《Finding Emma》Chapter 4

I bounce the little girl on my bottom bunk, holding her under her armpits. She smiles at me, clapping her hands together. It's the first true smile I've seen from her.
-
-
I bounce her up and down again, and she laughs, her hair flying behind her shoulders. I smile. "You like that?" I ask.
-
-
She starts to become a little uncomfortable after awhile, pointing towards her throat. I sit her in my lap.
-
-
"Are you thirsty?" I ask. "Do you want some water?" She nods quietly.
-
-
I set her next to me, get off the bed and open the small bag she received. I find a yellow sippy cup with grips on it. "I have some water in my water bottle," I explain to her, reaching from under the nightstand and pulling out my water bottle. I pour some water into her sippy cup and turn to face her.
-
-
The little girl grabs the sippy cup and presses her lips against the mouth, gulping down the water. She stares at me, and I smile at her.
-
-
She downs the cup of water and then holds the cup out to me. "Alright, that's enough for now. We're going to dinner soon," I say, taking the cup and setting it onto the nightstand. "We can have some more later."
-
-
I lift the girl up next to me and start to bounce her up and down. She starts to laugh again, stretching her arms out.
-
-
Tris walks into the room right then, gawking at me.
-
-
"How was your time with David?" I ask, looking at her. I set the little girl into my lap.
-
-
"What's going on here?" She asks. "All of the sudden I come back and you have a small child in our room. What's all of this toddler stuff doing here? The cot?"

"I went on a mission today," I explain. "I had to capture children. I found this one crying with her parents lying dead on the ground. It was horrible. We managed to fix her up, inoculate her, and here she is. She developed some kind of emotional attachment to me. So, David and Nita proposed that she stay in our room for a couple of weeks."
-
-
"Dada," the little girl says, pushing her hand onto my face again.
-
-
"I'm not your dada," I repeat. I look at Tris as the little girl stands in between us. "A soldier gave her a little bit of memory serum, and her memories are now confused. She thinks I'm her father."
-
-
Tris sits on the bed next to us and looks at the little girl. "Hi," she says with a smile. The girl looks at her warily, then looks back at me. She toddles into my lap and hugs my chest, shying away from Tris.
-
-
"It's okay," I whisper quietly to her. "This is my girlfriend. Her name is Tris. Can you say hi?"
-
-
The little girl looks shyly at Tris. "Hi," she whispers.
-
-
"So far she knows 'Dada' and 'hi'," I explain to Tris.
-
-
"What's her name?" Tris asks me with a smile.
-
-
"Actually, I don't know," I reply. I pull the little girl back from my chest and look into her eyes. "Can you tell me your name?" I ask.
-
-
She looks at me blankly and doesn't answer.
-
-
"I don't know," I shrug. "Either she doesn't remember it, or she can't say it."
-
-
"You should give her a name," Tris grins at me.

-
"I don't know what to call her," I shrug.
-
-
"I have a suggestion. But, it's your choice, so you don't have to do it," Tris says. "Maybe Natalie? I just learned that my mother came from here, the fringe. She got kidnapped and saved by David. She was sent into the city, and then had me. I don't know, I guess this situation sort of reminded me of it."
-
-
I look at the little girl and try to imagine her with the name Natalie. I just can't. She doesn't look like Natalie Prior anyway; she has light blonde hair instead of brown and her facial features are just different. "It's a nice thought, but I can't see her as a Natalie."
-
-
I study the little girl's face some more, as she plays with her hands. She sort of resembles Tris with her light blonde hair. However, she has hazel colored eyes, which remind me of my mother's.
-
-
"I know what to name her," I say quietly.
-
-
"What?" Tris asks.
-
-
"Emma," I say.
-
-
"Why Emma?"
-
-
"When my mother left Abnegation, she faked her death. I didn't know this until I was in Dauntless," I explain quietly. "A couple months before she left, when I was about six, she told my father and I that she was pregnant. She discovered that it was a girl. My mother wanted to name her Emma. She explained to my father that she wanted to name her this because Emma was an Abnegation name, but I knew the truth. Emma meant whole, and Evelyn had always wanted a daughter. I was excited to get a sibling, too. I was nervous for the baby, though, because I didn't want her to be abused by Marcus. But it meant I wouldn't be alone. One morning, I woke up to find my father and a group of his friends sitting in the living room sadly. He explained to me that my mother had died in childbirth, giving a miscarriage to the little sibling I was so excited for. I was devastated. Many years later, when I was in Dauntless, she gave me a note. I went to meet her, and I found out that the child was made up."
-
-
"Four," Tris says, quietly. "I'm so sorry. My father never told me that Evelyn was carrying another baby when she left. He just said she died as a fluke accident."
-
-
"I want to name her Emma because that's what my supposed sister's name would have been," I say. "I just feel like I owe it to that baby- even though it never really existed. She sort of looks like an Emma, too," I say. I study the little girl's features again, as she places her hands on my cheeks and studies my face as well.
-
-
"Emma," Tris says, looking at her as well. "I think it fits perfectly."
-
-
"Emma, can you say hi?" I ask, looking into the little girl's eyes. "Can I call you Emma?"
--
"Hi," she says to me.
-
-
"Emma," I say to Tris, with a smile.
