《Red Feather (Hawks x Reader)》I need to get my shit together and so do you, so hold my hand

So apparently Monday was a lot harder than I originally thought. I didn't get much sleep that night what with the strange new environment, empty of the homey touch my last place had. This place seemed too nice, new, and clean. The movers had dropped off the last of the boxes at about eleven, even though they still needed to move the bigger things like my bed and dresser. It looked so strange, boxes laying about seemed to mock me.

I frowned at them and rolled over on my makeshift cot. The light from my alarm clock gave my eyes a slight ache so I squinted them for a better look.

Fuck me it's four thirty. The most sleep I can get is two and a half hours. Fucking stupid bullshit. A new job isn't even a big deal! I get new jobs all the time. Go to fucking sleep, god damn.

Though I would never admit it out loud, or even finish the thought I knew it was because I'd see Hawks almost every day. What happens if I disappoint him? Would he take away my house for a different spy? No I don't think he'd do that.

I'll just have to do an amazing job.

I smiled to myself in sleep deprived determination. I blinked then-

What the hell?

Apparently what had happened was the moment my eyes shut, I crashed and woke up two minutes before my alarm went off. But I opened my eyes like no time passed.

That was cool as hell.

My back was a little stiff from sleeping on the floor but otherwise I was okay. Standing up I kicked the box that used to hold my blankets before I made a cot with them.

"I'm gonna do fucking great today", I said rather loudly for the time of day.

Walking to the mirror in my new bathroom, I grabbed the sides of the sink and pointed at my reflection. "I'm gonna kick ass and take names", I continued pumping myself up with giddy joy.

Of course all of that confidence dwindled to almost nothing by the time I made it to the front. I pulled at my shirt buttons, fiddling with the thing as I thought about all of the ways I could screw up.

I can't even eat! These are my nicest clothes and the only ones I have for work. What if I spill something on it and I look like a slob? Oh my god what if I mix up files? Or if I can't catch the spies! I don't want to be useless.

I felt a hand on my shoulder. When I turned my head I came face to face with a big yellow beak. Looking up a little more I saw dark eyes. "Are you lost", the deep voice questioned.

"No... I guess I'm just nervous. First day and all", I chuckled awkwardly.

"Oh. Well good luck then", the kid with a bird face said evenly, his hand leaving my shoulder. He walked into the agency and disappeared from view as the doors shut.

My thoughts were interrupted by my dollar store watch beeping and I freaked out a little bit, knowing that beeping meant I was a few minutes late.

Scidattling into the building, I was met with a brown eyed woman with matching brown hair. She was a little on the overweight side but she looked beautiful. "Hello, how may I help you?"

I quickly scanned for a name tag and found one. "Hello... Gabriella. Uh, I'm (y/n), and I'm here to see Lucy?"

She looked on her computer with clicking sounds and seemed to scroll forever. When she was satisfied she gave a final click. "Sorry, it just took a minute to find you in this schedule. Give me a moment please."

She picked up the phone and dialed calling Lucy. Not a minute later a lady showed up with black mid back length curly hair. Her ebony skin shined and damn her cheekbones didn't quit. She gave me a polite smile.

She showed me my spot and explained the basics of my job to me. I was basically a glorified librarian to tell you the truth. I organized, read over, and transported hard copies of files.

Hawks's voice rang through my head, "You'll be walking around and socializing with the other workers. It's perfect to snoop around. Once you get the name of suspected person, let me know. Also, I know you're practically head over heals for me but you have to act like you don't like me. Or at least indifferent. If they think you like me a little too much, they won't trust you if you try to get close to them."

"I am not! I- I just. Oh stop looking at me like that."

He chuckled. "Why? You seem to like the attention I give you", he said dangerously.

I tried to give him a glare but with the way I was flustered, the best I could manage was a pouty frown.

"Tch, Whatever. Why not place your feathers around? I don't see why you need me."

"Back to business, fine with me. I need you because this building is seventeen stories. Even if I were to sit naked in a cave with water trickling around me and Buddha's inner peace, I wouldn't be able to pick up on everything that happens in every room. Total sensory overload. Not to mention I need them for fighting as well, that's a lot of feathers to keep track of."

I looked down. Then I felt a finger under my chin. Hawks was using his pointer finger to tilt my head up and look at him. "Since keeping track of the whole company is impossible, you'll have Gabriela to talk with. She is also working under me in this special little secret force we have. She will scope out suspicious people, and you will be their primary information link."

I snapped back into reality when I heard my stomach rumble and started to dig in my purse for the lunch I brought. However, I felt the absence of my sandwich and grumbled. In the hurry I was in, I forgot it at home.

A ring from my phone distracted me from my pouting and I answered it with nervousness dripping from my voice. "Y-yes hello?"

"I need I file from the criminal files, should be under the name 793, Wild Card. To room b7", the nameless voice said, bored.

I searched the file in the system and the computer told me where it was located. I grabbed it and scuddled out of the door. And that was pretty much my day. My entire day. It was around six and I was packing up a little so I could go home when I got another ring, this time from my personal phone. I tiredly picked it up and I heard a smooth chipper voice over the phone.

"Hey, chickadee. How's work?"

"Oh, Hawks. Hi. Uhm it's good. I forgot my lunch today though."

"Well then, wanna go to dinner? We never actually got to go on account of my getting my ass beat."

I chuckled, "Yeah I remember. Sure! When are we going?"

"You want me to come down there and fly you to the spot?"

"No... No flying", I grabbed my stomach, remembering how flying felt, and how it scared me.

"Awww come on. You don't trust me?"

"No it's nothing like that! I'm just scared of height and you go so fast I just-"

"Look kid I'll cut you a deal. I'll just leisurely glide there, yeah? I won't go too fast."

I swallowed and mumbled a fine. As soon as I did I heard a tap on glass and looked over to the other side of the room. Hawks was at the window outside. He smirked at me through the crystal clear glass and hung up. I scurried over there and opened it so he could come in.

He had changed out of his work clothes and was wearing a (rather tight) white t-shirt, loose black pants, and black and white converse that looked doodled on, on the side where the white parts were. His perfect body was done proper justice with that shirt, though. I wanted to touch his stomach and run my hands over his chest, he looked so damn beautiful.

He smirked, catching me staring again, for the hundredth time.

It's not my fault that he looks like that! It's not my fault you're obviously the God's favorite.

"You could use the door you know", I huffed, changing the subject of our silent conversation.

He slid his phone back into his pants and smiled a cheeky smile. "I could, but it's less fun. How was your day, doll?"

"Well I just did my job. When is Gabriela going to send me a person?"

"Well, you're going to work the regular job tomorrow too, just to make sure you got the hang of it. Then day after, you'll be given a person. Gabriela said she had 4 people on the list so you'll be a busy bee."

"Oh. Okay. Hey, where are we going", I grabbed my purse.

"It's a surprise", he grinned.

"Are you sure we have to fly..."

"You already agreed! And it gives you an excuse to hold me, so what's the problem?"

I was facing away from him, getting my things together but I could practically hear the smirk on his face. When I turned back around, sure enough, the face I had come to know so well was grinning like the Cheshire Cat.

"Oh hush you. I'll take my car."

"Awww come on. Don't be a chicken", he snickered," You said you were ready to face the dangers of this job, which means you were willing to be in a dangerous situation, yeah?"

"Yeah", I said slowly, suspicious of his motives.

"Which means you're willing to do something you're scared of."

I sighed, catching his drift. "Yeah..."

"So since you're scared of flying, guess what we're gonna go do?"

I walked over to him with my purse with a defeated look on my face. "Fly."

He took my hand and walked to the open window. "Don't sound so down. You'll have a lot of fun where we're going", he said suggestively.

My ears were pink when he guided me by my hips onto the window sill and came up behind me. I refused to look down because of the fact that we were nine stories up. I felt Hawks wrap his arms around my waist and I clinged to him with all of the strength I could muster.

"You know, I won't drop you. Promise", he said smoothly, his breath tickling the side of my face.

"I know", I mumbled.

"On one."

I tightened my grip on his arms and nodded. The wind was slapping my face leaving a sting and howled, even though it was the one assaulting me.

"Three."

I took a deep breath. Hawks closed the window behind us.

"Two-one!" Hawks yelled, jumping for the both of us.

I squeaked with surprise but instead of the other times where he jumped and let us fall for a bit then pulling up last second, he straightened his wings immediately and glided as promised.

I was still holding on for dear life when he started speaking. "So (y/n), meet anyone who seems nice?"

It was obvious that he was just trying to take my mind off the fact that we were so goddamn high. "Um- well I met a kid with a bird face... He was nice. I was nervous about coming in and he made sure I was okay."

"Oh you met Tokoyami! He's my apprentice. Really nice kid, I'm trying to get him to lighten up a little. He tries to be so dark and edgy but his quirk, dark shadow, is a sweetheart and gives him away."

He seemed to have a lot of pride in the kid. It doesn't sound like him and this Tokoyami kid are too different. Both of them are hiding themselves and at the same time, giving themselves away.

I was staring to calm down and a bunch of lights caught my eye. It looked like a festival and I mentally took note if it, planning in going after work tomorrow. Turns out I didn't have to because we started descending in its direction.

We landed suddenly and I was a little wobbley.

I better get used to flying, this is embarrassing.

"Awww, you okay?" Hawks cooed in a playfully condescending tone.

I turned around to glare but I turned too fast and lost a little bit of balance. Hawks's hands made their way to my hips to steady me, which wouldn't bother me except that during the ride, my shirt had ridden up and his hands were on my bare hips.

I know I shouldn't freak out about something small like that but his warm rough hands just sat there. I didn't realize he was wearing a few rings until I felt the cold metal against my skin. His hands lingered longer than necessary, not that I was complaining in the least bit. "Thanks", I breathed.

His eyes were half lidded and practically glowing with the smirk on his face highlighting the fact that he knew exactly where my mind was.

He slowly took his hands away and I caught that look of guilt in his eyes. He was still trying to hide himself behind his Hawks persona, but a little bit of the real him slipped through seemingly unnoticed by him.

His eyes looked so sad and lonely, and so so guilty. Cover that though, and every part of him screamed cheeky and upbeat.

He seemed to snap out of it the moment I thought he was going to address what happening in his head and he hid again.

"So! I was thinkin we eat a light snack at one of the stands, walk around and see the cool carts and knick knacks, then we eat a full dinner, yeah?" He started walking.

I tried to give him my best understanding look catching up with him and prayed I wasn't overstepping my boundaries. My hand shook a bit in fear of rejection as I tentatively held his wrist and pulled it out of his pocket. He looked startled by the contact but my the way he reacted I knew he was internally praying I didn't let go, the touched starved man.

I felt his eyes try to steal my glance to ask why as I looked straight ahead and tangled our fingers together gently. His hand was big and rough and mine was no doubt smaller than his but it was still definite that I was holding his hand. Though he gripped me back, I was the one silently comforting him. Still walking, he looked down at my hand and softly smiled, pulling me a little closer so our arms were touching and we made our way into the festival together.
