《All At Once》Her?

She likes me!

She totally, one-hundred percent likes me.

The way she looks down and blushes without meeting my gaze.

The way she unknowingly fiddles with her hands and anything in them.

It's completely clear that she and I are on the same wavelength when it comes to our feelings for one another. We're just to scared to confront it.

I must have looked bat crazy skipping out of her apartment.

Me. A grown man. A professional athlete skipping around parking lots like a child.

It was comical really.

A smile lights up my face throughout the whole drive back to my apartment. One of which I wouldn't be living in for much longer now that I've found a big, beautiful house to move into so I'll have room for the baby.... and hopefully Harper as well.

I open my door to the sight of boxes and clothes scattered everywhere.

Stumbling around the mess I eat, shower, redress and go to bed, excited for the promise of seeing Harper tomorrow morning.

***

I hum to the sound of the radio as I drive to Harper's apartment, my fingers tapping to the beat on the steering wheel.

My heart begins to pound harder in my chest as I turn the corner and see several flashing blue and red lights sitting in the apartment lot.

The sound of my tires skidding against the asphalt is all I can hear as I get out of the car.

Silence consumes me as I look everywhere, trying to find someone to give me the answers I so desperately need.

Pushing the entrance doors open with maybe I little too much force, I find Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins, Harper's next door neighbors, talking to a police officer.

Mrs. Jenkins spots me, my eyes showing worry and confusion, her frail hands pull to her chest, and I feel like I'm drowning.

"Myles honey, I'm so sorry, they're taking her to the hospital now," as she says as a gurney carrying Harper's bloody, pale body passes.

"Go get in the ambulance and we'll follow you there and explain everything," Mrs. Jenkins said with authority.

I nodded weakly, running to catch up to the gurney.

"Are you family?" the medic asked, looking up from Harper's body.

"I'm her husband," I announce not thinking about it.

One day.

He nodded his head and gestured into the ambulance, preparing to lift Harper in.

As soon as I got in, Harper's unconscious body followed right after.

As the medics continue to help her I run my fingers across her forehead that's covered in hair, matted down by blood.

There's no way to tell where the blood is coming from besides the overwhelming amount of gauze being held on her hip.

My heart drops to my stomach when I finally realize the gravity of the situation. It isn't just Harper who's life is on the line, but my unborn child as well.

I lean down and gently kiss her cheek, watching as she stirs slightly.

When we finally reach the hospital the hurry her out leaving me in the back of the ambulance alone.

I drag behind, knowing they won't allow me to be around when they try to help her.

I take a seat in the waiting room, my mind still not completely wrapping around this.

Not long after I've sat down Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins walk in.

I stand up as she approaches, her arms spreading out to pull me into a hug.

I wrap my arms around her small body, searching for even the littlest amount of comfort.

"What happened?" I ask breathlessly as we pull apart.

She nods her head and begins to tell the story, "This morning when we got back from vacation we wanted to check on Harper so we knocked lightly on her door so we wouldn't wake her just in case she happened to be asleep.

"The door opened when we knocked, and although we didn't want to intrude, we had to make sure she was alright. So we walked into her apartment. Nothing seemed off other than the fact that it was unusually quiet.

"I turned and walked into her kitchen and that's when I see it. When I saw her. It was an awful sight. Her eyes were open, she was surrounded by her own blood."

My eyes started to water, the tears beginning to fall harder and harder with each word she says.

"Myles it was the scariest moment of my life."

Mine too.

"I thought she was dead."

My breath caught in my throat. A sob finally escaping my lips. Followed by another, and another. Until the only sound in the room was my frantic breathing and broken sobs.

My body collapses forward as Mrs. Jenkins' arms wrap around me.

I sit like that for only God knows how long, my whole body racking with my cries, the feeling of my phone consistently vibrating in my pocket with calls from the team.

Finally I straighten up.

"So what happened to her?" I ask, the sound of my own voice making me want to begin crying once more.

"The paramedics said that it looked like a stab wound, he said that she was probably lying there for a good twelve hours or more," Mr. Jenkins repeats the words back to me.

Thoughts swirled in my mind.

Thoughts of Harper.

Thoughts of my baby.

Of what's going to happen.

I sit up straight, pulling at my hair in frustration as I remember that I still need to call her parents.

***

About an hour later Fiona, Reuben, Logan, and I were sitting in the waiting room. Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins had to leave, although they were very reluctant and felt extremely bad about it.

We all look up at the sound of the waiting room doors opening.

"Harper Riley's family?"

At that we all stood up.

"Is she okay?" Fiona asked worriedly.

The doctor nods his head with a small smile, "She lost a lot of blood, her organs were slowly starting to shut down and her brain was lacking a severe amount of oxygen. But with a blood transfusion and a few jolts of electricity to get her blood circulating once more she's doing a lot better."

We all let out a relieved sigh.

"In fact she's awake if you want to se-"

Before he had finished his sentence I was sprinting towards Harper's room, definitely putting my running-back speed to its best use yet.

Once I'm there I come to an abrupt stop in the doorway.

Our eyes connect and I can feel another wave of tears hit me.

I walk over to her as fast as I can, and lean down to gently pull her into my embrace, careful not to hurt her.

"Miss me?" she chuckles softly. Her voice raspier than usual.

"You have no idea."

I lean my forehead against hers, looking straight into her eyes.

"How is our little one?" I ask as I move my hand down to her stomach.

"The doctor said that there was no harm to the baby, and that I was brought in just in time to prevent any possible neuro-damage to her," she said with a wide smile.

Good there's nothing wrong with her-

"Her?" I ask eyes wide.

She nods her head in excitement, "A little girl."

My little family.
