《Tracks》Chapter 3- Art

"Seven billion people experienced today in a different way"

Song- Can I call you tonight; Dayglow

"Camybear!" A annoying shrill voice I hoped to never hear again rings through my ears. A blur of brown hair rushes past us and jumps into Cams arms basically attacking him.

Their lips connects and I'm mildly disgusted.

Okay, very disgusted.

They look like 2 sloths during mating season. Gross.

"Wouldn't this be considered cannibalism, since they're eating each other's faces off" I grimace turning to my friends who watch with the same amount of disgust.

"Okay, stop it. I don't want to be an uncle just yet" Theo taps on Cams shoulder. They pull apart and Serena gives my brother a dirty look. Bri and Miles grab my arm stopping me from lunging at her.

Serena's eyes scan over the group landing on me. Her thin lips curl up into a snarl. "Oh you still go here? I'm surprised your mom hasn't sent you away yet"

"And I'm surprised your 20 dollar face lift hasn't fallen yet" I retort. She gasps looking to Cameron for support but he just looks away. Asher, Theo and Addie all laugh outloud. Miles snorts quietly and Bri bites her lip to hide her smile.

"Babe! Are you going to let this bitch say that about me" She whines in a high pitched voice.

"What did you say?!" Addie takes a step forward ready to punch her at any moment.

Addie is the type to never back down from a fight. She never lets anyone insult her friends without leaving with a black eye. I grab her wrist to hold her back subtly.

"I saw what someone wrote on your locker, so sweet of them to put your name on it so it's easier to find" she smirks evilly. I see Cams jaw clench as he glances at his girlfriend.

"Oh you little-" Addie starts to go towards her but Bri and I hold her back.

"It's fine Addie, I wouldn't want you to waste your energy on her" I say starting to walk away. Everyone follows me. Serena grabs Cams hand.

"Where are you going?" She asks looking angry.

"Um class" He says blatantly giving her a goodbye kiss and walking away. I glance back and see her watching in shock as a few of her friends come up behind her.

He meets up with the rest of my group giving me a smile but I ignore him stubbornly marching into the class. When him and Serena first started dating I ignored him for two weeks and only talked to him again because he stole Charlie from me and wouldn't give him back.

I spot Sara sitting behind her desk typing on the computer. She looks up at us and smiles, standing up and walking around to give all of us a hug.

First Asher, then Addie, after that she kissed Miles cheek and hugs Bri. She looks at Cam, Theo and I and says "you're late"

"Someone wrote on Mars l-" I quickly cover up Theo and Cams mouth so they don't rat me out.

If they told Sara she would tell mom and mom would March up here and punch a kid. Sara studies us with her eyes while Theo licks my hand. I remove it hitting him we Cam forcibly takes my hand off.

"What was that?" Sara questions reading our lie. We have never been able to pull one over on her. Dave and mom would always believe our lies when we were younger but she could see through it.

"Oh I just forgot my.... shoes! Yeah I forgot my shoes in front of the school so I had to go back and get them" I lie glaring at the boys to get my message through. Everyone else takes their seats leaving just us three.

"Yeah, you know Mar. Always forgetting things" Cam chuckles awkwardly wrapping an arm around Theo and my neck.

"Why would you take your shoes off outside the school?" Her brows crease in a way we knew we were about to be busted.

Just like in 8th grade when we all snuck out for the first time to go to a party that we never actually made it too. We couldn't drive so we planned on walking but walking 7 miles with no shoes at 12 o'clock at night isn't a good idea.

We ended up stopping at the 24 hour diner and grabbing food there. Carol, the diner owner and my moms boss spotted us and called my mom, feeding us milkshakes and fries while we waited.

"I needed to air my girls out" I wave around my feet putting on my most convincing smile.

"You know what? I'll figure out what you guys are hiding later. I have a class full of students now get in your seats!" She waves us off and I peer around the class who was all doing their own things.

She turns around and starts writing on the board while the three of us head to our seats. I shove Cams arm off of me and storm away from him sitting in between Bri and Addie.

Sara's class is set up with multiple round tables that have 7 seats each. A large whiteboard in the front and Sara's desk in the corner.

Behind her desk on the wall has a family picture off all of them along with a picture of all of us from last year and a few other pictures of Theo, Cam and I over the years.

"Come on Mar, are you really going to ignore me?!" Cam huffs sitting across the table from me next to Miles and Asher. I don't respond opening my backpack and pulling out my notebook for this class along with my laptop.

"I think she is!" Theo whispers loudly to Cam. Everyone starts to pull out their materials for the class.

"You think?" Asher retorts leaning back in his chair not getting any stuff out.

"Yeah, I do" Theo nods not noticing the sarcasm in his voice. Cam curses shuffling through his bags.

"I forgot a pencil" he groans throwing his bag down.

"On the first day, dumbass" Addie snorts popping a piece of gum.

"Moms going to kill me" He complains looking to Miles who raises his hands in defense.

"I don't have an extra one" he tells him opening his laptop.

"Theo? Come on please?" Cam begs my brother who quirks a brow.

"What would I get in return?" Theo asks interlocking his fingers and resting his hands on them extremely interested.

"For a pencil?" Cam questions slowly looking at his best friend seemingly questioning why they are best friends.

"Yeah, I'm a business man" Theo replies nodding his head.

"Selling alcohol to kids for 10 dollars more than you buy it for is a business now?" I say earning a glare and a shove from Theo.

"I don't see you making a money" Theo argues turning from Cam to me.

"I'll just sell you on the black market. Boom! 20 bucks right there!" I smirk bringing one of my knees to my chest.

"20 dollars?"

"Okay, maybe that's a stretch. 15 if you're hair looks good"

"Back to me" Cam snaps between our conversation getting our attention back to him. "What do you want for it"

"Your truck for 2 hours , I have a date on Friday"

"You want my truck for 2 hours just so I can use a pencil?"

"Yeah"

"Fine" Cam huffs. Theo's smile widens when he turns to me.

"Marlee I need to borrow a pencil"

"You don't have a pencil?" Asher rolls his eyes leaning so far back in his chair he almost fell.

"No but I need his truck" he turns back to me with pleading eyes. "Please Mar, I'll owe you big time"

"It's just a pencil" Miles reminds us. I reach down grabbing my bag and handing it to my brother. He turns and gives it to Cam who flicks Theo's head and turns to me.

"Thanks Mar" He gives me a charming smile he's been doing since he was three. The only good thing is that I've been used to it since I was 3 and the effects no longer work on me.

"So what's the plan for after school?" I ask anyone but him. Addie perks up with a grin.

"Let's go to the spot, I haven't been since we got back from vacation" she explains looking to all of us.

"I'm in" Bri comments.

"Me too" Miles agrees.

"As long as we stop and get tea first, I'm going through withdrawals" I complain. Addie and Brianna rub my back while I bang my head onto the table.

"It has been less that 12 hours" Theo tells me and I look at him with a dumb expression.

"Yeah way too long"

Jeez, none of these people understand me and my love for sweet tea.

"Okay, deal" Miles huffs ruffling my hair just as Sara starts class.

After first period let's out I leave ignoring Cams calls after me. It may seem immature for being upset at him for what his girlfriend did but I don't care.

He knew how much she got to me when he started dating her but he dated her anyway. I promised him I would be nice to her if she was nice to me...

That didn't happen. Oops.

My second period is algebra two -or as I like to call it- the class that makes me want to go into a diabetic coma. Brianna and Addie walk beside me, all of us chatting as we reach our class.

"So how long are you going to stay mad at Cam this time?" Bri questions used to the constant fights between us.

"Why don't you punch him, that's what I do to Asher when he gets on my nerves" Addie suggests taking a seat in one of the rows. I sit beside her and Brianna sits behind us.

"Or I could just punch Asher, that's always an option" I shrug taking out my phone and checking my messages.

I have a message from mom in our family group chat saying she's working overtime along with Theo complaining about how he wants to drop out and Grayson talking about how much he loves high school.

I have over 30 messages from our friend group chat with all of us in it. Mostly Theo, Cam and Asher debating where we should get dinner tonight while Miles gets mad at them for texting in class.

The bells rings so I quickly pocket my phone and turn to the front ready for a long class period.

I hate algebra. Math is supposed to be numbers, why do they have to be complicated and add letters. Addie and Bri have a separate class than mean meaning I have to walk alone to my next class.

I ignore the whispers and laughs, the odd student yelling a mean name at me or someone "accidentally" shoving into me. I hold my head high glaring at anyone who try's to say something to me.

Before last year I was considered "popular". I mostly stuck with the group but everyone seemed to like me. That was until something happened.

The entire school besides my friends and the baseball team (seeing as all the boys are on the team) decided I was a disgrace. It doesn't bother me too much, I have my friends and that's all that matters but it does get annoying.

I walk into my favorite class and a smile immediately forms on my face. I spot Mrs.Bennet the art teacher I've had since freshman year. She was the one who always encouraged me to do something more with my art.

I never did and she was okay with that, still praising all the work I did(even my bad pieces). I smile at her before taking a seat at one of the 2 person tables with no one else at.

I glance around the room to see students filing in. The walls a decorated in numerous different art works from students(60% mine).

Most of the kids in this school or even adults in this town don't appreciate the arts. It's all about football and Baseball. Well any sports.

Unluckily for me I wasn't blessed with the athletic gene in my family. All of my friends have something. Cam, Theo, Miles and Asher all are wonderful baseball players.

They already have scouts coming for them even though we're just juniors. Addie is the fasted track runner in our state. Bri is for one a genius and two an angelic singer.

They're all going to get scholarships and go off to college while I'll be stuck here working a minimum wage job to try and save up for college.

Mom tries to be hopeful but I've heard conversations with Sara and Dave about how she doesn't think she'll be able to afford it. I don't want her to pay anyways.

Sure I have my art but it's not that special. Even if I could manage to get a scholarship it wouldn't be enough. I haven't told Theo or Cameron about it yet.

Knowing them they would stuff me in their suitcase and drag me with them. I don't want to worry them, I'll figure it out myself. Besides I still have a year before I'm a senior, I have time.

Or at least that's what I keep telling myself.

I pull out my art supplies and lay them on the table in front of me. I hear someone sit in the chair next to me and spot Cam.

Great.

How am I supposed to ignore him when he's right next to me.

I don't know how long I plan on being mad at him, maybe a couple days, or until he buys me food. Either way works.

"Hey" he says sitting down and pulling a piece of my hair. "You're still mad?" He groans poking my cheek. "Look I'm sorry please talk to me"

Not looking at him I open up my sketch book to a blank page. I set up my pencils next to it and set my backpack on the floor leaning against the desk. Cameron runs a hand through his dark wavy hair, something he does when he's stressed or frustrated.

"Lee" I freeze at his words and look up to him.

He's the only person in this world who calls me Lee. He started calling me that when we were just talking and it stuck. Whenever he calls me that I know he's serious and have to stop ignoring him.

"You're really going to use that card?" I give him a blank expression.

"Yeah, I am" he replies matter of factly. "I promise I'll talk to her about it"

"And"

"And buy you sweet tea and Doritos after school"

"Throw in a pack of suckers in there and you got yourself a deal"

"You are a two year old"

"No, three" I say definitely. Cam chuckles shaking his head. "Why are you in this class anyways?"

Art is an elective, most students choose something easy like health or school council where they just sit around planning prom and homecoming. That's what most of our friends choose but instead I chose art.

"Just wanted to change things up" he shrugged but I knew instantly he was lying. Before I could bring it up mrs.Bennet started talking.

"Welcome to art class, I'm so ecstatic to have you all here" she clasp her hands together. Her short, black bobbed hair swings lightly and her wrinkles form when she smiles. "Today's assignment is going to be to draw a picture of something in this room"

After explaining all the instructions and showing us where the art materials were. I decided to draw a picture of a pretty clay pot someone made a few years back.

I'm busy shading when I hear a frustrated curse coming out of Cam. I glance over to see him vigorously erasing on his paper. I glance over to see him drawing what I think is a .... chair.

"How do you do it so effortlessly" he groans throwing down his pencil. I shrug as he grabs my sketch book from me and his jaw drops. "It's only been like 30 minutes!"

I just snatch it back while he bangs his head on the table. "I hate you" he mumbles earning a giggle from me.

"You love me, now stop pouting you big baby and let me help you"

I swear, this boy has more hormones than me.
