《Linger》Chapter 15

Dane was up all night dismembering the poor little puppy's body; washing and rinsing the small little bones, inspecting and gawking at his meticulous perfect work. I could hardly handle the smell and fell asleep with my hands against my ears; trying to ignore his ecstatic amusement.
It had to be early in the afternoon because I could already feel the heat from sunlight beaming through the curtains. My head pounded so hard I felt so dizzy as I tried to get up from Danes bed. Not to my surprise he sat on the corner of the bed, blankly looking at my expression probably wondering what I was thinking. His eyes had a way that they could be so intimating that I just wanted to crawl under my skin and hide away from his prying eyes. Slowly he eagerly crawls to my side but I retract.
"Don't back away from me" he whispers.
I scoff and scoot over to the other side of the stiff bed.
Effortlessly he holds me in place and pulls me against his chest. I try to push him away but I'm weak compared to him. "Don't fight me" he begins to nibble on my earlobes. I pound at his chest hoping that I hurt him hard enough that he'll let me go. He takes a large whiff of my hair and presses me closer against his hard chest. Oddly enough I expect him to smell of blood but instead he smelled like his usual coffee beans and vanilla. But then again he wouldn't smell like that, he was calculated and a perfectionist, and that's what made him dangerous. "That's all I need, just one big sniff of you and you just get me high." he laughed quietly.
"You're sick"
"But never of you" he muttered

I continued to push him trying to at least free myself from his grip.
"Stop, Stop. Can't you see I'm doing this for your own good."
"For me?" I retort. "So you're killing people, you raped me, keeping locked in this house for my own good?"
"Oh honey, first that was not rape I said I was sorry. And secondly yes staying her in this house is for you're own good. Tears were starting to build up, there was no point in arguing i was stuck.
"Baby don't cry."
I punch him right in the nose and before I knew it I felt a sharp sting across my cheek. He slapped me. "This is your life now, this is your home. You belong to me and only me. Stop fighting and admit that you are here...forever."
Forever. Those words rung in my head over and over again. I could feel the knot in my throat grow. This is my life. I would die here and no one would ever know. No one. Perhaps he's right, I should just come to terms with it. There was no point, I was already dead inside anyways.
==
A couple of months passed, two months and half to be exact; thanks to the daily news that I watched every morning when Dane went to work. I was able to keep in touch with time and count the days I've been in here. It was my chance to see what was happening in the outside world, a chance to see if my family still searched for me but as time passed they showed my face less and less on the screen. Soon I was forgotten and it wasn't long before they considered me deceased.
Dane came home in his usual time 4:30. He carried take out in his hand and eagerly kissed my forehead. "How was your day?" he asks

"It was alright." I pull on one of the loose stings of the hem my sweater. Everything I owned were clothes he picked out for me from the thrift store. He said he knew what looked good on me.
Blinded by his own enjoyment his continues to ramble on about his day at work.
"So" out of breath, he kneels beside me. He looks at where I'm picking and takes my hands in his "Why are you sad?"
"You know why"
He sighs and lifts my chin up. "You are home. Remember that. I know I'm crazy and sometimes go off the rails but I would never kill you. But, I will...kill for you." he says quietly.
His deep voice made me shiver and I could feel the goosebumps travel down my spine to the tips of my fingers. It made me so uncomfortable that somehow made me excited as well. I mean what else was I supposed to do, I had given up.
His warm lips asked for entrance and I let him. His leathery tongue danced with mine as his hands cupped my face. He lifts his sweaty hands underneath my sweater but stops to the sound of the knock on the front door.
He grunts and stands up, "Who the fuck is knocking my door.." he starts to mutter. He lifts the curtains and exhales.
"I need you to stay quiet and out if sight. Do you understand?" He commands.
I nod.
"Good, now go to the room."
I quickly do before he opens the door.
"Mrs. Ortiz!" I could hear him close the door. Slowly I peak through the curtains of the window in the room that also faced the yard. He signed hands along with Mrs. Ortiz. I had no idea what they were signing but I could see a necklace in her hands. The back of Dane was facing me but I could tell he was not happy. For a second Mrs.Ortiz eyes meet mine.
Quickly I move up and close the blinds. She saw me! Oh god I hope she doesn't tell him anything. I take a deep breath before I slightly raise the curtains. I see her eyes on me again. With my lips I mouth help me and quickly raise my index finger against my lips hoping she would understand to keep quiet. She looks back at Dane again and smiles. Dane suddenly begins to look back and I quickly close the blinds again before he could see me.
I hear the door unlock and close. Swiftly ignoring the thumping of sounds of my chest, I sit on the edge of the bed and try to gather my composure.
"There you are." he smiles.
"Where else would I be?" I creak.
He nods, "Come lets eat some food, I'm starving." his eyes gleamed.
I sit and bring one of the plastic forks to my side, "I was wondering, um what did Mrs. Ortiz want?"
He looks up, "Why do you want to know?"
I take a bite to keep me from breaking down. "I'm just wondering."
"She found this necklace in the lawn hiding in the bush. It belonged to that son of bitch I killed two months ago" He scoffs. "had to tell her that I lost it."
He voice disappears in the background and I could feel my breathing go back to normal, she didn't tell him.
