Have you ever rolled your eyes at an unbelievable character? Do you struggle with writing your own? Or do you just want to get back in and improve some of your poor decisions?

Well, today, I'm going to dive right into the most common mistakes I see in OC

Guess what? People want characters that are interesting, and they can relate to. Your that has flawless skin, perfect features, and manages to beat every foe without breaking a sweat?

Boring.

And not to mention that it's completely unbelievable. You're writing about a world where there are Titans, Gods, and Monsters. The least you can do is try and make your character seem slightly believable.

Look, they're going to be a (most likely), but that doesn't make them invulnerable. One of my favorite things about is that he doesn't win every time. Right off the bat, he doesn't save his mother. He doesn't deliver the fleece. He doesn't save , nor . That's the thing, his story isn't boring because anything can happen, and we don't know if he'll win.

You knew this was coming. How many times have you seen a crazy overpowered character? People seem to forget that the average demigod isn't that powerful. They're strong, yes. Definitely better than the average mortal, but not every demigod is going to be as powerful as those in . But I get it, you want a powerful character, which isn't bad. Sometimes you have to bend realism for a good story. A way to balance your character is to create limits.

Your character shouldn't be able to go on and use their powers for hours on end. For example, if you've read , you'll remember that Nico, after shadow-traveling for long periods of time, was starting to fade. To turn into a living shadow. Nico's powers were balanced. He manages to be a strong character, but not strong on the point of disbelief.

Another balancer is creating a A glass canon is a character who is extremely good at offense, but offers little in defense. Essentially, make your character powerful, but make it so they die as easily as any other mortal. All it takes is one gunshot and they're done. Without their powers, they offer little. It creates a type of unique balancing in the character, which, when done well is amazing.

Honestly, most mistakes are avoided by planning out your character. Just do a bit of research, like on your OCs godly parent, and you can stop major errors. If you don't remember something, don't randomly guess, The PJO wiki is an amazing place.
