《Steam of Britain》Chapter 23: John the Standard Class

John, the new BR Standard Class 5, was working hard at King's Cross. He could be seen pulling passengers, or goods along the mainline. Many of the other engines didn't trust him, not after what happened with Geoffrey the 9F. Even though he took a load off their buffers, they were still suspicious of him.

That night, Steve complained to John. "You're just a rip off!" he said. "What's that supposed to mean?!?" asked John indignantly. "You standards are nothing more than rip offs of engines that already exist!!" "That was rude!" said Alison. "It's true!!" "ENOUGH!!!" thundered Bertram, "We all are different in our own ways, whether we are Standard Classes, one of the Big Four, or predating them!" The engines then went to sleep.

The next morning, the engines went about their day as usual. Mallard, Flying Scotsman, and Silver Link headed up to Scotland, Max, Perry, Norvin and Rattler were shunting in the yards, Arron took his goods to the south, while Steve, City of Truro and Alison took some passengers in land, and Duchess took her Coronation Express. Bertram, Alex, Marcus and Morgan took the local, Trooper and Harold headed to the coal mine, and Barrow, Jack, Diesel 10, and John collected some extra trucks to be loaded with lumber. Barrow and John talked, while Diesel 10 loaded the logs, and Jack shunted loaded and empty lumber trucks. "Is that Steve always like that?" he asked. "No," said Barrow, "Steve's a kind engine, although he can have a temper." "I just don't understand why I can't be friends." "Heh," said Diesel 10, "try befriending a steam engine when you were a diesel in the time steam was being with drawn. We were total bullies. Trust me, I did somethings I regret." "I know what it's like," said John, "I was the teasing of many diesels." "Just know, preservation is a special thing," said Jack, "We're lucky. Dozens of our kind have been withdrawn and scrapped. So don't let it go to you're smoke box."

Soon, the engines took the lumber to Barrow, where Steve was with his passenger train. John didn't pay any attention to him, but Steve went on to rant about how John was not a proper engine. This started to annoy the engines to no end. Soon, John got so annoyed, that he decided to take matters into his own buffers.

Later in the yards, Steve rolled right up to him, and before he could say anything, John interrupted, and said, "RIP OFF?! COPYCAT!? UN-PROPER!?!? WELL, I'LL TELL YOU WHAT I THINK OF YOU!!!" John then proceeded to tell Steve off, with some very colorful, language. The yard fell silent, and John just puffed off to find another place to rest.

Steve later backed down on a sighting, and said, "I-I'm sorry. I-I just feel like British Railways was wanting to replace me and my class when they said yours were called, 'Standard'." John was taken back by this. "Well," said John, "I'm sorry for saying those things earlier. I may have let my temper get the better of me. Though, it's those diesels that are responsible for making it." "What do you mean?" "I was often bullied, and they kept saying that every steamie would be scrapped within 5 months. But I stood up to them, I even biffed some, but the managers didn't approve of it, even though they were bullies." Steve smiled, "I know what that's like. I often stood up for the young ones." Soon, the two engines talked endlessly of steam, and they soon became the best of friends.
