𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐑𝐒 𝐋𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐑 — the sun was out and bright, and everyone was lined up by the lake to practice lifesaving.

Sure, you didn't enjoy the fact you had to take part, but it was Wednesday who looked the most disgusted at the thought of saving a life. Her saving someone from the grips of death definitely wasn't something she was looking forward to.

She stuck out like a sore thumb, her swimsuit — which was not surprisingly black —obviously looked very different, compared to every other girl's bright orange lycra swimsuits.

You looked down at your own. It wasn't anything special, since you never really cared for swimming, but you had brought along and navy and white striped swimsuit that your cousin, Charlotte, had picked out for you on your visit to France, matched with your golden earrings that shimmered in the sun.

You miss France, you would much rather be over there; but unfortunately, your mother insisted on you being at camp this summer.

"Life-saving!" Gary cheered, blowing his whistle and interrupting your sulking. Looking up, you could see a gaggle of boys standing across from the girls. You hadn't really paid any attention to the boys so far, but the one standing at the front of the line caught your eye.

He looked a bit miserable, he definitely wasn't enjoying himself that's for sure, but the most noticeable thing about him was his concentrated gaze on the girl in black.

Wednesday.

You don't think she saw him, but even if she did, you probably wouldn't be able to tell through her indomitable expression.

"Now I know we're all top-notch school swimmers, but now we get to show our stuff and earn those certificates!"

Gary jumped up and down excitedly and a murmur of light applause echoed throughout the group.

"Hey, how 'bout our first 'lil pair of lifesaving buddies; Amanda? Wednesday?"

Wednesday stepped forward along with Amanda, who was looking at her up and down with slight disgust.

"Is that your bathing suit?"

"Is that your overbite?"

You stopped paying attention after that, twiddling your earrings absentmindedly.

"Now, one of us gets to be the drowning victim, and the other gets to be our lifesaver!

"I'll be the victim!" Amanda squealed.

"All your life."

"I'm going to be an actress," Amanda said proudly.

"Brava!" Gary claimed, obviously trying to sound impressed. "Now Amanda, jump in, swim out a few yards and start drowning."

With that, Amanda jumped in, soon rising to the surface and flailing around helplessly.

"Help me! Help me! I'm drowning!"

Gary looked over to Wednesday, who was standing there rather unimpressed and nodded towards the water expectantly.

"Help me! I'm dying!"

Amanda then held her breath and sunk under the water, only a few bubbles of air resurfacing.

"I can't swim." Wednesday deadpanned, Gary's face drooping in disappointment.

After a few seconds, Amanda still hadn't reemerged, and it was only when Gary called out your name, panicked, that you reverted your attention back to the activity.

"Um, y/n! Y/n!"

You looked over to the water and instantly knew what was happening.

"Wouldn't you be so kind and help our dear friend Aman-"

But Gary didn't get a chance to finish his sentence, as you had already jumped in to find her.

Amanda returned back to consciousness as soon as her head was pulled out of the water, and she gasped and coughed dramatically, spitting out water and breathing heavily.

"Right well," Gary clapped his hands, "I think thats enough for today, yes?" He was clearly anxious and probobly just wanted to piss off somewhere.

Everyone nodded eagerly, not wanting to be pulled into the same position Amanda was just in, and scurried away to their cabins.

Gary clapped you on the back.

"Well done today y/n." he said shakily, his bright white smile quivering slightly. You watched as he walked off back to his office, now alone of the deck.

Or so you thought.

"That was quite the stunt you pulled today."

You turned around to see Wednesday, still standing in the same position as she was before.

"I could say the same for you." You said, quite taken aback. "You almost let Amanda drown."

"So?"

"So.." you began.

You didn't know what to say in all honesty, you knew that she did not see death as confronting as most, but you were still rather shocked at how she acted.

You sighed, lowering your eyes to the water to look back at your reflection, although it was hard to concentrate on your own when Wednesday's was right there, seemingly looking at your reflection too.

That night was very rainy and cold. You were sitting up in bed watching the droplets run down your window like tears, some of them lightly splashing you as they made their way in through your open window.

It was too dark to see anything tonight, the light of the moon dulled by the storm, so you couldn't tell if anyone else was up at this hour.

Fiddling with the hem of your nightdress, you looked out the woods ahead of you, the tops of the tall pine trees ghosted with the faint light of the moon. The usually bright and cheerful camp had a more chilling atmosphere at night, the rain being the only sound breaking the silence.

You scuffled forwards to clasp the edge of your window, with a bit of a struggle, you were able to push the heavy ledge up far enough for you to slip through and down into the darkness.

Slipped a bit on the wet deck, you quickly ran on your tippy-toes across the damp grass, careful not to step on any snails.

Once you reached the middle of the tree surrounded area, you stopped, lowering the balls of your feet back to earth, and looked up.

The moon above you was nothing but a sliver of light in the sky, barely projecting any light onto earth, even the stars seemed to twinkle a little less brightly.

Your dress was now reflecting some of the moons little light, and the fabric was heavy from the rain as you swished it about.

The slick ground below you helped you spin around as you danced in the rain, your hair slowly becoming separated as the rain slowly wet it.

"What are you doing out here?"

You didn't even need to turn around to see who was talked anyway, but your dancing abruptly stopped as you whipped your head around to see her anyway.

"Dancing." You said as if it was the most obvious thing ever.

"Why." Wednesday did not look pleased at all, like you had specifically disturbed her 6 hours of sleep.

"Because." You said lazily, looking up at the sky again, feeling the rain patter down on your face.

"It's raining."

"So?"

"You'll get wet."

"Oh yeah? What about it?"

Wednesday scowled, she obviously didn't like being talked back to.

"Wednesdayyy" you drawled, holding out your hand. "Live a little"

"Come on, dance with me"
