the Gaol perilous regardless if someone was traveling alone or with companions. Now knowing the truth, Louis knew he couldn't allow (Y/n) to search for her memories and risk losing her forever. "It's too dangerous to be alone out in the Gaol. If the Lost were to attack and destroy your heart, you wouldn't be able to regenerate and your body would turn to ash."
"I know," (Y/n) replied. "But without my memories, I feel...lost. I'm not sure how to describe it, but I feel like I'm forgetting someone important. When I try to remember who they are, I can't even visualize a face or even think of their voice. There's nothing, but I hope the person I've forgotten is safe. Once I find out who they are, I want to look for them."
Louis continued to stare at the burning candles, gripping his hands together tightly. The gloves creaked under his harsh grip. He was facing emotional turmoil and couldn't even explain why. Making a decision, he stood from the couch and peered down at the (h/c)-haired girl. He would show her the picture. "I know something that might help jog your memory."
(Y/n)'s eyes glistened with hope. "Really?"
Louis nodded and searched his pocket for the picture he took with him wherever he went. It never left his pocket until he felt the urge to view it. He found the photo and handed it to (Y/n). "I'm not sure how much help this picture will be, but I hope it'll be a start."
The (e/c)-eyed girl accepted the photo and examined it. Her eyes widened in pure shock when she saw who was in the photo. "This is..." It was an image of her and Louis during their first day at the university. They were standing at the entrance, unable to hide their excitement as they smiled from ear-to-ear. (Y/n) tore her eyes from the photo and looked up at Louis. "Are... Are you the person I keep trying to remember?"
"I'm not sure," Louis sighed dejectedly. "Once we began studying at the university, our time together dwindled. Eventually, we never saw each other because of how busy we were. I'm sure you met plenty of people before the Great Collapse. It's possible you're trying to remember someone who isn't me." Admitting it out loud left a sour taste in Louis' mouth. He wanted to believe (Y/n) was trying to remember him and not someone else. It was a terrible belief, but he wanted to be the one that filled her memories.
"Thank you, Louis," (Y/n) spoke up after a prolonged silence. She held the photo gently, admiring it one last time before handing it back to him. "I think this does help me. I'm afraid my mind is still foggy, but I've no doubt that you and I knew each other when we were human. This photo is proof enough. Will you...help me remember?"
Louis nodded, smiling gently. "Of course, I'll help."

For the Hoard
Ergo the dragon is enjoying his seasonal hibernation when human explorers from another world invade his lair. Sucked into an unknown land, and reduced to a fledgling dragon by the loss of his hoard; Ergo must struggle to survive in a world that has been utterly subjugated by humanity. More importantly, will he ever get to finish his hibernation!? note: while I ticked the boxes for sexual/traumatizing content, I mostly did that to keep my options open. I don't currently have any planned, nor do I expect it to be a significant part of the story. After all, the main character is literally a dragon.
