《Steam of Britain》Chapter 3: Modernization

It was a bright day in Britain. (BANG!!!) Well almost bright. "UGH!!!!" yelled Steve on the track. He had just derailed due to a set of faulty points. A diesel came by laughing, until he derailed as well. "Not so funny now, huh?" asked Steve, "I hate these new points that British Railways has made." Recently, British Railways had made new rails that were used to hold the new standards they were going for. When they were completed, they were a joy to run on, but the there were also some new electronic signals and points, which put many signal boxes and signal men out of service. The new signals and points were connected to various control centers allowing entire regions to be controlled by just a hand full of people. Unfortunately, many of these new signals and points were faulty and were brought out before testing. This caused many delays, and much annoyance with passengers.

Trooper, Arron and Mallard were in the yards, waiting for a delivery of new trucks to be brought. "So, Steve got into an accident?" asked Arron. "Yep," said Trooper, "I swear, British Railways is doing everything backwards: You don't send something out for it to fail and then test it, you test it first so they don't fail in the first place!! This never happened in the glory days of steam!!" "Ugh," said Mallard, "What would Sir Nigel Gresley think of this railway now?" "I don't know," said Trooper, "But I must say, these new trucks are very nice." The new trucks had metal bodies, at-toned for the old ones, who had wooden bodies. "Don't cause as much trouble?" asked Mallard. "No, but there is some friction between them. The new boys think that they're superior to the others because they're newer than them." "It's not an opinion, it's true!" said a voice. The engines looked to see a 9F with a long line of trucks.

"WHAT IN BLAZES!?!? WHO ARE YOU!?!" asked Arron. "I am Geoffrey. And I'm here to deliver some new rolling stock for King's Cross. And it looks like I'm just in time, what an antique fleet!! It must be torchere to use such relics, but worry not, these are built for the BR standard." Geoffrey then looked at Trooper, and asked, "And what are you supposed to be: the special attraction?" "No, I work at a coal mine," said Trooper. Geoffrey laughed, "YOU'RE STILL IN SERVICE!?!? Well, if their so desperate for engines, I suppose you two are still in service as well? What are your jobs?" "Heavy goods," said Arron. "High speed non-stop express service," said Mallard. Geoffrey then laughed again, "YOU TWO!?! OH, MY SQUARE BOY, IF YOU'RE HEAVY GOODS, YOU'RE OUT OF LUCK!!!! YOU COULDN'T PULL HALF OF WHAT I CAN!!!!" "Don't be so sure," said Mallard, "Arron here has pulled goods trains for years." "Does one of them include 40 wagons and 1,000 tons?" "No, 45 wagons and 1,001 tons is the heaviest I've pulled alone." Geoffrey was amazed, but didn't show it. "Pah, I could pull that much and more. I have a return train to take back to Liver Pool. Where is it?" "Ask Bertram," said Mallard, "He should be at the platform shunting coaches." "Very well, Ta-Ta for now." "TA-TA FOREVER!!" said Arron, and frowned. "Arron, don't try to out compete him, you know how last time went when you tried that against a diesel engine." Arron didn't like to be reminded of the time his boiler burst, and was in need of a new one.

Geoffrey looked at the station with amazement. "Wow," he said, "It's amazing. I would've loved to see this station in the glory days of steam." He then saw Bertram shunting Duchess' coaches, and he saw Geoffrey. "Oh, hello there," said Bertram, "you're new, aren't you? Well, my name is-" "A MUSEUM!!!" "What?" "That's what this station is, a museum!! First a J70 tram engine, then a Q1, and now a B12?!? What is this railway gone to?!?" "We have been preserved to show the glory days of steam, and we were luck enough to still be in service, like you." "Whatever, where's my train?" "Right there," said Bertram, "Perry and Max are arranging the last few trucks, and they should be ready soon with the break van." "You call that a heavy goods?!? I could take that on one cylinder if I wanted. Do you have anything else headed for Liver Pool?" "Well, we have a train of fuel tankers goi.... WAIT, YOU'RE NOT SERIOUSLY THINKING ABOUT TAKING THEM!?!?" "Yes, I am." "You'll never be able to take it up the in-climb by yourself!!" "I can, and will." "Well, if you do that, you'll need to talk with the station master first." "Very well, just wait and see that he agrees with me."

Geoffrey backed down on his train angrily while saying, "I can't believe it!!!" "He said yes," said Bertram. "Yes, but he said to have a banker at the least!! THIS was the whole reason I was built: To take heavy goods over long distances! And I keep getting told off by old kettles like you!!" "Did you think that maybe they were just trying to help?" asked Bertram, "That they were trying to pass some of their wisdom onto you? The whole reason we're still functioning as a railway is because we help each other. Yes, we all need help every now and then, but it takes a big engine to admit it." Geoffrey just rolled his eyes and puffed off. "Fine," he said as he left, "I'll take the banker's help, if they're useful."

All along the line, engines were amazed at the size of the train that Geoffrey was pulling. He then heard a whistle, and saw Duchess suddenly race by him, saying, "CORONATION EXPRESS, COMING THROUGH!!" Geoffrey just scoffed, and said, "A Coronation Class? I can't believe that she's even still around like that."

Soon, Geoffrey arrived at a station, and saw Daniel. "Hello," said the diesel, "I'm Daniel, and I'm the banker." "If you don't break down or over heat!!!!" laughed Geoffrey. Daniel just frowned, "Just go on and let me push you, you bully diesel." "I'M NOT A DIESEL!!!" "You're acting like one." Geoffrey then puffed off with Daniel helping push. They made it half way up, and they were soon stuck. At the same time, Arron came with a heavy goods train. He saw the station master, and said, "What's the problem?" "Geoffrey is stuck on the in-climb. Daniel is the banker, but they've come to a stand still. Not a surprise given the size of the train he was pulling." "How long we talking?" "I don't know, I lost count after 36. You think you could help out?" "Say no more, I'll go help."

When Arron saw Daniel, he was shocked!! "STEAMING PISTONS!!!!" said Arron, "NOT EVEN A 9F COULD PULL THIS MUCH ON THEIR OWN WITHOUT GETTING STUCK AT SOME POINT!!!!!" "I know," said Daniel. "What is it with this guy?" asked Arron. "Maybe he's trying to prove himself," said Daniel's driver. "What do you mean?" asked Daniel. "Maybe he's trying to prove he's worthy of still working. I mean, his class was built at a bad time. They started production just before they announced that they would start withdrawing steam. Maybe he wants to become part of some heritage line or a part of our fleet." "I don't know," said Arron, "but maybe that is the case."

The guard walked up to Geoffrey and asked, "What's the problem Geoffrey?" "I'VE USED UP MOST OF MY SAND BOXES, AND I'M STILL AT A STANDSTILL!! I KNEW THAT DIESEL WAS USELESS, JUST LIKE THE REST OF THEM!!!" "Geoffrey," said the guard, "I do not want to hear you bad mouthing any other engine for the rest of the trip, or else, I'll see to it that you remain a banker at a station. AM I CLEAR!?!" "Y-Y-Y-Y-Y-Y-Y-Yes sir," said Geoffrey. "STEAMING PISTONS!!!!! NOT EVEN A 9F COULD PULL THIS MUCH ON THEIR OWN WITHOUT GETTING STUCK AT SOME POINT!!!!!" " Ah, Arron's here." "Arron, that......" Geoffrey then thought long and hard about what he was about to say, before continuing, "........sturdy Q1 that will no doubt be useful helping us." "That's right, he will. Now, when you hear two whistles and honks, pull."

Soon, there were two whistles, and two honks, and the train headed up the hill. "TRICK TROCK, TRICK TROCK!!" sang the trucks. The engines gave the train a tough and push, and they made it up the in-climb. Geoffrey smiled, as he went down the hill. (end at 0:53)

That night, Geoffrey came back, and said to the engines, "I'm sorry for calling you all out-dated." "It's alright," said Mallard, "We've all said some things in our past we kind of regret as well." "I.....I......I just didn't want to be scrapped, since I'm the prototype, and none of the prototypes of any class have survived." The engines were amazed. "Wait," said Max, "Daniel did." "What?" asked Geoffrey. "Yes, I'm the Deltic Diesel prototype." "How did you end up here?" asked Geoffrey. The engines then told the story of how they each were saved from scrap, and managed to even stay in service. Then, the shed master came, and said, "Geoffrey, there you are. You're sleeping here tonight, and then, you'll be sent to a heritage line by lorry." "You mean, I'll be preserved?" asked Geoffrey. "Yes," said the shed master, "Now, get some sleep. We all have a big day ahead of us."

Now, Geoffrey can be seen taking tourists from down the country side, and whistling happily. He even sometimes helps at King's Cross, and then engines were happy to have him. One day, a new diesel engine was to be tested out, but that's another story.
