《My Music Box》Chapter 3

You do as you're told. When the man with the cloak and monocle, Count Bleck, asks something of you, you do it without question. You don't know why you feel so obligated to help him, but you do.
You're worried about this guy. You're actually worried about everyone here, but this guy and the jester more so than others. You're especially worried about Dimentio. You can only read so much into him with that mask on, and you think maybe that's the reason he wears it.
But what you can read is not good. So, on the side, you ponder ways to prevent him from doing it.
You still don't know what 'it' is.
A small voice in you mind says, Love. Kindness. Show him kindness. That's the best way to stop someone from doing something bad.
Ah, you tell that voice. No thanks. Love, kindness, all that sounds pretty weak. What would people think of me?
Doesn't matter what people think of you, The voice says. If you can stop this guy from doing whatever it is he's doing, you should. You gotta at least try. You'll hate yourself if you don't.
You groan and look down at some spare parts. The Count requested that you be prepared to stop the heroes, so you've been working on a robotic brother. You don't know why you choose to make a robotic brother, but there's a deep feeling inside of you that tells you you should have some form of a brother. You feel... like maybe in another life you could have had one. Your brain is still messed up, but knowing what you know, it feels right.
But, you look down at those extra parts. The unneeded parts, and a soft, almost haunting song plays in your head. Hmm, you think to yourself.
And the voice in the back of your mind does a victory dance.
Why are you so happy? You ask the voice. What's with the celebrating?
You're going to listen to me. You're going to try to stop him.
You roll your eyes, and pick up the small parts. "No. I'm just an idiot," You mutter to yourself. Then, you start making something new.
______
You never get the chance to give what you've made to him. You half suspect that you won't get the chance too. It's located neatly in your room on the table. There's a small note inside. You wonder if he'll ever read it.
Not likely.
You honestly feel like some kind of sentimental idiot. Whenever you speak to the jester, he acts. He always acts. He refuses to be anything other than the character he's portraying. You have no idea who he really is under that mask.
It's frustrating to say the least. Every single time you see that smile you feel frustrated because you can't tell what it means.

But, you can't really judge him. You do the same thing when people talk to you. You're an actor as well. Another thing you two have in common. Whenever presented in front of multiple people, you decided to play the part of an arrogant, somewhat cocky, jerk. You do not know why you chose to be this character, but it feels like it's the part you were supposed to play.
But at least you let your guard down occasionally. He never does.
You lose to the heroes once. Failure. A small part of you wasn't surprised. The rest of you is. A giant robot, and in space, you should have won easily.
But it's me. I always lose.
Ah, you tell that voice. I can see you're back.
And I can see you still haven't given him that box, it tells you. Why not? Are you scared it won't work?
I know it wont work, you tell it. But no, that's not the reason.
Oh? So what is?
You pause a moment.
I feel like... he's got his mind set on this. I can tell it's bad, I can tell it's wrong, but apart of me wants to back him up.
You sigh.
But... I can't do that, because, for whatever reason, I know that if he continues down the path he's walking, he's going to get hurt. Just like the other guy.
Why don't you stop the other guy? The voice asks you. The guy with the monocle.
Because, you reply. He's got the girl with the pink hair already trying to stop him. This guy has no one.
______
Dimentio wants you to disobey the Count's orders and go stop the heroes. You can tell, he's trying to manipulate you.
No, he's trying to manipulate your character. You're sure he can tell you're acting.
But your character would go, so you go. You go to the ruined world. Mimi goes as well, but you can tell he was really mainly aiming to get you to go. You have no idea why.
Maybe, you think to yourself, Maybe I should give him the box before I leave.
You stop by your room to get your new and improved robotic brother and stare at it a moment.
.....Nah, you tell yourself. I'll give it to him when I get back.
......
You don't get back.
______
You lose. You always lose, but it still stings. Is that why he wanted you to come here? So you could just lose. You fail to see how coming here could benefit him in any way.
You don't understand.
"Aha ha ha. Did they wound your fragile pride, Mr. L? Demolish your robot again?"
You should have known.
You turn to face him, and... smile. For some sick reason, you're happy to see him. You think... maybe he's here to comfort you.

You're an idiot, and you don't know why you'd think such an outlandish, unreasonable thing.
"Oh, it's you again Dimentio. I'm stumped. You'd think a giant robot would be enough to crush these heroes."
You turn, and truly do feel like the failure you are. You don't want to look like a failure in front of him.
But, he doesn't know that. So you act like you're afraid of what the count will think. Yes, that's believable. You act as if his thoughts and views of you don't matter.
They do, but you don't tell him that.
"I'm a disgrace. There's no way I could show my face to Count Bleck after this."
"Perhaps that is for the best," He says, in a completely normal tone.
He's still acting. Why is he still acting?! It's just you two here. Your heart skips a beat, and you immediately wish you didn't put off giving the box to him for so long.
You slowly turn to face him, frowning.
Then, he waves his arms. A small explosion goes off from under your feet. You quickly jump back to avoid getting burned.
You should have given him the box sooner.
Oh, please. Like that would have done anything.
"Whoa, Now! Hey! What are you doing?!" You ask, trying to remain calm.
But, it's hard to be calm. You know what he's about to do. You don't even have to ask. You know.
This is what you didn't want him doing. This was it.
"You said it yourself! You can't go back to the count now. So get lost."
Ouch. Still hurt to hear it.
You decide to try to keep your cool. How would your character act during this scene.
Hug him, the voice says.
No! You reply. That's stupid. Why would you say that?!
Okay, don't hug him. But you gotta do something. Drop the act! If you don't, you won't be able to stop him.
You clench your fists and ignore the voice.
"Not a funny joke, Dimentio. If I wanted to laugh, your face is inspiration enough!"
You hear the voice in your head groan, then fall silent, as you smirk to yourself. Thank Grambi it finally shut up.
"Such temper. Your nostrils, they flare out like the hood of a hissing cobra," he replies. Your smile drops, as he floats closer.
You can hear your heartbeat in your ears. You wonder if this would still be happening if you were brave enough to give him the box.
"I can't have you around the count. If I am rid of you here, I won't be found out."
You wish he'd stop acting. You desperately wish he'd stop acting. It was just the two of you here. Why couldn't he at least give you something. You were standing here, letting him win. The least he could do was take off that metaphorical mask while he kills you.
But he doesn't. He's to smart to let anyone see who he really is. You think that's because he's afraid of letting emotions get in the way.
He sees that as a flaw.
Is it a flaw?
"And the others will never find you. Yes, this is my moment to grasp. It's time for you to take your final bow, Mr. L."
He flicks his wrist, and a glass box appears around you. You jump a little, then turn your gaze to him. He's smiling evilly.
You're going to die. You're going to die, and it's because you weren't brave enough to give him the stupid box.
No, you tell yourself. The box would have done nothing. This was always how things were going to turn out. You're just an idiot.
"Hey, now! Whoa! What's this? You've lost your mind, Dimentio!"
You stare into his icy eyes with a pleading expression.
But there's nothing in them. You search for something, but there's nothing.
There was always nothing. You had hoped that someday you's see something.
You still hope that someday you'll see something.
But there is nothing.
"Hey, don't do it please," you whisper.
"Ah ha ha ha ha, Shhhhh. Don't worry. It won't be so bad, I promise. I'll send those heroes your way soon, just so you'll have someone to play with."
You're never going to get to give him the box. You're never going to get to give him the stupid box.
Why is that the only thing you regret right now?!
You're standing here, about to die, and all you can think about is a stupid box!
"You know...." You whisper, placing a hand on the yellow glass, looking up at him. "I made you something."
His wicked smile falters for a second, but he stays silent.
"I left it in my room," You say. "It's just sitting on my desk. It's a small box."
He gives you an almost confused look.
Ah, you think. Confused is better than empty. Confused is at least something.
"When you get back home, since I won't be there to gift it to you, would you just walk in and take it. I want you to have it."
You look down.
"Please. That's all I ask of you."
The two of you wait in silence for a moment. You refuse to look up at him. You don't see how he reacts to this. You don't even know if he listened.
Did he even hear you?
All you hear, is the snap of his fingers, and explosions going off.
And your story ends.

This project has no purpose
Summary: This is the story about the life of a "human" amidst a world that only appears to be earth at first glance. Long ago the face of this world resembled the typical tales of yore; of knights and fairies, swords and magic, however such an era has come and gone. Even the world of fantasy has progressed steadily into the modern epoch filled with the wonders of science and technology! In the ancient times a certain crisis had occured that lead to the quick decline of various magical species. Due to their low population and general incompatibility with the other races they could not crossbreed to save their numbers. Left with no other choice the major races of the world gathered together in an attempt to change the fate of this dying world. Their only hope was a special 'world-tier' magic known as 'the dusk of harmony'. The result of this magic would dissolve every race into their purest essences known as 'aspect' and instill them within the human population. The humans were the best choice as their numbers were numerous and form was similar to most races. As such, the various races of this world managed to save themselves in essence and soul only, though perhaps there was no other choice. With the various humans now carrying the weight and aspects of those who came before, life has continued onto the modern age. Yet, even amongst these hybrids 'Pures' emerge from time to time, beings who have inherited not only aspects of the ancient races, but their forms too. These Pures are often times exceptionally talented and seen as near deities. This is the story of a perculiar boy who is born with the soul of a stranger from the world known as 'Earth'. With the memories and soul of a human, he too is a rare Pure; a pure human. --- This project literally has no purpose and is being written because I felt like it. There isn't any semblance of a solid direction nor have I thought about any characters aside from the main character and a few auxiliary cast. If you would like to contribute to building this world with me then please contact me through a DM or by leaving a comment, I will be sure to credit you.
