The windows of your chevey are rolled down and you're driving down the road deep in Texas. You're humming along to some music adusting your glasses. You're driving out here to meet up with some old family friends the Sawyers. You don't remember much of them but your family says that you used to hang out all the time.
Just as you pull up to the gas station your car runs out of gas. You sigh in relief and get out. You start feeling sluggish and walk inside. The smell of cigarettes and cooking meat filling the air.
"Hello?" You say pushing your hair out of your face. "I'm looking for a Drayton Sawyer!" You say walking around the old building. Soon a man in a brown shirt and pants walks out with an annoyed look on his face.
"Can I help you?" He asks.
"Yeah I'm looking for a Drayton Sawyer." You say.
"Well I'm him."
"Oh hi I'm y/n l/n. My parents said you're family friends of ours. I hope they told you I'm coming for a visit." Dreyton smiles and holds out his hand for you to shake. You take it.
"Oh yes y/n. I remember you when you were a baby. You and Bubba played so much together. Here why don't I take you back to the house." This entire time you've grown weaker and weaker.
"Yeah um I just need to sit down this um heat is getting to me." You say siting on a near by bench. Drayton nods and goes to the back.
"Let me just get my truck!" While he's gone you close your eyes and pass out from the heat. Hours went by and you finally wake up. You're in a small bedroom in an unfamilar house. You sit up in the bed and look around. There's a small window, a dresser. a vanity and mirror, a night stand and a closet. The blanket you're under is old and word down just like the lumpy mattress. You get out of the bed an open the door looking into a hallway.

"Hello?" You say looking for some stairs. "Drayton? Where am I?" You find the stairs and walk down them. You enter a dining room area and notice a tall muscular man in the kitchen. "Hello?" You say startling the man.
"Oh I'm sorry I'm y/n l/n. I don't know where I am." You notice the man is wearing a dirty leathery mask. sewn together with a thick black string. The man approaches you. "Do you know where Drayton is?" You ask. The man shakes his head. "Is this his house?" He nods. "Are you mute? Or is something wrong?" The man grunts and the front door behind you opens.
"Oh y/n you're awake. You must've passed out from the uh heat. I see you've said hi to Bubba." Drayton says. Memory start flowing as you remember playing with a boy around your age out in the middle of nowhere. You turn back to Bubba who's standing there. "Don't just stand there boy get to work on dinner!" Drayton shouts and Bubba. He goes back to the kitchen and gets to work.
"Um is it just the two of you?" You ask turning back to Drayton.
"Oh no uh there's also Chop top, grandpa and uh Nubbins. Those two coon shits are uh out somewhere causing trouble. Here I'll uh get you something to drink go have a seat in the dining room." Drayton walks off and you go sit at the table. You notice what appears to be a corpse in a wheelchair sitting with you. You scream and quickly stand up. Drayton quickly runs back in holding a bottle of coke.
" What going on in here?" He ask. You point to the man in the wheelchair and Drayton sighs.
"Oh that's just grandpa. He's uh 122 years old the old fellow." He hands you the drink and you take it sitting back down at the table.

Author's Thoughts: What is litRPG (From wikipedia) - LitRPG, short for Literary Role Playing Game, is a literary genre combining the conventions of MMORPGs with science-fiction fantasy novels.[1] LitRPG is a literary genre where games or game-like challenges form an essential part of the story. A LitRPG work simultaneously narrates the story of characters inside and outside of the game-world. At least some of the characters in a LitRPG novel therefore understand that they are playing a game: they are 'meta-aware'. So, while Tolkien's Lord of the Rings is a fantasy novel, a book about people creating avatars and interacting in a Lord of the Rings MMORPG would be a LitRPG novel. Why do I read them? You know, I am not too sure. I love MMOs. I played them, quit them, joined up and repeated the cycle. They are fun! They are a massive waste of time but so are most games. Do I want to read about someone else playing them? Sort of?The advent of VR and the possibility of VR someday becoming so immersive that you can't tell them from reality sets the imagination on fire. What if this could be life? But most stories fall short. At the end of the day the protagonist hangs up his VR helmet and goes to have dinner with his mom and dad or other family and it becomes meaningless. It's like the story that ends because the main character woke up and nothing you read matters. There have been some books that explore the concept of the intersection of reality and total immersion VR. Enders Game is a classic. There were a few others that escape me but they exist, however, the cross between the game and reality is weak.So what if the game was real? The technology needed for total immersion VR is so advanced that by the time we reach that goal technology should have naturally evolved to include several items. You must have direct neural input. You simply can't have a total immersion (all senses and perfect presence) experience without this basic prerequisite. If you have direct neural access, you can probably do neat things like feed knowledge and skills directly to that person. You can undoubtedly do many horrible things as well. Muscles are controlled by the brain. If you control the brain why would you let the body just sit there and rot? A person that sits unmoving for 24 hours a day will have their body whither away just like a coma patient. However, if you control the brain you could control the muscles. On a basic level, this would be isometric impulses, working muscle group against muscle group to avoid atrophy. Taken to its logical conclusion you would be able to gain muscle mass and program muscle memory. The flip side is that you could remote control their body... but let's not go there. So what would people do if it were real? Well, they would probably limit and regulate it since the drawbacks are very obvious. Even if you look at the basic aspects of this you can see some negative possibilities. Look at the Sword Art Online anime. Personally, I think they missed the boat by putting a bomb in the VR helmet. Do you really need a bomb when you have direct access to the brain? So what kind of events would you need to have a situation where the obvious drawbacks haven't been explored? Maybe a society where the advancement of technology has so far outstripped the explorations of its applications that ignorance was truly bliss? Okay, so I had to put in an alien invasion to kickstart the premise, but that was just one of the possibilities.
