《Red Feather (Hawks x Reader)》What a bitch

About a week has passed since the night of the party. Now I was packing boxes to move into my new apartment. I also was mentally preparing for my new job. I was basically going to be an assistant. I was fine with that but the assistant job was so narrow, it would make it harder to find the spy or spies. At least, that's what Hawks had told me.

We had been texting over the last week arranging small details. I went through a class and took a few tests that gauged whether or not I could even handle the job before Hawks payed for a whole nother apartment. The tests just made sure I could make a convincing lie on the spot, could write a decent report, and see if I had the mental capacity to see if I could handle the stress and the possible danger.

It was a difficult week. Non stop tests and training. Oh yeah! Training!

It wasn't too hard but it was tricky. I learned a little bit of hand to hand combat, but it sounds more impressive than it is. I just learned how to throw a proper punch, duck and evade attacks, get out of a few common holds, and disarm. Then I practiced those over and over again. For hours.

All in all it was fun but very tiring. I made a C in almost everything but by day 3 I was starting to get the hang of it and finished with all A's except for the report part. I got a B.

Then after all of those mentally and physically taxing hours, I had to come home and pack. It wasn't a long process because I don't have much. It just seems like a lot when you come home tired and sore.

I taped a box shut and let out an annoyed huff. When I looked over at the microwave, it told me it was six. The movers are coming at eight. I still have some of my dishes to pack, along with some bedroom and bathroom stuff that I didn't want to pack just yet. I was just about to get to that when I heard my door open and a familiar voice ring from the hallway.

"Hey bitch", the voice drew out.

I peeked my head around the corner, clutching the small fake feather that I had gotten at a hero convention. Guess who's merch it was?

"Oh my god, what the fuck? There are so many boxes. You moving?"

It was my friend that left me alone at the bar. The one who was the reason I have a new job. The one who ignored me when we went out that night.

"Oh, uh. Yeah I'm moving. Knock next time though, Ashlyn."

The brunette let out an exaggerated sigh. "I can't believe you're moving and didn't tell me! I thought we were friends", she whined, "Anyway, where are you moving?"

"You know where the Hawks agency is?"

"Oh my god tell me you are not thirsty enough for him that you moved closer to see him. You've liked him forever! He's kinda ugly."

My face flushed at the accusation. "No I'm not moving to be close to him! I'm moving because I got a job offer."

"How? Bitch, you worked minimum wage jobs all your life, how the fuck did you get a job offer", she asked rudely while sitting on my bed and taking off her heals.

"Hard work", I said, "I applied and they took me. "

"Ooh! Where are you working", she through her high heels across the room onto a box.

I was starting to take the tacks out if my Hawks poster. "Hawks agency." I muttered.

She started cackling, "Oh girl really? It's such a big city, you can't handle it. And Hawks agency? You totally lost it. Be real do you think he'll notice you like that?"

Deep down I knew she had a point. He's flirted with me but he seems to do that with everyone. "No."

"Exactly! You should just keep working your little jobs and stay here. We could totally go to the club again."

"I'd be making more money though. Ashlyn, I barely can afford this place and it's small as hell. I'm getting a new pad!"

"Honey, I can tell", she gestured around the room to the boxes.

That statement made me feel stupid.

If course she knows you're moving. You're not exactly hiding it!

I sheepishly chuckled, "Yeah I know but I'd make so much more money than I do now."

"Well what are you going to be doing?"

"I'm mainly going to be an assistant. With a few more responsibilities."

"Like what?"

"Well, file keeping. If anyone needs a specific file I go get it for them. Or if they need to add something for the file I check it out."

I opened a new box and looked over. Ashlyn was tapping away on her phone. "Sounds stupid."

I frowned at her comment and continued packing. "So... Why'd you come over?"

"Oh I wanted to know if you'd come out partying with me tonight. "

"Sorry, but I have to pack and make sure the movers know where to put stuff and... I just really can't right now."

"Lame. Alright then, the other thing was can I have some cash?"

"I- uh. Are you strapped for money?"

"No it's just that the place I'm going doesn't have an ATM and I don't want to have to hunt for one."

"I mean, how much?"

"Eighty dollars."

That's what I spend on food over a few weeks. I can't afford that.

"I mean you're getting a new job that pays better so you'll be okay", she said, cleaning her nails.

She has a point. She'll probably pay you back.

"Will you pay me back?"

"I don't know, probably."

I sighed and took the small box of emergency money I kept on the shelf. I took eighty dollars out and closed it again.

This is a little under half of what I have in there.

I can't just pull out the money, then put it back. That's a dick move. Against my better judgement, I handed over the money. She snatched it out of my hands and grabbed her shoes. "Thanks love! You're amazing."

And with that, she walked back out of my house.

I looked over at the box where I kept my "oh shit" money and recounted.

I crossed out the '213' and I wrote '$133' in it's place.

By the time I was done packing, it was seven thirty and I was tuckered out. I was sitting on my stripped futon that was too big for a box and watching TV.

Apparently I dozed off because I heard a knock at the door. When I wiped the drool off of my cheek I got up and opened the door drowsily.

"Guess what, kid? You passed the final test!"

I opened my eyes and Hawks was stand in there with a moving crew behind him. I stepped to the side and all four trailed in. The three movers got to work and Hawks walked next to me.

He chuckled, "Were you asleep? You have lines on your face."

I was still processing what was happening and reached up to touch my cheek. "Oh. Wait I passed a test?"

"You sure did. I've been keeping an eye on you to make sure you aren't a villain because I did pick you up off the street. Didn't mean to make it sound like you were a stray dog."

"Woof", I said sarcastically, "Wait, how have you been keeping an eye on me?"

"It's a secret, but you're smart, you'll figure it out eventually."

I had woken up a bit to realize what was actually happening. "Uh, Hawks?"

"Hm?"

"I know you gave me the address of my new apartment and everything, but I never got to see it."

"Well then we have to change that! The movers will take care if everything, kiddo. Wanna fly to your new spot?"

"What about my car?"

"We'll figure something out", he said with a cheeky smile.

"Okay I guess. Are you going to go super fast?"

"Why, do you want me to go slow?", he cocked an eyebrow suggestively.

He chuckled while I silently fumed. "It's fine kid, we'll go at whatever speed you're comfortable with."

He held my hand and took me to my balcony. I was then indignantly scooped up and he bolted into the air, taking off at a high speed. Once we got to the height he wanted, he slowed down and glided.

Meanwhile I was holding on for dear life. When I looked down, I could see the blocks of the city.

"You could loosen your grip kiddo, you're making it hard to breathe", Hawks strained.

"Well maybe if you gave me more of a warning- oh my god we're so high."

"Oh come on, I'd never let you fall. Wanna get there faster?"

"Okay but you have to warn me when you go. "

"Put these in", he said shuffling around to grab something. He handed me earplugs and a set of glasses, "you'll need them."

"For what?"

"It's gonna get loud and the air might hurt your ears. And I want you to see what we're doing. "

"How fast are you planning on going?" I asked worried, putting the ear plugs in and the glasses on.

Instead if answering he angled himself down so that we we're gliding through the air, picking up speed.

"Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck!" I screamed.

When I looked back at Hawks he was smirking and looking straight ahead. He mouthed hold on and went straight down.

It I didn't shit my pants before I was doing it then. It was terrifying. We weren't falling at a normal speed, we seemed to be going as fast as a jet. My ears popped and we passed the buildings. We were about fifty feet from traffic when he pulled up and flew parallel to the ground. The speed we gained from the pull up was immense.

I clinged onto Hawks desperately trying to remind myself of the fact his arms we're constrictingly tight around my stomach and chest, holding me securely

I'm going to beat the fuck out of him are you fucking kidding me I'm going to die I'm going to die I'm going to die.

He slowed down quite a bit and landed on a balcony. He let me go and slid open the door, and I was left outside wobbling and queasy. He looked back and frowned. "You okay kid?"

I was steadying myself on the wall and holding my stomach. "Yeah it was fun and all but- I'm going to throw up"

He lead me through my new apartment to sink in the kitchen, and he held my hair back.

"This seemed familiar-" He started.

He rubbed my back apologetically and the feeling passed eventually. Thank god I didn't throw up again.

"Sorry kid, I wont-"

"That was really fun- minus the end."

His face changed from a hint of guilt to happiness. "Damn, really?"

"Absolutely."

"Well alright then, your boxes should be completely unloaded in about an hour. Wanna look around?"

"Hell yeah."

The apartment was way bigger than the last one. When you walk in the door there is a little hallway with a closet on the right and an office/study on the left. It then opens up to a large living room. If you follow the living room left and cross it, it opens up to a dining room and kitchen. The balcony is in the dining room. But if you walk in and go right, you find another hallway with a bedroom on the right, a bathroom in the middle, and the master bedroom on the left.

"Jesus, this place is big. How much is rent?"

He gave a proud smile. "Nothing! This is free! I saved the owner one time from a girl with a blood copying quirk. They offered the apartment for no pay"

"Free... Hawks this is too much. This... This is a lot. Don't get me wrong I love it but how am I going to pay you back?"

"You're giving me info, remember?"

"Okay yeah, but I'm already getting a paycheck for that."

"Actually, you're getting payed to do company things. This is your payment to get information."

"Oh. I guess that makes sense. Hey Hawks?"

He was fiddling with the stove. "Hm?"

"So since you get hurt a lot... I was thinking. What if I get my blood drawn and you can keep the bags, you know? Like I could kinda donate them to you-"

"Absolutely not."

"What? Why? "

"Look (y/n), your healing quirk is the second most powerful healing quirk I have heard of. But it has a lot of repercussions. Healing me isn't like healing a friends knife cut. I get seriously hurt out there."

"Okay."

He seemed to notice how I sunk a bit and sighed. He reached in his pocket and pulled out a wrapped hard candy and tossed it to me. In my surprise, I fumbled a bit, but I still caught it. It was a small chicken candy that looked like it tasted like strawberry.

I chuckled and unwrapped it. "What the hell, it's so random. Thanks though."

He smirked, "I give it to little kids when they're upset."

I smacked him on the arm and he laughed. "Hey! I'm kidding I'm kidding."

I heard buzzing and momma I'm in love with a criminal come from Hawks's pocket. He shoved his hand into his pocket and pulled out his phone. Looking at the contacts, he groaned in annoyance and answered. "What?... Where?... How many?... Gotcha. On my way."

He put the phone back into one of his jacket pockets and turned around to walk to the balcony.

"Why don't you use the door like a normal person?" I joked.

"Because it's more dramatic!" He pushed open the sliding glass door with flare and hopped up on the balcony wall, then turned around. "You start work this Monday. Report to the desk and ask for Lucy, she'll show you around. See you later kid", he hollered. He straightened his jacket, pushed his hand through his hair then saluted, giving me a cheeky smile before jumping backwards and disappearing from sight.
