《Lose Myself》Chapter Seven: Discovery

I watched the grey clouds forming from the warm air escaping my nostrils as I adjusted the gloves I was wearing, it had been an honestly brilliant idea to do this now I thought sarcastically as I started my shiny black Ducati. It was around two-thirty pm and the plane had been ready for my departure for about half an hour now, it had just taken a long time to convince my mother that I wasn't doing another disappearing act like last time only to end up on the tabloids cutting the ribbon to a tall shiny glass tower.

I shook my head at the thought as I revved the engine and rode to the airport, I was once again bombarded by the paparazzi but didn't pay it any mind. Alessandro was waiting for me there with transport to return my bike back home, I thanked him as I handed him the keys to the bike and headed to entry for my flight. I hadn't brought any bags with me so the process was pretty much non-existent allowing me to be on the plane and taking off in less that ten minutes.

The ride had been short, there was no stops and an open landing space once we'd arrived, though I knew I should've left earlier when I saw that it was around six in the evening. I could've gone over the papers on the damn plane considering how long it just took, that would've been more than enough time to come up with the mediocre theory I'd devised lying around in my room back home.

I pinched the bridge of my nose as the flight attendant informed me that I was free to exit the plane and that the paparazzi had been warned off the landing. I thanked her with a nod and descended the stairs of the plane adjusting my coat once I'd reached the ground. I walked into the airport and out the exit on the other side. Rolling my eyes I pulled out my phone and searched for an uber only to find out they didn't have uber available in this country. I almost groaned aloud but kept to myself as I dialled for a taxi instead, not until I'd searched up the number on google of course.

I was lucky I'd opted for the international mobile plan. Or I'd be f-cked.

The taxi arrived just minutes later and luckily enough this city was nothing like New York or that taxi would've been snatched from right under me at the pace I was going. I climbed in and asked to be dropped just a couple blocks from the street I was looking for, I didn't want to raise any suspicions about where I was going.

"Uh that street doesn't come up here mate." I winced at the terrible accent, not german at all.

"Drop me in that direction." I pointed towards the power tower, that was where the building had come up when I'd searched it on Google Maps. This whole thing - I was starting to realise - was super unprofessional. I said 'super' so it must be. The guy began driving and didn't ask questions when I paid him more than he needed and got out just at the edge of town. I waited for his car to disappear down the road - so not to raise suspicion - and started walking out into the field.

Relief flooded my system as I recognised the name of the street I was looking for on an old rusting sign post to my left, I followed the dirt path glad I hadn't completely and thoroughly wasted my time. It was now around seven or eight and I was still walking this damn field. A building with at least five floors and only a few lights switched on came into view behind a line of trees and I thanked god for getting me there, any longer and I would've called for a helicopter. I'd surely be shot down by security, getting this address wasn't meant to be easy.

I went up the front and typed in the code meant for the entrance from the text Leo had sent me moments after our conversation, I walked to the elevator and pressed for the fourth floor then entering the pin required. I hadn't come unarmed so whatever waited for me on the other side of the sliding doors I could handle. Surprisingly the interior of the building was sleek and modern whereas the exterior was rusting, old and misleading - which I took to be intended, for cover or something.

It had seriously been too long since I went out on some kind of mission, I'd forgotten all the spy slang.

I was calling it 'spy slang.'

After the doors opened I stepped out looking both ways before making my way to the hallway to my left, I walked a bit before realising I'd left a person sitting there staring. I'd become rusty. I returned and smiled when I saw it was a woman, her eyes were wide and she had one hand slowly reaching to the phone. "Whoa." I held my hands out slowly stepping towards her then guiding her hand down to her side before cocking one brow as if to say 'seriously?'

"Y-you're not meant to be in here." she trembled. God why did they have such a wuss at the front desk?

"I know that." I smirked leaning against the ledge and looking down at her, she was pretty average with brown and eyes. Not that brown hair and eyes weren't attractive - they could be - her brown hair and eyes just weren't particularly special in any way. "I actually don't need to go any further than right here. I'm looking for someone and I was hoping you could help me out." I smiled, her eyes went wide.

Did she think I was attractive?

"I-I'm s-sorry, I can't g-give out any information about employees in this - uh - facility."

"You don't think I know that?" I snorted in what I hoped was a friendly manner, "I'm just going to cut the crap, I'm looking for a woman named Schwarzer Regen. Can you help me with that?"

"Excuse me?"

"Schwarzer Regen."

"I heard you."

"Doesn't sound like it. Can you help me."

"I - uh - don't know -"

"I think its your turn to cut the crap. Just pull it up on your, " I grimaced as my finger came off with dust after tapping the computer, "machine here." I finished slowly.

She rolled her eyes typing something in the computer, "You must know her then. I'll go see something important in the file room, just," she looked down at the computer quickly then back to me and again doing the same thing, "don't touch the computer." She said looking at the computer suggestively before looking back to me to see if I understood what she was getting at. I wasn't dense so I raised my brows and replied with an assured 'pinky promise'. Before she exited through a door that revealed a bunch of boxes and paper piled everywhere which I guess was the file place she was talking about.

Some kinda loophole she was pulling and just to help me. Weird.

I grabbed the counter and lifted myself up sliding over to the other side and sitting in her twirly office chair. I scrolled around then felt proud as I located the folder marked [X] FILES: SCHWARZER REGEN. I plugged in the drive I'd brought with me and copied the files onto it, whilst waiting curiosity got the better of me. Why not look through some pictures or something to give the security cameras the idea that I didn't steal any files - no, of course not - I went through some documents and pictures and that was enough for me. I'd remember the information I found because I was 'cocky' like that.

I figured the German Organisation wasn't too big on having their documents stolen from right under them, it was better to play it off like it never happened rather than to just start sh-t.

I was ecstatic when I found video files, each were labelled with numbers and I figured these were the experiments. I clicked a random one and assumed it was long enough to pass time whilst the files downloaded. The video began with an empty room that had two titled boards armoured with metal braces on them. I recognised the device all too well. A voice sounded in the background of the recording, "Weiser Adler!" which I figured was the first experiment being called. The receptionist was dragged into the frame by a single man and strapped to the board, what a twist. Then the voice called out, "Schwarzer Regen!" I mentally rolled my eyes as the the computer made a sound signalling the files had downloaded but I ejected the drive anyways storing it safely in my pocket. Then pressed play.

My eyes went wide as a blonde was carried in by two extremely buff men, both much more muscly than the ones carrying experiment number one. Schwarzer Regen kept her head down as she was strapped to the board, she muttered under her breath about her 'actually having a name' - which even I barely heard - causing the guard to laugh. He whispered in her ear before walking out the door to the side, then these men in white coats - another sight I was all too familiar with - walked into the frame holding needles containing some kind of blue serum.

The receptionist start struggling shouting 'no' constantly as they injected her with the serum, Regen kept her head down obviously aware that the same thing was about to happen to her. I moved the mouse a little so I could see the number the video had been labelled at the bar up the top, 107. If she'd told someone this was the hundredth time she'd been through this, it would be so accurate.

The men then moved to Regen and began injecting both of her arms with the same serum, though they appeared to inject a little bit more than they did with number one, maybe it was because Regen had developed a slight immunity to the serum. I watched as her hands balled into fists, doesn't like needles I made a mental note. The men left leaving the screen with just the two women, heads bowed waiting for the serum to take effect. What an epic waste it would be if this was one of those boring videos where nothing happened and the men returned to the frame, took notes and labeled the experiment as failed.

I felt a slight relief as number one started screaming, shaking her head and trying to move her restricted limbs. She spoke german so quickly and in such a deranged manner I was sure I almost understood, I didn't know any german but it felt as if she was saying 'my head is exploding' because she kept saying the same damn thing over and over and that was what my mind had come up with.

My heart leapt into my throat as Schwarzer Regen looked up squinting her eyes in pain.

There was no way.

Confirmation was brutal as her eyes opened revealing those clear blue irises.

I shook my head slowly. I paused the clip, it cleared the image some more and I stood abruptly.

"I think thats enough." the receptionist said walking up from behind me and closing the window. I hadn't even realised she had been standing there. "You know her don't you?"

"I uh -"

"Here," she said handing me a file, "Your lucky they haven't thrown this out yet."

"Thank you."
