《Finding Emma》Chapter 5

"It's time to go to dinner," I say to Tris. We've spent the past hour talking to Emma and making sure she feels comfortable. Emma is shy. She still is a little wary around Tris. Given that she has only met Tris about an hour and a half ago, I'm not too surprised.

-

-

"We're going to go eat some food, okay?" Tris asks as I pick Emma up. I know she can walk, but it's easier to carry her because we can get to the dining hall faster. I pick up the sippy cup on the nightstand and give it to Emma. She holds it, noticing it is empty.

-

-

"Do you see how malnourished she is?" I ask Tris, lifting up Emma's tank top to reveal her swollen stomach.

-

-

"We need to feed her soon," Tris says. "That's not healthy at all. I hope she'll be alright."

-

-

"Me too," I say. We close the gate to our room and walk to the dining hall.

-

-

Emma looks at the food, her eyes widening. She looks back up at me.

-

-

"Do you want to eat?" I ask her. She nods, her eyes widening. It's as if she's never seen this much food in her life.

-

-

"What do you want to eat?" I ask, grabbing a plate. Tris grabs two; one for her and one for Emma. I would have grabbed the second one but my other arm is full as I'm carrying Emma.

-

-

She points to a piece of bread and Tris picks it up. "We need to give her nutrients too," I say, and Tris picks up a hamburger.

-

-

"What else?" Tris asks. Emma points her tiny finger towards carrots and Tris puts them on the plate.

-

-

"How about some cake?" I ask, nodding my head to the chocolate cake they have here. She stares at it with her eyes wide.

-

-

"Have you had it before?" Tris asks, looking into Emma's sweet hazel eyes. Emma looks at me oddly. She doesn't remember, of course.

-

-

"Well, she's going to try it," I propose, and Tris puts a small bit onto Emma's plate. I set Emma down for a second and fill her sippy cup up with water. I set it on her plate and pick her back up again.

-

-

"Ready?" I ask after Tris makes her plate. We find a table and sit down.

-

-

I sit Emma next to me. Her tiny feet dangle and her eyes are barely above the table.

-

-

"Do they have some kind of tall chair?" Tris asks, looking around. She doesn't see any.

-

-

"Emma, do you want to stand?" I ask her. She nods and I lift her up, so that she's standing on the bench. I put her hair back into a ponytail after Tris sets her plate in front of her.

-

-

"Do you think she can eat a full hamburger by herself?" Tris asks, as Emma touches the hamburger bun cautiously. I shake my head no, and take a knife to cut it up into little pieces.

-

-

The second the hamburger is cut up, Emma picks up a piece and puts it in her mouth. Her saliva stays on her fingers and she looks at the hamburger on her plate, her eyes widening yet again. She grabs another piece of hamburger and eats it.

-

-

"Somebody's hungry," Tris laughs, picking up her hamburger.

Once Emma is finished eating her hamburger and some of her carrots, I ask her if she wants to eat the cake. She looks at it oddly.

-

-

I spoon a little bit up and put it into her mouth. She puts her hands to her face and a little smile forms. This is the second time she's smiled; she hasn't smiled since we were back in the room playing together.

-

-

"I think somebody likes chocolate cake just as much as you do," Tris smirks at me. I roll my eyes. Emma finishes the small spoonful of cake Tris put on her plate quickly. She looks at her plate, noticing there's no cake left, and then looks around. She studies my plate, and then pushes her hands into my cake.

-

-

"Hey, not my cake!" I say, pulling her hands out of it. She looks up at me and starts to whimper, her eyes welling.

-

-

"It's okay, Emma," I say, immediately feeling bad. I grab the blueberry muffin from my plate and give it to her. "Do you want this?"

-

-

She takes the muffin from my hand angrily. "NO!" She screams, chucking it across the room.

-

-

Tris' eyes widen. "Woah," she says. "Somebody DOES love cake just as much as you."

-

-

"Fine," I say, rolling my eyes. I sit her on my lap in front of my cake. "You can have some of my cake."

-

-

Emma squeals and pushes her hands into the cake.

-

-

"No," I start. "Emma, we're going to use a fork-"

-

-

"Four," Tris says quietly. "Let her eat it with her hands. She looks the happiest I've seen right now. And she's gone through a lot, so we want to keep her happy."

-

-

I look down at Emma. She's eating the cake with her hands, a grin on her face. I smile.

-

-

"You must really care about her," Tris. "You let her eat your cake. That's a first. You've never let me have a piece of your cake."

-

-

I roll my eyes and smile. "Well, we didn't want a tantrum, did we?"

-

-

Emma finishes my cake happily. I take my napkin and wipe her hands carefully.

-

-

"We need to go," I tell her as we stand up. Tris and I are done eating anyway.

-

-

Emma starts to fuss in my arms and I stand up. "Are you still hungry?" I ask. She shakes her head no, but points at the food.

-

-

"I think she doesn't want to leave the food, because she hasn't seen that much in her life. She's probably worried she'll starve again," Tris says quietly.

-

-

My heart breaks for the little girl resting on my hip, whimpering because she's worried she won't have enough to eat. I pull her closer to me, rubbing her back.

-

-

"Do you want me to bring some food back to the dorms?" I ask her. She looks up at me, her eyes glistening, and nods. I pick up a loaf of bread from the table and stuff it in my arm so no one can see.

-

-

"Let's go," I say to Tris.
