《Destructive Heaven》Chapter 8: Body

You found yourself removing the lid to your salad quite eagerly. It's been awhile since you treated yourself to a decent meal like this, even though it wasn't much. You grabbed the small, plastic container of dressing and proceeded to pour it all along the top of your salad in a circular motion. You caught Cain staring at you intently from the corner of your eye, and you decided to return his gaze.
"What exactly do I need to do in order to prep this strange meal?", Cain questions innocently.
You tilted your head in confusion for a moment. You felt a sharp laugh shoot up your throat, tightly sealing your lips together to contain it. You swallowed back your laughter, and grabbed ahold of Cain's dressing containers. You then proceeded to repeat the same thing to his salad as he watched in awe.
"Now you got to close the salad with the lid again, and shake it around until all the dressing is mixed in.", you spoke softly, beginning to shake your salad around as an example.
He followed your tutorial quickly, and soon both of you were chowing down. You secretly watched for Cain's reactions from the corner of your eye, secretly hoping that he would enjoy it. Why you would want him to is still unknown, but a great relief filled your heart as Cain smiled happily to himself. That smile suited his face beautifully; you almost could have fallen in love with a demon such as himself if he'd only stay that way for a little longer.
"It's actually quite a refreshing meal. What even is this? This strange, white meat is actually quite delicious.", Cain says, still chewing a bit of his food in his cheek.
"It's just salad. And that's chicken! I figured you'd find that somewhat enjoyable.", you said softly, poking at the lettuce.
Cain began to eat any of the chicken that appeared in his salad first as you watched with pleasure. You allowed yourself to forget the abuse for a moment in order to fully take in this rare moment with someone. Snowball even came out after awhile to eat her own dinner, which was interesting. She had been deathly afraid of Cain, but she seemed to have calmed down enough to come out of hiding.

"Then, maybe I'll go pick up some chicken breasts from the market to make for dinner tomorrow?", you mumbled shyly, but still eager for a response.
Cain's ears perked up, and his yellow orbs peirced through you like bullets. You felt a hot sweat slip down the back of your neck, but Cain's gaze slowly softened, and a small smile filled his jaw once more.
"I'd love to try that.", Cain cheers.
You slowly looked up to Cain's face as he said that. A faint shiver suddenly slid up your arms, and you found your heart beginning to race a bit. Cain's smile was eerie, and wide. His index finger was lightly tapping against the waxed table top; his breath was the only sound in the room. The tone shifted so suddenly, and that dread began to return to you once you realised that you'd never be safe when you were alone with it.
✞✞✞
It was much later now, and it was about time for you to head to bed for work tomorrow. Cain had disappeared after dinner again, but he said it was to attend to some of his 'other worldly' duties. You didn't seem to mind the peace and quiet though, since nights with Cain never seemed to go well.
However, your mind was still bothered by his smile earlier.
It was unnatural, and crooked. His eyes seemed lifeless, too. To say Cain gave you the creeps was an understatement, it was much more than creeps. He still terrified you, and caused your heart to beat with panic every moment he were to preform any basic movement. At any point, Cain could easily rip your head off your shoulders, or tear you apart limb by limb. That thought came into your head once more. Why did Cain appear before you?
Surely, there were many more horrible beings on this earth, people who've done far worse things than you could ever imagine. Was it simply just because you were an easy target for him? Does he believe that you'd truly give in to him, and just let him have his way whenever he wanted?
You slowly fell against your bed, hiding your face deep within your pillow. You gently gripped the other side of the pillow as you laid in the dark, deep in thought. Snowball softly jumped up onto the bed, and laid beside you. She curled her body up comfortably beside your side, and began to drift off into her own dreams. You gave her head a gentle rub, staring softly into her face as she purred.

It was a hypnotic sound; your lids began to get heavy as her soft rumbling radiated into your side. You had a few more moments of consciousness before you finally allowed yourself to drift off to sleep. And it stayed that way for a bit longer before the cheeky demon's presence was made known.
There was a weight being applied to the mattress beside both sides of your head. It caused your head to sink in a bit, before you finally began to open your eyes to investigate. When you finally got your sleepy eyes to focus, they were trapped under the stare of Cain's two fiery orbs. He had this subtle smirk striped across his face, his knee was suddenly placed on the edge of the mattress to help keep his balance.
His large, boney hands were pressed against the mattress, your head between them as your lip quivered with fear.
"Y-you're back?", you coughed out at him weakly.
He cocked his head slightly, his silky hair softly falling over his shoulder. He slowly removed his hands from the mattress and sat on the edge of your bed with a heavy sigh that escaped his toned chest. You slowly sat up in bed, resting your back against the wall your bed was pressed against.
"Are you okay, Cain?", you ask gently. There was this icky feeling building up in your stomach, you knew that this wasn't going to end well for you.
"You have no idea, love. I'm feeling a bit peckish.", Cain replies with a handsome grin. His fangs tightened together as he began to stare down your tired face.
You felt a knot form in the base of your throat as he stood up from the bed, his slender fingers digging in at the expensive tie wrapped around his neck. He began to tug at it, loosening it quite a bit before he started going at the buttons attached to his dress shirt. With his undid tie resting on his shoulders, and his buttons undone, which gave you a generous view of his beautiful, yet masculine upper body, you felt a hot blush fill your once pale cheeks.
"This is all you humans are good for, you know? Your bodies are to be desired by demons such as myself. Even this body you see before you, it was perfected to lure in helpless women like yourself.", Cain snickers, slipping the tie into his hand.
"Why are you telling me this? What do you want from me-", you quickly cried out before Cain lunged down at you, slamming your head back against the wall which sent a wave of shock, and pain down your spine.
Cain roughly grabs at your wrists, using his tie to tightly bind them together. You felt tears begin to well up against your bottom lid from pain, suddenly snapping back to reality as Cain dragged your lower body to the edge of the bed. Cain softly kisses at your fingers as you began to shake under him, which caused him to let out a wild laugh.
"I haven't done anything yet, love. Your fear is the sexiest part about you.", Cain coos softly before biting down on your finger, his fangs abruptly sinking into the tender flesh as his tongue snakes around the blood that softly escaped the wound. You winced at the pain, letting out a quiet whine.
"W-why did you bind my wrists together?", you managed to push out, but quickly figured it out on your own.
Cain suddenly pushed your thighs apart, staring down into your shocked face as the color drained away from your skin. He gave you a devilish smirk, and allowed his fingers to snake up your shirt. Before the tears in your eyes began to slip down your face, you caught one more glimpse of Cain's beautifully evil face as a few soft words escaped his lips:
"It's the only thing human's like you are good for, my love."

Sword System Academia
2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.
