《Linger》Chapter 16

I didn't see Mrs. Ortiz for at least a couple of days. I was beginning to wonder if Dane had killed her after all, but I was too afraid to mention it to him. I just kept my mouth shut and went along with the days that followed.
Dane sat quietly eating our take out he had gotten after work. It felt like any other day but unlike today he was silent. His cold and observant eyes loomed over at me. It was quiet, quieter than usual. The eerie sound of silence was beginning to engulf my mind that I straighten up and pushed my chair closer to break his dead look. "so"
He hardly budged at all, he kept his gaze on me and continued to eat.
"Um, how was work?"
A grin slowly spreads across his mouth. "Interesting."
I shift in my seat "Interesting how?"
He scoffs and his dead eyes slightly light up with amusement. "People are stupid, selfish and wasteful...You know" He begins to laugh "when I see those pathetic waste of people walking past me everyday its as if I hear their bones break and their blood gush. Its like they are begging me to kill them. They are like sheep running around waiting to be hunted. It can be exciting yet pain in the ass."
"I..don't...understand" It was all I could muster up to say.
"Oh sweetie you don't have to understand." he smirks and continues eating. "It's a curse." His smiles fades away and stares off into space. His gaze lost away into the deep dark pit of darkness, where his fantasies and memories lie. I realize he was far more troubled than I expected. "You know I started killing animals when I was 5."

I didn't say anything.
"It started with birds and soon developed to neighborhood cats and dogs." he continued, "My mom thought it was a phase and that perhaps I would grow out of it, and I myself believed her." He scoffs. "but the thoughts never went away, I wanted so badly to see what it would feel like to see the life leave someones eyes. To feel that power...the pleasure. Which is why my mom left me, she abandoned me and left me with my fucking abusive father. She didn't even try to help me." He finally looks at me, his eyes watery red. "She left me when I needed her the most...she left me and had another family while I didn't have one anymore" tears were now spilling. He abruptly dropped to his knees causing the food to fall off the table.
Shocked, I didn't know what to say, he was bawling his eyes in front of me. For the first time that I've known him, he was crying. Unbelievable! This serial killer was on this floor crying like a fucking baby crying his eyes out and he wants me to feel sorry for him? Fuck no.
"Won't you come and hug me?" he says under his breath, his hair covered his face.
Nonchalantly I sit and embrace him in my arms, feeling his stiff and lean body move up and down as he cried. Suddenly he looks up and that fucking look he gave me, made me shiver. That look that made me think twice and at times I had to remind myself I was talking to a killer and not a handsome perfect innocent looking man as he appeared. His swollen blue eyes searched for mine, "you'd never leave me, right?"

I was lost of words, "wha...I......." what did he expect me to say. I look around and try to find my composure, everything about this was not sane but I could see how hurt and broken he was. Maybe his mom leaving him did have a big of an impact on him to become what he is today or maybe this is all an act.
The words rolled reluctantly off my lips that I felt the world slow down for just a brief second, something that was dangerous and possibly something that had changed everything, "I will never leave you Dane."
