I get out of the shower and fix myself a sandwich and some chips. I flip through the channels and settle on Live PD.
After eating the quick meal, I take my plate to the kitchen. On my way back, I spot my phone. I sit down and watch a police chase that ends in a wreck in Tulsa.
That makes me think about Bethany. I wonder what she is doing right now. She had said that they were camping out tonight at a bonfire.
My phone vibrates a reminder of a missed call. I checked it. It was Bethany and she left a message. I listen to it. Holy shit! Can't she go home without fighting?
I dial her number. She answers. "Please tell me that you're not fucking someone and calling me again!"
I'm shocked! Seriously?! Someone would do that? I chuckled, I couldn't stop it from escaping. "No I'm not fuckin someone while calling you. A real man puts all his attention into his woman."
"Oh God! I'm so sorry, Demo! I thought that it was Thermo again." I can tell that she was totally embarrassed.
"So Thermo called you while he was having sex with a woman?"
"Yes. Its ok though. He will be driving a smart car for a week. I'm thinking a light blue or pink one."
I laughed. "What the hell? Tell me the whole story." She told me about his call and the bet that they made.
"When he stopped she kept on chanting his name, and faked an orgasm. Telling him that he was the best and screamed his name." She finished with a hard laugh.
I was laughing with her. "Sounds like your having an eventful night!"
"I am! Actually my half sister came to the bonfire too. We made up and are speaking again. She took my advice on getting back into school and away from her parents."
"Wow! Now I'm thinking that my life is boring as hell. First the fight, then your sister, then Thermo. Maybe you should take a break from your vacation to relax.''
Bethany's laugh is so fuckin sexy! "So you got my message then."
"I did. I'm wondering if you can go home without fighting."
"I can. From what my brother's ex told us, Kevin found out that Jaden was going to be here and was going to fight him. When he got here, he saw me and changed his mind. He was going to fight me in revenge. At least Hayley has decided to leave him. She called her dad and he picked her up."
"That is good. Do you have any injuries?"
"Nothing more than a sore head where he pulled my hair while I kicked his ass."
"I want details of the entire fight. Explain."
She told me every detail of what happened. "Then he got in his car and left. Hayley used my phone to call her dad. She told him that Kevin has drugs and stolen property in their apartment. Her dad said that he will make a call. I'm guessing they will report him to the police."
"I hope so too. So what else are you leaving out?" I know she is. She had hesitated a slight second. Just as she is doing now. There is something that she is trying to not say. I want to know what it is.

"He told me to watch my back. That he will get me. But I'm not worried about him."
"Take your badass attitude out of the equation for a moment. Do you think that he may try to jump you again?" I can tell that she is thinking it over.
"I think that he may try. If he is given the opportunity. I have embarrassed him twice now. This time, it was in front of about fifty people and he lost his girlfriend. A normal person would just tuck tail and lick his wounds. An abuser is not a normal person. Fuck! My first trip home in a year should be peaceful. Maybe it is just me that can't be peaceful."
"It is not you. You just happen to cross paths with a stupid idiot who thinks that he can best you. Don't worry about him. You have a great time with your family." I tell her.
"Does this affect my position on trying for the new job?"
"No. There is more to this Kevin than you know. He has beaten Hayley into two miscarriages. He looks for fights with women. You fit the only criteria that he has for an opponent. That isn't your fault."
"But as a soldier. I should have walked away from the fight. Or at the least I should have de- escalated the situation. I apologize, Demo. I know that I can get a dishonorable for that. Now it's happened twice."
She sounded so depressed. "Get that shit out of your head! You are a hell of a soldier. You didn't start it. You ended it. At least for a while."
"I can't be too good of a soldier when I have wanted to kick Warner's ass when he ruined my phone a few months ago."
"How did that happen?" I look up at the clock. Almost three a.m. so it is almost five in Tulsa. But I just don't want to stop talking to her!
"I left my lunch with my phone on the table in the break room so I could wash my hands in the attached restroom. I came back and he was eating my chicken sandwich while he poured my coke on my phone. I really wanted to stomp his ass."
"Oh really? Did he pay for a new phone?"
"No. He laughed and said that he thought someone had gotten his lunch order wrong. Their punishment was a wet phone. I went without lunch and couldn't get a phone until the next evening. He made me stay late to do someone else's work."
I'm pissed off at what she was telling me. Warner will reimburse the phone and lunch. "I will check into repayment for your phone and lunch. Warner is a total bitch."
"Can I tell you something?" She asked quietly.
"You can tell me anything you want. I will never judge you."
"If I don't get into your unit, I'm not re-enlisting. I'm done! I can't take anymore of him. I would get a dishonorable for killing him. That scares me."
"Between you and me, only! You are already in. Thermo would never call anyone unless they are family, friend, or unit member. He has already excepted you. I run this unit and say who is in or out. You are in. You won't go back to Warner. Hell, I even got you moved today with no problem. I just hope that you aren't the one who is a slob. That kitchen was a fuckin disaster!"

She chuckled. "No, that is all Johnson. She expects me to clean after her. I've never been messy. I guess I get that from my dad. He always told me that a clean house is an organized house. It takes less time to clean as you go, than to clean once a week."
"Very true. Well I'm going to let you go, now. I know you're probably tired as hell."
"Well its only five o'clock. Almost time for my morning p.t.!"
I laughed with her. "Well I won't be upset if you skip p.t. this morning. Sleep late. Call me any time. I'm always available."
"Me too. It was nice having a civil conversation with someone not having sex. Thanks, Demo."
I laughed. "Not a problem at all. I will look for the sissiest smart car that can be found."
"Thank you! But he can't drive it until I'm able to video it! It would be funny if he thinks that I forgot about it."
"I won't say a word. Later, nerd!"
"Later!" We hung up. I stood and went to bed.
I wake up at eight to a ringing phone. "Yeah?"
"Damn sleeping beauty! Wake your ass up! What'd you do last night? Get drunk?" Thermo asked.
"No. I was on the phone until three o'clock. What the fuck are you doing fucking someone and calling nerd?" I get up and go piss while Thermo is on speaker.
He laughs. "She call you crying because I called her?"
"No. I returned her call and she answered with the words. 'Please don't tell me that you're calling again while fucking someone' . She apparently didn't check her phone before answering it."
He was laughing his ass off. "Now that's funny!"
I chuckled. "Actually, it was funny. The reason that she called in the first place wasn't too funny though."
He sobered up. "Shoot."
"That fucker, Kevin, started his shit with her again. He has been working on his skills. She had to actually fight him. He might be in jail today. I need to check on that."
"What do you need me to do?"
"Nothing yet. I'm going to reach out to the Tulsa p.d., see if he was arrested. He told her to watch her back. He doesn't realize that we will watch her back."
"What would he be in jail for?"
"Drugs and stolen property." I told him about my conversation last night. "So I will contact them and see if they have him. If they don't, I'll see if I can put a bug in their ear."
"What about her dad? He's a cop there."
"Last that I heard, he was working a homicide last night. Nerd and her brothers were at a bonfire."
"Gotcha! Alright, let me know if you need me..... oh by the way, do you need help getting her moved?"
"No. I did that yesterday." I grinned knowing that he was probably wanting to look through her underwear.
"Fuck, man! You took all my fun away from me! What the hell am I supposed to rag her about now?"
"I'm sure you'll figure something out. Also, Warner owes her a phone and lunch. The prick will pay it back."
I had to explain about that too. "He might have just pushed it a little too far this time."
"I know he has. I gotta go. I need to get this shit taken care of in Tulsa."
"Later!" We hung up and I look up a number for Tulsa police. I need someone more than a front desk. I call booking.
"I'm looking for booking information on a Kevin Smith. Maybe brought in last night or early this morning."
"One moment...... I'm sorry sir, we don't have anyone by that name. Could it be under another name?"
"I don't know of any other name. Thank you for your help."
"You're welcome. Have a nice day."
"You too." I hung up and cussed. I try to think of what I should do. Apparently Hayley and her dad didn't call about the drugs and stolen property. I book a flight to Tulsa. Then I called Thermo. I explained that I had a bad feeling about the situation as he drives me to the airport. He tried calling her phone. She didn't answer.
I dialed her as I waited on the flight to board. I left a message. "Bethany, I don't know why you aren't answering my calls. I'm on my way to Tulsa. When you get this message, give me a call and leave a message. I'm boarding in a few minutes." I hang up and board the plane.
When we land, I check my phone. Nothing. I call Thermo. "Have you heard from her?" I ask as I deplane.
"No, I haven't. Granger can't find any action on her debit card or phone. I got a bad feeling, brother!"
"Is Granger with you?"
"Yeah."
"Have him check Kevin's phone and any cards he has. Let me know what he finds. I'm getting a car and heading her way."
"Later!" We hung up and I got a car.
I call her again. No answer.
I am almost to her house when my phone rings with her picture. I answer. "Where are you and why haven't you answered my calls?"
"Excuse me? That isn't the way to talk to my daughter!"
"Detective Adamson! I apologize. I have been trying to contact Specialist Adamson for hours. She was supposed to call me and hasn't."
"And you are?" He asked me.
"I am Staff Sargeant Tanner Cline. Specialist Adamson is under my command. She failed to check in this morning after telling me of trouble last night. Do you know where she is?"
"She's in the hospital." He told me where to meet him. There was ice in my blood. He got to her!
I call Thermo and tell him what I know.
