《Lose Myself》Chapter Six: Family Day

I groaned as the curtains were pulled apart allowing the sunlight to cast itself upon my bed, turning around so not to be blinded by the rays of the burning heat I questioned myself on my brilliant positioning of the bed. I couldn't have put on the wall across so that when you opened the windows it would cover just the bottom half of the bed? I had to have it over the top half. Though my family surely loved it, a full-proof way to wake me up without making physical contact.

"C'mon Dominic. Wake up, you know I don't like touching you in the morning." Claire whined. I groaned in response. "Your always so groggy and your probably sticky too."

I frowned then turned to face her cracking my eyes open, "Am not."

"Ugh, get up." she glared at me before walking towards the door, "We're having breakfast in ten minutes."

After the door shut and I listened to her receding footsteps, I sat up looking over to the vanity that had the files my father had given me last night just sitting there. I'd briefly gone through them and found a series of assassinations that had happened shortly after the agent went missing but after that its almost as if she'd become invisible. As if she never existed. It had taken a long time for me to convince the Italian Institution to erase me from the system, Schwarzer Regen had done it no problem without even speaking to them. The German Institution had filed her under 'dead' and labelled her a 'cancelled experiment.'

I took a quick shower then got dressed and jogged downstairs, rushing to get some time with my mother before everyone else showed up. I opened the door to the kitchen to find her in the obvious spot, wearing tracks and a tank top whilst gossiping with Mariana - Leo's mom. I walked up to her and grabbed her planting a kiss on her cheek, she smiled squeezing me tighter. "Buongiorno mama, come è stato il sonno?" I smiled. She rolled her eyes but replied anyways.

"How sweet." Mariana clasped her hands smiling at us.

"Oh goodness Mariana don't buy this sh-t, he's done something wrong."

"No I haven't." I assured Mariana becoming defensive.

Leo walked in, "God Dominic, can you not start drama with the women for one second?"

"Can you not be so inappropriate for one second." I retorted, these were our mother's for goodness sake.

"I just can't help myself."

"You see that Belladonna? That is bullsh-t." Mariana said dismissing her son from the conversation, earning a satisfied snort from me. My mother rolled her eyes once again which I noticed was becoming a habit of hers.

"You shouldn't roll your eyes mama, they'll get stuck like that." I pecked her cheek once again and started walking towards the dining room where we always had our meals. This was a good opportunity to see how many of the familia had already moved in. Leo followed behind me with a fresh cup of OJ and Claire descended the stairs - with a phone to her ear - talking extra fast in italian to someone on the other side, some bullsh-t about shopping and looking extra good for you-know-who which I hoped wasn't Leo because I would punch the smug look right off his face if need be.

As soon as she sat down she said 'addio' to her friend and placed her phone on the table, not before putting it on silent. "Hi Leo." she smiled looking Leo dead in the eye daring him to ignore her - which is what I had advised him to do if he wanted to keep his face looking pretty. "Are you ignoring me?" Claire pouted resting her arms on the table and cupping her head in her hands. I rolled my eyes.

"Stop being such a slut Claire, gain some self-respect." I remarked still looking through all the texts I usually get in the morning and dumping the useless ones in the trash. I hated seeing her like this, mainly because so many women had done it to me before and sickening enough it had worked.

"Stop pretending like your such a saint Dominic." she sneered.

I snorted, "And what exactly do you expect to gain from this?" I looked up from my phone to find her with crossed arms, red cheeks and a broken look on her face. She was embarrassed. I embarrassed her in front of her crush. "Leo here has a loyal and serious commitment to the bro code. Bro code number three; never date your bro's sister. Its common sense, not rocket science."

"F-ck bro code." she retorted picking up her phone once again, probably to tweet about it. Something deep about how normal everyday things can get in the way of true love or some bullsh-t like that.

"Language!" my mother scorned as she placed a tray full of assorted breakfast related foods earning a chuckle from Mariana who held a tray of cups and drinks.

"Thanks mama, Mariana." I smiled to myself as I helped them set the trays on the table.

"Goodness Belladonna, you can't deny there is something different." Mariana commented as she sat in her seat and my mother let out a breath as she sat in hers.

"Maybe New York City does change people, in this case - for the better." she replied.

They were talking about me like I wasn't even in the room.

"Or maybe he is just happy because he scored one last chance to avoid marrying the Russian woman." my father said announcing his arrival. He sat in his seat at the end of the table as if he'd been there the whole time.

"Well good morning papa." Claire giggled.

"Buongiorno Claire." he smiled. He rarely ever smiles, mostly with Claire and my mother and sometimes with Leo's mother and sister as well. 'The women of the family are always treated like queens' he says. I wish I was treated like a queen.

"You mean Clarissa?" my mother questioned. My father nodded dishing food onto his plate, I followed his example and dished some for myself as well. Seeing as the dishing had begun, everyone began dishing and eating as they spoke.

"That girl is a pain in my ass. Excuse my language." Claire said.

"For the first time today, I agree with you." I replied.

Leo shook his head, "This is literally the first thing I've said since I sat down. Clarissa Bogart is a spoilt, overwhelming bitch who needs to be shown what it's like on the other side of daddy's gold iron fence."

I chuckled giving him a high five.

"Settle down you two, it is not right to talk smack about people who are not here." Mariana frowned.

"Yes, it is much more appropriate to say it right to their face. So, when Clarissa comes for the brunch on Sunday we must all let her know what we think. Honestly." my mother said obviously making a joke but it didn't seem like a half bad idea. Mariana chuckled shaking her head and everyone smiled broadly, was I the only one taking that seriously? It was about time I told Clarissa how much of a pain she was, maybe then she would stop trying so hard to make this thing work.

Breakfast had gone by with everyone discussing the past few days of their lives and asking a lot of questions about mine, everyone seemed exceedingly interested in my life because it shocked them - as I was told - that I hadn't been dominating the tabloids for a solid three months now. I'd settled the discussion and assured them I was simply doing my job, nothing exciting or fun there - just endless paperwork.

It still fascinated them that I hadn't stayed home and trained extra hard like I was supposed to after graduation, I'd left to start my own company and obviously I'd outstayed my allowed date because I'd been ignoring my father's demands to return home for the past year. It was when my freedom was being yanked from right under me that I started paying attention and clearly it worked because I was home now.

Every mafia man came straight from training and into the business, no one actually went out to pursue said 'dreams' or 'careers'. A mafia man was a mafia man. But I was also a brilliant negotiator.

Leo and I had discussed going out to play football on the field and were now heading out the door, Claire shouted my name from the stairs and we both stopped to look. She came running out coming to a stop right in front of me, "Can I talk to you a bit?"

"Of course." I said. Leo kept walking obviously realising he wasn't welcome, not that he wanted to hang around with the both of us together since its been extremely awkward recently after Claire's shameless flirting began.

"Don't get me wrong I am so happy you're not marrying Clarissa," she started and I nodded, "but I would still absolutely love it if you would find like a girlfriend or something extra soon. I don't have many friends and it gets lonely."

"Claire seriously?" I snorted, "What about all your friends from work?"

"Uh no Dominic, they're all sluts."

"That's rude Claire."

"Shut up Dominic, you're the last person that should be lecturing me on my manners."

"Hmm okay. I'll see what I can do." I chuckled turning to walk away and just as I thought I was off the hook..

"None of that short term dating thing either!" Claire sang from behind me, "None of that temporary plaything bullsh-t you do either! The real deal!" she shouted after me and I replied with a wave behind me and kept walking. So long as it gets her off my back.

I rolled my eyes as I approached Leo who had been watching from afar whilst tossing the football from one hand to the other, "You better not have been checking out my sister."

He ignored my comment as he got up, "Sibling problems?"

"She just wants me to hook her up with new friends." I replied as we started drawing further apart whilst passing the ball to each other, stopping when we were at a comfortable range.

"How about Clarissa." he shouted.

"What about Clarissa." I replied, just as loud.

"How'd you get out of that? You can't tell me it was sheer luck or from the goodness of Santo's heart."

I cringed at the mention of my father's first name, I almost had that name once. "I really f-cked myself over on this one."

"What did you do?" Leo asked catching the ball then holding it under his arm.

"I told him that I would find Schwarzer Regen, marry her instead."

Leo burst out laughing, dropping the ball and falling to the ground and staying on his knees. He stopped then frowned a little the grin still not completely wiped from his face. "Your serious."

"Of course I'm damn serious!"

"Dude I'll help you. Promise." He said getting up causing me to roll my eyes, "So she was trained by Germans right? I can find the place, the institution she was trained. A great place to start."

"Seriously? That would be golden," I grinned, "How in the hell are you gonna do that?"

"I have connections."

"Oh. Nice." I eyed him, since when did he have connections? Last I heard I was his only connection.

"I have friends Dominic." he said almost as if he heard my thoughts.

"I didn't say you didn't."

"Oh sure."

"Serious."

"Just shut up and let me find the guy," he frowned down at his phone holding one of his hands up to my face. I frowned.

"Maybe if you use two hands..." I dragged.

He huffed then brought his other hand to his phone, typing like the wind.

After Leo had texted his 'guy' he'd given me an address to the place, even the floor I needed to go to and pin to all the doors in the building. Man his 'guy' was good.

I sighed as I flopped back onto my bed with the file in my hands, from what I had been reading over the killings committed by Schwarzer Regen were all leading up to one person and once she had found this person obviously she had stopped looking because once she'd found them, they were already dead.

Philip Euler. The owner of the German Institution, inherited from his father only a decade before I was born. Real old guy too. He'd been killed only a couple months before Schwarzer Regen had shown up at his doorstep, not bothering to cover her face or wear protective gear and with a gun just hanging loose in the palm of her hand.

The woman who had answered the door was Euler's wife and Regen had murdered her along with Euler's two sons. Two clean shots in all of their skulls, capped bullets and everything. No real motive, probably just anger from not being able to kill the guy herself. I can imagine how aggravating it must've been to spend so long looking for someone only to find out that all you worked for was a waste because they were already dead.

My brain itched, aching to know why. Why had Schwarzer Regen been so eager to kill her boss? He must've done something horrible, aside from the experiments they'd done on her during those six years of training - what could it be? From what I heard the woman trained and was experimented on but at her own will, she didn't complain and she worked hard at her training. If she had truly been upset about the things that happened to her whilst staying at the institution she could've dropped out. But then again maybe she couldn't... maybe that is the reason, she wanted to get him back for the pain he caused. To me it sounds ridiculous but she was a woman after all, a little girl admitted into a training facility at the tender age of twelve.

I wouldn't be surprised.
