《Steam of Britain》Chapter 1: King's Cross

It was a bright day in Britain, and many engines on the railway were getting ready for work. And these engines had worked on the railway for many years. These engines were overhauled since they have been preserved and chosen to still work on British Railways. "Oh man," said Mallard, "I feel like I was just hit by a freight train."

Mallard is an LNER A4 Pacific designed by Sir Nigel Gresley. He is bright blue, with the numbers 4468 on his front and cab, the letters LNER on his tender, four guide wheels, six large driving wheels, and two supporting his cab. He has worked on non-stop express services called the Elizabethan. He is also the world's fastest steam engine, going on a single stretch of track for just a moment, 126 mph, becoming a credit to the railways and history books.

"Oh calm down Mallard," said Flying Scotsman, "You didn't just get torn apart and put back together to become an A1 again."

The Flying Scotsman is perhaps the most famous steam engine in the world. He is an LNER A1 Pacific designed by Sir Nigel Gresley. Like Mallard, he has four guide wheels, six driving wheels, and two small wheels supporting his cab. He is painted Apple Green, has smoke deflectors to keep steam from blocking the cab's view, with the numbers 4472 on his cab, and the letters LNER on his tender. Flying Scotsman is known for many things, including pulling the first ever non-stop express, and being the first engine to go 100 mph. He is also the only surviving member of his class, which saddens him a bit. But he remembers his brother Gordon, the A0 prototype that paved the way for his class, on Sodor. At one point, he was rebuilt to become an A3, which had a bigger boiler, and larger fire box, but was restored to an A1 in his most recent over haul.

"Oh relax," said Harry, "You guys look fine. I'm just glad to be out of the work shop."

Harry is a GWR Hall class. He has four guide wheels, and six driving wheels. Unlike Mallard and Flying Scotsman, he has no small wheels supporting his cab, is painted a darker shade of green, has the words Great Western on his tender, with a crest on it, and green. He worked on the Great Western Railway with stopping express services. He also has a preserved brother at a museum called Oltan Hall. Unlike Harry, Oltan Hall is painted Crimson, which was his choice when British Railways was formed.

"Hmph, men, such big babies," said Duchess of Hamilton.

The Duchess of Hamilton is an LMS Coronation class. Like Flying Scotsman and Mallard, she has four guide wheels, six large driving wheels, and two supporting her cab. She is painted crimson like Oltan Hall, but with yellow stripes. Her streamlined casing is an upgrade she got for her class to hold the world record of fastest engine in the world for a brief time. When her overhaul was being done, she chose to keep her casing, and said she will try for Mallard's record, but she said it as a joke, but the workers thought she was serious.

"I don't understand what the fuss is about," said Duchess of Hamilton, "You are all just babies. So, maybe try to be a woman, and not whine." "Hey, Duch," said Trooper, "Be nice. We have all been preserves to show future generations what made the railways what they are today. And we are lucky to even be in service."

Trooper is the oldest engine in the fleet. He is an LNER J70 Tram Engine. He is made of wood, has side plates and cow catchers, covering his wheels. He has a small coach called Amelia, who is a GER Wisbech and Upwell Tramway 4-wheel coach. The two have worked together since the days of the GER, when Trooper was known as a C53. Trooper is in charge of tramway that goes up to the coal mine, so he takes workers up there, and brings coal to King's Cross when they need it.

"Yes indeed," said Bertram, "I think we should be thankful. Not many engines like us have the honor of still being in service."

Bertram is an LNER B12. Like Harry, he has four guide wheels, and six large driving wheels. But unlike him, his cylinders are on the inside. Trooper and Harry have worked together since the days of the GER, when Bertram was classified as an S69. He was once a prime express engine, but now a days, he can't keep up with the Pacifics and the other express engines.

"Well," said Arron, "I'd say that you express engines need to maybe change the trains you pull. If you become a heavy goods engine like me, then maybe you'll know what real work is."

Arron is a SR Q1 locomotive. He called the strangest engine on the railway. He is painted black, has six driving wheels, his boiler is square, and he was built for heavy goods. He may not look like it, but he is one of the strongest engines on the line.

"Well," said Max, "That's just express engines for ya, too baby to even touch trucks." "Oh Max," said Perry, "You shouldn't say that. We all have our own opinions of trains."

Max is an LNER J51 Tank Engine. He has six small wheels, side tanks that extend all the way to his smoke box, a large coal bunker, and is painted red with the numbers 215 on his bunker. He often shunts and is station pilot at King's Cross. He enjoys getting trains ready, and watching as they puff out of the station. He also like to pull trains every now and then.

Perry is a GWR Pannier Tank Engine. Like Max, he has six small wheels, but is a bit larger than Max. He is painted green like Harry, and helps with shunting and local passenger and goods. He also helps on some of the branch lines that go from the main line and to smaller areas.

"Well, maybe they should be mixed traffic engines, like me!" said Steve, as he pulled out of the shop.

Steve is an LMS Black 5 mixed traffic engine. Mixed traffic engines are built to pull both passengers and goods. Steve sees himself as a hard worker, who is not afraid to pull any train, and help out in any way he can. He helps Harry and Arron with stopping express and heavy goods services.

"No, I think it's them being LNER engines that make them whiny," said City of Truro, "Now, if they were Great Western like me...." "HEY!!!" said Max, Bertram and Trooper. "Oh, sorry guys."

City of Truro is a GWR City class. He has four guide wheels, and four driving wheels. Like Bertram, his cylinders are on the inside. He is very fast for his size, and works on local and stopping express services. He has also been claimed to be the first engine to go 100 mph before Flying Scotsman, but the two engines have stopped caring about that debate long ago.

"Wow," said Daniel. He had waited for his friends to come out of the workshop to see them in their full former liveries. "You all look amazing!! I wish I was built the same time you all were."

Daniel is a Prototype Deltic Diesel engine. He often works on express services, but helps with freight every now and then. He is a very kind diesel, unlike many others, who are rude and boastful to the steam engines. Daniel was inspired by the steam engines, and wanted to learn from them. He quickly became friends with them, and earned their trust.

"Well, Daniel," said Flying Scotsman, "If you were built the same time as us, you would have a boiler and not a generator." "Yeah, true, and I like being a diesel. I really don't have anything wrong with Steam engines, but you guys are my friends, and I wouldn't change anything about our friendship."

Soon, Max and Perry were shunting coaches and trucks for the engines. The coaches were of many different liveries. Flying Scotsman's were luxurious Pullman Coaches.

Mallard has special made coaches for his non stop express called the Elizabethan. They looked like blue Pullman coaches. He even had an observation coach at the end of the train. Bertram had to fetch his own coaches, but he didn't mind. His coaches were the same ones he used on the time as top express engine.

Mallard and Flying Scotsman waited at their platforms, when suddenly, a class 40 diesel came swanking in.

He eyed the engines. "Not bad," he said, "At least you're all clean. You know, British Railways should scrap you all, and get engines like me. They have to fiddle with you lot for hours! Not me though, just a touch of oil, a press on the starter, and BOOM! I'm off!" The engines were FURIOUS!!! "Or maybe, BOOM!! you explode, if you have a faulty wiring," laughed Max as he arranged some trucks. The engines then laughed, until Daniel said, "That's enough!!! We all have the same goal here, to be really useful engines. And we all can be, if we just work together." "Whatever," said the class 40, "Um, could you show me to the fuel pump please? I'd like to top off before I head back to the west coast." "Right this way," said Daniel. This was usual for the engines. A new diesel would come, and often boast about how he/she was the future, until Daniel came, and they would praise him for being one of them, and helping pave the way for them. "Why can't all diesels be like Daniel!?" asked Mallard. "I don't know," said Flying Scotsman, "but the railways would be a better place if they were all like Daniel." Just then, the guard's whistle blew, and Flying Scotsman took off. "Well, that's my whistle. FLYING SCOTSMAN, AWAY!!!!" He puffed out of King's Cross with pride. Mallard soon heard his whistle blow, and called to Flying Scotsman, "Race you to Peter-burrow!" "YOU'RE ON!!!" said Flying Scotsman.

Arron backed down on his goods, and he smiled as he watched Mallard and Flying Scotsman race down the line. "He he he, they never learn do they?" he asked Steve. "No they don't, now come on, we got to get these goods to Barrow," said Steve.

Bertram puffed down the line at a nice pace. The passengers didn't mind it, they preferred this to the hustle and bustle of the express. He stopped at a station, and saw some 08 shunters. "Wow," said one, "British Railways must really be scrapping the barrel if they have you in service." Bertram then said, "You know, many engines have said that, but you know what happened to them?" "What?" "Scrap. So, you just watch yourselves, and show respect for your elders. I've seen more engines than I care to count get too big for their buffers and end up on the scrap heap." The 08 shunters said, "Rubbish, we're the way forward from this point on!" Bertram just rolled his eyes, and headed off with his local.

Back at King's Cross, Max and Perry were playing with trucks. "This is the life!!" said Max. Just then, the station master came, and said, "There's a goods train that's needed to go down a branch line, I need one of you to take it." "I can take it," said Max, "Perry just got back from taking one, and may need to rest a bit." "Very well," said the station master, "It's waiting for you on platform 7." Max then puffed off to get his trucks.

At the coal mine, Trooper and Amelia had just arrived on time.

Trooper then collected the needed coal, and puffed off with the night shift workers heading home. He saw a diesel who was taking a goods train, and the diesel said, "Wow, you belong in a museum, not in a mine." "I'll have you know, I've worked these rails long before diesels were even sketches on a drawing board!!! And I'm not gonna let some, shoebox on wheels tell me when my time is up!!!" Trooper the wheeshed steam, and puffed away.

Duchess was puffing down the line, when a horn was heard. "HURRY UP YOU SLOW COACH!!" said a class 37.

"I'm going 102 mph!" said Duchess. The diesel then went on the other line, and over took Duchess. "SCRAP HEAP!!!!" he said. Duchess was furious!!
