《Into the Shadows》Chapter 22: The Dinner

"I think I should start off by tell you guys about the plan for the next few days." I said to the boys, "Tomorrow, we are going to see Danny at his church and he's going to bless us and then in the afternoon, not sure exactly what time yet, I'll let you know as soon as the tickets come through, we are taking a train to Rome. When we arrive, we'll be meeting with Father Leonardo Bianchi, an old friend of my father's. He will be able to help us, but if even he is unable to personally, he will connect us to someone who can."

"Great!" Was the resounding consensus, but Danny was confused.

"I still need to know what is going on, Mellie."

"Okay," I sighed, "This is going to be a long story."

We were interrupted when it came time to put our drink order in and again much later when we ordered our meals.

I tried to keep the story as short and brief as possible.

I dropped out of school because Mom needed help paying for my siblings, joined a film crew that came to Europe to film haunted stuff, and I think we are having an issue with "Satan the tempter" or something.

The conversation was quickly diverted into a heated discussion on demonology and general theology, but was interrupted when the food arrived. We quit the hell speak and moved on to devouring the delicious meals. We talked, caught up, and all around had a good time. I think the boys started to feel a bit more comfortable and more included when Danny started telling them embarrassing stories about our childhoods.

We grew up in the same area of suburbia on the East Coast and ended up attending the same private Catholic elementary, middle, and high schools, even though Danny is about five years older than me. Since all the school buildings were near each other, he would pick up my siblings and I and drive us to school, which of course my mom paid him for, but we became good friends because of my ability to have a rational theological debate. He never really had one with his classmates, so he thought I was cool. He also became like the big brother that I never had after Dad died. I got bullied for being socially awkward and he defended me, said if anyone wanted to pick a fight with me, he was the one that was going to kick their butt.

The night was amazing and was the most fun I had on the entire trip. Seeing Danny was amazing, I was so proud of him for becoming a pastor now too and I knew I would have to come back sooner or later to see him. The night ended with tight hugs and a promise to see each other soon, even though we would be seeing each other again in a matter of hours.

There was no time for small talk really by the time we arrived back to the suite at the hotel. We all collapsed into beds, Sam and Colby each taking a bed in one room and Corey and Jake in the other while I took the pull out couch. All doors were left open just in case something happened, but Danny had given me his blessed rosary to sleep with for the night just in case, so I was confident nothing would happen.

It was nice to have a night of uninterrupted sleep. I guess I didn't realize how much I needed it until the next morning.

The blinds were closed. I could hear the traffic and people milling around outside on the street as I trudged into the kitchen area to make a coffee. I dumped in a sizable amount of sugar and stepped over to the windows, pulling the blinds aside.

I took my phone off the charger, turning it on and checking my email for the train tickets. I nearly spit my hot coffee everywhere.

"Guys!" I screamed running around like my hair was on fire in a panic.

In the living room, I began to tear a change of clothes out of my bag and claim a bathroom to get ready.

"What's wrong?" Jake asked as I was still digging through my bag.

Corey was holding some of the holy water, "Demon?" he asked, squinting as he came into the brightly lit living room.

"It's noon!" I yelled grabbing the remainder of my stuff.

"So?" Colby asked.

"Check out is in half an hour! We are running so far behind!" I was panicking.

"It's fine, we can pay the extra fee for a late check out." Corey was trying to be rational.

"See, I would say yes to that, but the train leaves at 3:15 for Paris and we still have to go and see Danny before we head to the station. I'm sure you are all going to want to eat something good before we are stuck on a train for three hours and we have to get there an hour early for security and customs!"

"God dang it!" Sam yelled and ran off into his and Colby's room, then everyone followed his lead and went their own ways hurrying to get ready to see Danny and catch our train.
