《The Ultimate Guide To Writing PJO Fanfics》Writing Nico di Angelo (Part 2)

.
Nico di Angelo is powerful, no doubt. But what most fanfics don't give him is limits. We're not talking about what he can theoretically do, we're talking about what he can do before passing out or dying. He has limits, he has weaknesses, he can't take out a whole army with a snap of his fingers.
A list of his oh-so many powers. (This is not my list. It is from an article that Wattpad is not letting me post the link to. It's a wikipedia article. And don't worry, I fact checked it with the wiki, and fact checked that with the books.)
Nico can force humans, skeletons, and monsters into a death sleep by pointing at them.
He shares his sister's ability to kill creatures of the Underworld.
Nico has dominion over the dead, giving him the title 'Ghost King'.
Nico can summon and communicate with the dead.
He can sense when a mortal or half-blood has died through a buzzing in his ears.
He can tell if someone he loves is in the Underworld and if they are being judged.
Nico can create flaming fissures of hellfire that then close, swallowing up living or dead creatures and immediately trapping them in the Underworld.
Nico is shown to be able to release a soul into the underworld, as he did with Daedalus.
Nico can shadow-travel, a form of travel that uses shadows that enables him to teleport to different places although this ability tires him after a long period of time and he can begin to 'fade'.
Nico can bend shadows around him to conceal himself, and solidify shadows to attack.
He can control dark energy like Hades but to a much weaker extent.
He can shadow travel others by force if he has direct skin-to-skin contact with them.

Nico can call forth Stygian Iron from the Underworld.
He can manipulate rocks (to block entrances and such), making them deadly.
He can cause immensely powerful tremors.
He can control the dark obsidian souls of the underworld.
He can cause numerous volcanic eruptions, landslides, small earthquakes and can cause shock waves through the ground. All of these powers weaken him.
He can force ghosts into silence by putting a finger to his lips
He can summon precious jewels and metals from the earth like his half-sister Hazel but less powerful.
From this list, I observe no instant death kill ability. I see several abilities related to geokinesis, but no instant death kill. He has many more abilities, including limited cryokinesis, umbrakinesis, hypnokinesis, and more.
I cannot guarantee a winner in a fight between Nico and Percy. You might bring up that Percy has had more time to train, but that's incorrect. Percy goes to school, Nico does not. Percy was asleep for months. Nico was not. In a sword fight, I believe Nico could hold up for a decent amount of time, but Percy would ultimately win.
However, in a powers fight, there would be no winner, as I believe both would hold back.
Keep Nico canon. His choices, his thought, what he says all have to at least be similar to his canon self. We know that he generally keeps himself guarded, and that he has had a lot of time to hone his skills. However, we don't really know how far he can go. If I remind you, Hazel literally compared him to a nuclear bomb.
Everything that Nico does is for a reason. You need consistency, and thought process. If you know what Nico is thinking, it makes it easier for the readers to understand the action. And consistency is key. If he's cracking jokes and laughing in one paragraphs, and suddenly doom and gloom in the next, the reader gets confused.

And remember, his fatal flaw is holding grudges, much like Luke Castellan. There are three ways Nico could've turned out. The same Mythomagic loving kid, who's innocent yet can fight, the way he is now, or more of a Luke Castellan type character, who was shunned and turned to the other side.
Nico has likes and interests. He doesn't just train all of the time. If you don't know if what you're writing is canon, you can always look in the books. And if you can't, ask me. I'll try my best to answer, and check the books for you.
He doesn't have that aviator's jacket anymore! He lost it in Blood of Olympus, so come up with an explanation if he somehow has it. And his ring doesn't turn into his sword! If I remember correctly, the ring was a gift from Bianca.
Nico's sword is Stygian Iron. Stygian Iron is the only godly metal that works on mortals too. It can only be used by Hades/Pluto and his children. Yet people forget that. Now, I don't believe Nico would randomly use it on mortals he didn't like, but mention that so you don't get corrected by some know-it-all, or me.
This was just writing Nico di Angelo. He's one of my favorite characters because at often times he can be relatable. He has limits, just like us. Nico never breaks, though, and always perseveres. He's a very fun character to write, and so complex he got two chapters.

Fallout: Vault X
An original novel set in the Fallout universe, written to be accessible to all, featuring unique people and places. Vol.II. out now Fallout: Vault X tells the story of John. A vault dweller, who spent every day of his twenty five years underground. Like his father, and his father before him. Proud to live in the last remaining bastion of humanity, all that survived The Great War of the atomic age. Hidden deep below the surface of the earth, toiling under brutal conditions. Year after year, decade upon decade. All to expand into the natural cave system the Vault occupied, building for the future. However, John knew what his forefathers did not, that everything he’d been taught was a lie. After finishing school at the age of ten, John received his standard issue pipboy. An arm mounted personal computer, worn by everyone in the Vault. Used to coordinate the relentless pace of expansion, needed to work as an apprentice. To learn the craft that would be his life’s work. A noble calling to ensure a future for all that remained of the human race. A quirk of fate saw John equipped not with the crude, clunky, pipboy model his father wore. That almost everyone around him wore. His looked smaller, sleeker, finished in a jet black sheen. And capable of doing far more than its drab counterparts. The world above had been ravaged by atomic flames, yet life clung to its bones. The Red Valley fared better than most in the century since the bombs fell. The clean water and rich soil protected by rolling hills. All spared from direct strikes, for the most part. Life survived here. Trees spawned from charred ground, misshapen, green leaves turned red. Along with simple crops, grown wild at first, then cultivated by the survivors. The scavengers of the old world were inventive, hardy people. All determined to rebuild in the ruins of a world they never knew. In the decades that passed settlements emerged. They grew, spreading along the valley floor. Reclaiming the pre-war remnants of the once industrialised heartland. Salvaging the robotic wonders of a bygone age to build their walls and work their fields. To protect them in the dark of the wasteland. But such things are uncommon in this world, and the rarer something is, the greater its value. And the worth of pre-war technology had not gone unnoticed. The last, real, power in this world rested in the mechanised hands of The Brotherhood of Steel. Forged from the mortally wounded old world military. The Brotherhood used its access to the weapons made for a conflict no one won to strike out into the wastes. Men and women were equipped with advanced armour, aerial transportation, high grade weaponry. Accompanied by the training, strength, and will, to put them to use. They established chapters and set up outputs far and wide. All dedicated to a single purpose. To ensure the technology left abandoned by its long dead creators didn’t fall into the wrong hands. Namely, any hands that were not their own. This is the world John escaped into. A place of horrors brought forth from atomic fire. A place where survival meant battling against the darkness. Fighting a war each day to get to the next. And war...war never changes
