《It's just me and you》Chapter 7- Coffee

The agonizing sound of my alarm brings me out of my peaceful sleeping. I roll over to my nightstand and slam my hand down to stop it from continuing. I lay on my back, staring at the ceiling.

It's been about 2 weeks since my fathers business party and I've been incredibly busy, more than I'd like. Preseason soccer, that's why. I tried out for soccer in high school as a joke but realized that I had a real talent for it. I was the best player in the county with top scoring points. what can I say, I'm the best. Soccer is basically what got me into Brown University, that and my essay about my mother . . . anyways soccer has kept me real busy lately and I have no choice but to go because A- It's my last year and B- I'm the team captain.

my phones ringtone goes off taking me from my thoughts. I look over and see it's a message from Cameron. It's a selfie of him at the beach with a sombrero and a coconut.

He's been on vacation with "McHottie" the guy from the bar the other night. Which I think is a little crazy given the fact that they just met but if Cams happy so am I. He occasionally sends me selfies to let me know he's okay and hasn't been murdered.

I text back.

He quickly replies with a picture of Oscar (McHottie) rubbing sunscreen on his back.

I scoff and stand up walking to my curtains, opening them. I don't have a shirt on...or pants. Fuck it. I put the camera to my face and stick out my middle finger. Looks good enough, I hit send.

I grab my robe and walk out my room, I head downstairs to my kitchen. I'm going to make myself a quick bagel. Can't play soccer on an empty stomach.

As I'm spreading cream cheese on my bagel my phone starts ringing. It's Cameron. Hopefully he's not dead.

"What's up, are you dead?" I ask.

"Have you been working out?" He responds eagerly.

I scoff "I thought I told you I'm playing soccer"

"Oh shit, I forgot. God bless soccer" he says in awe.

I laugh. "And why is that?"

"Girl- have you seen yourself?" He says almost angrily.

I laugh "Yes everyday actually, that's why I'm always happy" I say sarcastically.

He laughs.

Oscar jumps in "Don't take my man y/n" He says teasingly in his Spanish accent.

I laugh "He was mine first"

Oscar gasps "You are very sexy y/n, if I wasn't gay I'd totally go for you" Oscar says teasingly.

I laugh and see Cam playfully slap Oscar, which makes me laugh more.

"Well y/n has a part that you'd really like" Cam says to Oscar.

I quickly jump in "Okay, that was fun. Talk to you later" I say jokingly.

"What is it?" Oscar asks Cam confused.

Cam looks at me for permission and I nod in approval.

"I really do have to go Cam, soccer remember? Stay safe the both of you" I say happily.

Cam smiles and they both wave and say goodbye in unison which was weird but surprisingly adorable.

I continue making my bagel and squish it down the way I like it. I look at my phone and my eyes almost burst out of my skull. I'm already 5 minutes late. I run upstairs and pack my soccer bag with cleats, shin guards, and a water bottle. I throw on a hoodie and some black running shorts and head downstairs.

I feel like running so I won't take my car. I know I'm going to be at least 30 minutes late and coach is going to make me run laps but she has a soft spot for me so I'm sure I'll get out of that.

I walk out my penthouse and into an elevator. When the elevator finally made its last stop I quickly ran out the lobby saying good morning and goodby to the whole lobby and the doorman.

I arrive to the field and see girls warming up. Oh I'm definitely getting yelled at.

"Y/l/n you're late!" My coach says angrily.

I'm very out of breathe and I bend down trying to catch it.

"Yeah, my bad" I say in between breaths.

She scoffs, shakes her head, and walks over to me.

"Y/n you know damn straight you can't be late, you're the team captain for crying out loud" she whisper yells so the other girls don't hear.

"You're setting a bad example for your teammates, they're going to think being late is okay, when it's not" she says sternly.

I somewhat caught my breathe so I stand back up properly. I look at her and smile "Did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed Coach Hardy?" I say teasingly trying to lighten the mood.

If looks could kill, I'd be so dead right now. Her brown eyes are definitely staring at my soul right now.

I clear my throat "I'm sorry coach, it won't happen again and I'll make sure those girls don't come late." I say.

"It better not happen again." She says pointing a finger at me.

I smile and sit on the bench getting ready to put my cleats on. All of a sudden my bag is grabbed and thrown across the field. I stare up at my coach in shock.

She laughs proudly "No soccer for you today miss, Laps Now!"

I look at her frozen in disbelief. In the corner of my eyes I see the girls laughing.

Coach leans closer to my ear to whisper "if you don't get off you're godamn ass, I will make sure you never touch a ball again" she says.

I quickly spring up. "Yes m'am!" I say while giving her a military salute and she rolls her eyes. As I run over to the track I glance and see most of the girls checking me out so I internally smirk.

After 16 excruciating laps Coach calls me over. I'm a sweating mess right now. I don't even know why I decided to run in a hoodie. I walk over to her and can't take the heat anymore so I take off my hoodie and my undershirt rises a little causing a few girls to gasp. What can I say?

I'm a charmer.

I can feel all eyes on me now and it's getting a bit awkward. As if on cue coach clears her throat.

"Great practice today ladies, that's it. I expect better tomorrow out of all of you" she says while glancing at me making some girls giggle.

Everyone disperses into their own direction and I stay behind.

"Coach how long did I run for?" I ask eagerly.

She looks at her watch "about 2 and a half hours" she says as if it was nothing.

Wow, no wonder I feel like all the energy was sucked out of me. I didn't even eat my bagel now that I'm thinking about it.

"Hey, go home, get some rest. Come back tomorrow on time and maybe I won't make you run more laps" she says while patting my shoulder and winking at me.

I smile "I'll think about it" I say teasingly at her. She rolls her eyes and waves me off.

I walk over to the bench and pick up my bag while taking my water out. After drinking some I put it back inside. I look at the time and see that it's still pretty early so I'll probably go home take a shower and go out to get some coffee. That will give me my energy back.

——————

After taking a shower and getting ready I grab my wallet and my keys and head out.

Once I make it to my car I play some music. "Under Pressure" by Queen and David Bowie to be exact. My dad use to play this song for me on long car drives.

As I arrive the city I see my favorite coffee shop and lucky for me I see a nice parking spot. I park and head inside. As I walk inside a familiar figure takes my attention with her. Scarlett. She's sitting at a table alone with a messy bun and glasses. It looks like she's working because her computer is open and there's papers scattered on her table.

"Can I get you anything?" The coffee barista asks awkwardly.

Oh he definitely just saw me gawking at Scarlett, how embarrassing.

I clear my throat "yeah, can I get two medium black coffee's please?" I say.

"Can I get a name?" He asks.

I can make this really interesting right now. Come on y/n do it. Okay I'll do it. "Scarlett, my names Scarlett" I say nervously.

He nods and I hand him my credit card. He looks at in awe. I have a platinum credit card so what. He hands it back to me and I smile. Now back to my plan.

I walk over to Scarlett and see her biting her lip in concentration. Those papers must really be interesting. Here goes everything.

I pull up a chair and sit on the opposite side of her.

She looks up and her face reads utter shock.

"Need any help?" I ask teasingly.

She looks around to see if anyone is watching.

"What the hell are you doing here?" She says in a whisper shout.

"Relax, I'm not stalking you if that's what you think" I say confidently.

She rubs her temples and sits up. "I don't need your help." She says sternly.

I scoff and grab one of her papers. She try's reaching for it but I gently swat her hand.

I skim over it "you're reading excerpts from lord of the flies?" I ask and she grabs the paper out of my hands.

"Not that it's any of your business" she says composing her papers in a stack.

"It may not be but I know a thing or two about it" I say teasingly.

She raises a brow.

"Order for Scarlett!" The barista calls out.

Her face shifts into a confused one. She gets up and walks over to the barista and he points at me which causes her to send me a death glare so I just smile and wave at the both of them. I see her grab both coffee's and walks over to the table.

"Are you serious?" She asks annoyed as she sits down and places the coffees in front of me.

"Wow Scarlett, you bought me coffee?" I ask teasingly.

She rolls her eyes "You wish" she says.

I laugh "yeah, I do. Anyways ones for you. I saw you working and didn't see any coffee, I'm sure you could use some." I say while moving one of the coffee's closer to her.

I look up and see her face into an expression I'm not totally familiar with. It's like she's happy? or she's surprised someone would do something for her. I'm not quite sure but as fast as it arrived it's now gone and her bitter expression is back. Yay.

"You didn't need to. Thank You" she says.

I smile "so can you tell me why you're reading lord of the flies? I read that when I was like 10" I say.

She furrows her brow "This is no book for a 10 year old. Your parents let you read It?" She asks curiously.

No. My parents didn't let me read that book. My therapist read it to me to try and explain why my mom was the way she was. I never liked the book.

I feel a warm pressure on my hand and I look down and see her hand over mine. I look up and see her giving me a comforting glare.

I clear my throat and move my hand. She looks almost sad that she's not touching me anymore. Dammit I'm an idiot as always. Fix it y/n.

"It was a school project" I lie.

She furrows her brows "really? This is more of a college book" she says.

"I agree." I say softly.

She laughs

"So what's a woman like you doing alone in a coffee shop? Hows your Collin?" I say and her expression shifts to a hurt one but she quickly composed herself.

"We'll I'm just getting some last minute work down and he's busy doing actual work" she says and emphasized the "actual" part. Did he tell her his job was an actual job compared to hers? What an ass.

"Well as far as I can see you're doing "actual" work, I mean look at all of this" I say gesturing to all her papers.

She smiles softly at me, almost in admiration. No that's crazy what am I thinking.

"If you want I can tell my father to give him less work hours so he can be with you" I ask.

"No" she responds almost a little too quickly raising my concerns.

"Scarlett is he hurting you?" I ask nervously.

"No, god no. It's just-" she pauses and looks at me. It's like she's making sure If I'm trustworthy. I am Scarlett I am.

I softly smile "I'm listening" I reassure her.

She smiles. "It's just that he completely invalidates all my work and when I don't give him a thumbs up on his accomplishments then he gets mad and we end up fighting and I'm honestly tired of it" she says and buried her head in her hands.

I can't believe I'm about to do what I'm about to do. Fuck me.

"Scarlett I think you need to talk to him. Tell him how you feel and how his actions affect you" I say.

She looks up and continues listening.

"I've never really been in a relationship but I know that a key factor is communication and honesty. I think that's what the both of you need. Don't just suffer in silence, tell him. Im sure there's some good to come out of it" I say.

I look into her eyes and see a sparkle in them and her lips are curved into a small smile.

"Thank you. I needed that" she says sincerely.

"Of course, anytime." I say. I look at my phone and see that it's kind of late. I haven't eaten and I'm sure she hasn't either. Let's go y/n, full confidence mode right now.

"Want to go get dinner with me?" I ask.

She looks surprised that I asked but then she looks at me suspiciously.

"Relax. Dinner as friends. I have a car. Let's go" I say demandingly. Hopefully she doesn't take that the wrong way.

I get up and she still doesn't budge.

I scoff "I'll pay" I say teasingly.

"Deal" she says happily.
