Steven and the Gems are walking through the piles of random junk in Amethyst's room, in search of an object causing the foul odor throughout the temple.
"How can you live like this?" Pearl asks Amethyst.
"It was fine 'til you guys started whining." Amethyst grumbles.
Pearl covers her nose. "Whining?! The whole temple reeks!"
Steven probes some garbage with a stick and retrieves something wrapped in tinfoil. "I found it!"
Pearl pinches her nose. "What matter of magical alloy is this?"
Steven unwraps the tinfoil, and a puff of green gas plumes out.
"It's a burrito." Garnet comments.
Amethyst takes the visibly rotten burrito. "It's the Tuna Burrito from Aqua-Mexican!"
"That place closed like five years ago!" Steven says but Amethyst takes a bite of the burrito, Steven flinches in disgust and Pearl looks on in horror. Huh, what's this?" Steven asks as he spots a painting of the Gems and Rose Quartz on it. "It kinda looks like you guys and my mom."
"Oh Steven, that is us." Pearl says excitedly.
"Really?" Steven asks unsure.
"The hard part was getting the shark to pose." Garnet says.
"Why is everyone dressed like old timey people?" Steven asks now.
Pearl places the painting on top of a junk pile. "They are old timey people."
"Wait... But that would mean... how OLD are you guys?" Steen asks suprsied.
"Much older than any human." Pearl answers.
"Does that mean you'll live forever?!" Steen asks hopefully.
"No, no. We don't age." Pearl says and Steven makes a huge smile. "But we can still get hurt and die." Steven's smile quickly turns into a big frown. Amethyst then starts moaning in pain, visibly sickened, and keels onto the ground. "...But not from food poisoning."
"I just can't believe you guys are like a bazillion years old! How do you find a cake big enough for all those candles?"
Garnet briefly looks at Pearl who is confused. "We don't really celebrate birthdays."
Steven gasps loudly. "Why not?!"
Garnet shrugs. "It's not our way."
"Well I can't just ignore this tremesty of unjustice. I pledge that you will have your birthdays, with all the candy, cake, and ice cream you've been denied." Steven says and at that moment Amethyst throws up.
Steven had set up several birthday decorations on the beach such as a picnic mat with food items, a birthday cake with lots of candles, balloons, and a large "birthday throne". Amethyst sits on the throne wearing a cape, while Pearl and Garnet sit on folding chairs. Lion is seen playing in the background.
Steven begins crowning Amethyst. "And the birthday queen is, Amethyst! I hope you like it, Dad made me this outfit and it brings me special birthday luck every year." He says to her her before he begins to sing. ♫ It might as well be your birthday, so why don't we have a party? Even if your age isn't real and your body's an illusion. ♫ Steven sings but he notices Lion playing with a birthday hat and stops singing. "Hey!, I-it goes like this." He puts the hat on Lion's head, and Lion tries to take it off. "Lion, you're killing me."

Pearl was holding a balloon with a face drawn on it. "Um, Steven? I know you put a lot of effort into... putting faces on things. But could it be that we're just a tad mature for this ritual?" She asks Steven
Amethyst however begins using a birthday hat to mimic Pearl's nose, and pokes Pearl's nose with it. "Boop."
"GAH!" Pearl cries as she begins to chase Amethyst. "You will remove that this instant!"
"Wait!" Steven calls out to stop the two. "Here." He offers Amethyst a bat with a ribbon on it.
"Awww, thanks!" Amethyst says as she takes the bat. "I'll use it all the time!" She then says before attempting to hit Pearl with it.
Steven immediately stops her. "No! It's for the piñata." He explains holding up a piñata."
A now blindfolded Amethyst swings wildly at it. "The piñata is an artifact from ancient Aqua-Mexico." Steven says as Amethyst almost accidently hits him, scaring him. "A-a-aaaaah!" He quickly hands the piñata to Garnet and hides behind her.
Amethyst swings and smacks Garnet repeatedly. "Am I... getting... close?!" She asks before she hits Garnet in the head.
"Higher." Garnet says unphased and unhurt.
Amethyst takes a peeks, jumps at the piñata and smacks it flying out and into the ocean. Amethyst casts the bat aside. "Ha, what next Steven?"
"Well, you were supposed to get delicious candy when you broke it open." Steven says looking out to the ocean.
Amethyst gasps in sadness. "Wait, you had candy and you didn't just give it to us?"
"There will be more sweet treats at Pearl's party. I promise."
Steven brings the gems to a cliff overlooking Beach City. The Gems are sitting on a picnic mat, with Pearl now wearing the birthday outfit. Steven was now dressed like a clown.
"Happy Birthday! HONK." He honks his clown nose.
"Steven! That is a brave look." Amethyst says.
"No, it's funny." Steven tells her.
"How?" Pearl asks not understanding.
Steven tries to explain but stops. "Oh geez, I'm breaking character. Wait wait wait. I wrote some jokes!" He takes out a pile of papers. "Why did Pearl throw butter out the window?" He asks.
Amethyst looks at a confused Pearl. "You did what?"
"To see a butter-fly!" Steven cries.
"I never did that. Steven, are you telling lies?" Pearl asks upset.
"N-no! Oh, I know! Pearl, do you like pie?" Steven asks now.
"I DO like pie." Pearl says happily with a smile.
Steven gets a pie out of a picnic basket. "Well then you're in luck, I baked you a pie." He declares before he mockingly changes his tone. "I sure hope nothing happens to it!"
"Yes, me too." Pearl says still smiling.
Steven now intentionally trips. "WOAH! Whoops!"
But Pearl catches Steven with the pie in his hands still. "WOAH! Steven, I've got you." She stands him up. "Be careful, you almost fell right on that..." Steven shoves the pie in his own face. "Ah!"
Steven faces was now covered in pie cream. "See, Pearl? It's funnnnnnnnny!" He laughs.
Pearl however hides nervously behind Garnet and whispers to her.
"Pearl says she's all partied out and she's ready to go home." Garnet says
Steven turns around looking worried. "This isn't going at all like it should." He tosses aside the pie tin and takes off his wig. "I've got to pull out the ultimate birthday!"

Steven had brought the Gems to an empty parking lot in the town near the big donut. Garnet is wearing the birthday outfit now.
"Okay, there's no way you're not gonna love this!" He declares and points to three small kiddie cars. "It's kazoo racers! You get in a car, you play a kazoo, what more could you want?!" He blows into a kazoo and holds up three more kazoos. "Dad used to do this for me every year."
"I think this is why aging makes humans die!" Pearl whispers to Garnet anxiously.
"Steven, thank you for the birthday parties, but I don't think we'll need any more." Garnet tells him.
"Why not?" Steven asks.
"Our age is only an illusion." Garnet explains as she takes off the birthday crown. "And Pearl's pretty sure this ritual is more for human children."
"N... nothing against children." Pearl is quick to say.
"Children? Everyone gets to have birthdays, seriously, give it a try. You're never too old." Steven tells them.
"We're just too big." Garnet shrugs.
"You're not too big. Y-y-you just get in." Steven attempts to get into one of the kiddie cars now but he finds he is too big. "And then, uh..."
"I can fit!" Amethyst shouts as she shapeshifts into a toddler and sits in a small kiddie jeep. "Which way to the baby war?" She says as she drives the jeep. "EAT TREAD, DIRT BAGS!"
"What if birthdays are just for little kids? What if even... I'm too old?" Steven begins to ask himself now.
Amethyst drives next to Steven. "No way! You TOTALLY fit!" She picks him up and attempts to shove him in. "Oh, my bad, you are too old." She drives off and laughs.
Pearl looks at Steven a little worried. "Are you okay?"
"I just need to think." Steven says before he gets up with the car stuck to his behind. "Kazoo Racers suddenly seems undignified." He sighs as he begins to walk off with the car still stuck to him.
The gems all look at one another when they suddenly hear a familiar voice call out a greeting to them and they turn around to see Y/n.
"Hey Pearl, Garnet, Amethyst." Y/n says.
"Oh, Hello Y/n." Pearl says being the first to welcome him.
"Hello." Garnet greets.
"Yo." Amethyst says shapeshifts back into normal.
"So, what with all this stuff?" Y/n asks as he notices the tiny cars and party hats.
"Eh, Steven found out we don't celebrate birthday and tried to give us all our own ones." Amethyst says.
"Certainly sounds like something Steven would do. Speaking of where is he? " Y/n asks.
"He seemed a little upset about not being a small child anymore and wandered towards the beach walk." Pearl says.
"Well we all have to grow up eventually." Y/n sighs in understanding of how Steven must of been feeling. "So, what did you think of celebrating a birthday?" Y/n asks curiously as he changes the topic.
"Humans are... strange. I don't understand why they would choose to celebrate being a year closer to their inevitable demise." Pearl tries to say politely
"Well everyone one celebrates it differently and some don't celebrate it at all." Y/n explains.
"They don't?" Amethyst asks confused.
"It's all about personal preference really." Y/n tries to explain but Pearl and Amethyst look confused while Garnet shows no change on emotion. "Okay let's use you guys as an example. Pearl you hate eating food." Y/n begins.
Pearl immediately shivers. "It's just so...Disgusting!" She cries not being able to stand the thought.
Y/n can't help but laugh a little. "Well then you have Amethyst who loves food."
"Haha, yeah." Amethyst says thinking of food fondly. "But I still don't get it." She shrugs.
"Well you're both gems, but you like and dislike different things. It's the same for humans we all have our own personal preferences. It's what makes us all unique." He tries to explain but he's not sure if they really understand as Pearl seemed to be thinking about it and Amethyst still looked confused.
"So how did you celebrate your birthday this year then Y/n?" Amethyst asks. "I bet it was with a lot of junk food." She jokes.
"Oh, I didn't really celebrate my birthday this year." Y/n says rubbing the back of his head awkwardly now.
"Perhaps you have reached the level of maturity to see it is a tad bit childish too." Pearl says.
"Actually, It was because my mother was still in the hospital so we didn't even really realize my birthday had happened until it had already passed by." Y/n says and the mood immediately changes.
"Oh. Y/n, I...I'm so sorry." Pearl is quick to say feeling bad about what she had just said now.
"You don't need to apologise." Y/n says to her. "You know, I would gladly trade away all of my birthday celebrations for the moments I got with my mom before she passed." He smiles sadly before shaking his head. "Come on, We should probably clean this mess up before Steven gets back. I'll give you guys a hand." Y/n offers wanting a distraction.
The sun is down and the place is turning dark. Steven walks alone on the boardwalk as a mist rolls in.
"I never realized birthdays meant leaving things behind. All these parties, ugh, so embarrassing." Steven says to himself As the mist envelops Steven, his gem starts to glow, causing him to mature into a teenager, with facial face and pimples. He sighs in a cracking voice, when he sees Onion at the Funland Arcade. "Oh Onion, so young, so innocent." Steven turns around, as Onion pry open a game machine and steals the quarters from it.
Steven walks into the arcade and sees a game he used to play alot. "Whacker Man Jr.!" He cries and looks around nervously. "Ooh, I can't be seen playing a childish game like Whacker Man Jr. I better stick to sophisticated games, like regular Whacker Man." Steven puts in a quarter and picks up a small bat.
"It's whackin' time. You're gonna get whacked!" The game says and Steven bops a figure with a mallet and chuckles nervously.
Steven was walking on the boardwalk again. "That was fun, but a boy on the cusp of manhood can't spend the whole day whackering. I need to take control of my life." Steven sees a "Help Wanted" sign on the T-Shirt Shop's window. His gem glows and ages him into a full-grown man, deepening his voice and his current clothes visibly too small for him now. "It's time, to get a proper job." He enters the store and looks at the shirts. "But which one? Surf Master? No. Love Doctor? I'm too squeamish. Ah, now this is the job for me." He leaves the store wearing a red shirt that reads "Professional Beach Hunk" "Ha, this day went so fast, I need a pick-me-up." He walks towards the Big Donut, as his gem glows
Steven enters the Big Donut as a middle-aged man now with balding hair. "Two of the usual please, I've had quite a day."
"Ha, you must be confused pal, I work here everyday and I've never seen your mug before." Lars says to him.
"Oh hardy har, Lars." Steven says unamused. Lars and Sadie get startled and look at each other in confusion. "I used to make jokes, but you know what? I've had a lot of time to think today and sometimes you gotta smarten up, act like an adult. Because one day, if you don't, everyone you know is gonna grow up without you. And then you won't have little Steven to pick on anymore because I'll be a grown up too."
"... Steven... who?" Sadie asks confused.
Steven looks at them shocked. "STEVEN QUARTZ UNIVERSE! And I want THAT doughnut, right there!" He points at the doughnut case and sees a reflection of himself in the glass. "Woa-wooaaahhhh!" He cries falling back in shock.
Sadie rushes around the counter to help him now. "Sir, are you okay?"
"I'M... OLD!" Steven cries.
"Yeah, and nuts!" Lars comments.
"I'm going to have to eat fiber cereal, all my teeth are gonna fall out, and then, I'll have to eat oatmeal and it'll be sugar-free!" Steven begins to ramble and his gem glows and ages him further. "Sugar-free!" He wheezes and sits down at a table, and Sadie comes over to comfort him. "I need to reverse this! I need, a "reverse birthday"... The king costume." He turns to Sadie and Lars now. "Will you help me into my birthday suit?"
Sadie and Lars are stunned. Taking it the wrong way, Sadie chases the old Steven out of the Big Donut with a stool. "Yeah! You better run!" Sadie says waving the stool above her head.
Steven continues to run along the beach, but hurts his back doing so and he begins limping. "I'm... too... old... for this." His gem glows, aging him into a very old man with a gray beard, and he trips over. Lion then approaches him. "Lion..." Lion picks Steven up with his mouth and runs towards the temple.
Y/n and the Gems were on the beach as they were picking up the birthday decorations Steven had set up earlier.
"You know, Steven was right, this is fun." Pearl says as she was putting down a foldable table.
"You don't have to keep wearing that stuff. Amethyst says to Garnet who was still wearing the birthday outfit.
"It makes me feel... important." Garnet says back.
Y/n just laughs. "You don't need a birthday outfit to feel important Garnet. You guys already are important." Y/n tells them and the Gems smile before Lion comes in and drops the aged Steven in front of the Gems. Garnet and Amethyst rush towards him.
"Steven!" Pearl cries horrified. "What's wrong with him?"
"He's okay, he's just really, really, really, really old." Amethyst says to Pearl and Y/n.
"How did he get so old?" Y/n asks in shock and confusion.
"Gems can't die from aging." Pearl starts tearing up. "But he's half human."
"Can't we fix him?" Amethyst asks.
"My birthday suit might help." Steven weakly whispers.
Garnet takes the birthday suit off her and puts it on Steven who was now leaning against Lion.
"Good as new!... Right?" Amethyst asks hopeful but unsure and it makes no difference.
"Thanks guys, but I guess this suit's all out of birthday magic. We had a good run, huh?..." Steven continues to age further. Amethyst looks on in horror and Pearl is about to cry. Garnet grabs the others and pulls them away.
"More birthdays. Now!" She tells the group.
"Check it out, B-Day Boy." Amethyst says having shapeshifted into a kiddie car, with Garnet riding in her. "I'm a tiny car!"
"Beep beep." Garnet says.
"Kid... stuff..." Steven says as he keeps aging.
Amethyst shapeshifts into a piñata. "Ooh, piñata time!"
But Steven keeps aging.
"It's not working..." Y/n says as he can only watch on worried for Steven.
Amethyst changes back to normal and walks off to grab something. "Pearl! Get over here."
"I can't!" Pearl can be heard crying.
"FOR STEVEN!" Amethyst cries as she plants Pearl, wearing a clown costume and holding a pie, in front of Steven.
Pearl approaches Steven, weeping. "Oh, look!... I have what umm... what appears to be a delicious pie... I sincerely hope that... nothing happens to- OH STEVEN!" Pearl breaks down and shoves the pie in her face.
"Are you trying to kill him faster?!" Amethyst asks her. Pearl however starts crying and clings tightly to Amethyst. "Pearl!" Amethyst tries to break free.
Garnet shoves them aside and walks towards Steven. She picks him up and starts shaking him violently.
"GARNET?!?!" Y/n, Pearl and Amethyst cry as Pearl and Amethyst rush over to stop Garnet.
"Wait a minute, what are you doing?!" Pearl cries.
"Garnet this isn't going to help, It will only make things worse!" Y/n tires to tell her and Garnet stops.
"I thought... violence... would be the answer." Garnet says before she slowly puts down Steven, who is still aging.
The severely-aged Steven can only barely see and hear the Gems arguing in despair with one another. He slowly picks himself up.

Toothpick
“Hello! My humble audience! I, the Bard of the North, am going to tell you a tale. Nothing new, nothing old. A story of a hero, some may say, others a poor boy who was hated by the world.” The storyteller paused as he waited, right timing was everything when telling a story. Pacing… Too slow and the audience became bored then left without tossing even the smallest of coins. If he spoke too fast and rushed the story. It would leave the audience confused and having no reason to be impressed. So like any good storyteller, the Bard has to do a balancing act of sorts. Not too slow, not too fast. Just perfectly in the middle. “In a shattered country in the south, a novice princeling has the ambition to mend a torn tapestry that is his birthplace. Struggling to fend off those who would usurp the throne in an unending civil war spanning centuries. A mercenary that left only death in his wake, unable to stave off the monotony and peace of life. He looks back at the path laden with bodies, wondering if it was all worth it. Wandering souls summoned by a madman, travel away from a wasteland in a foreign land, the first alone, the others as companions. A deity, ancient in her years, waiting to be freed from a duty she no longer enjoys. For all these people and their stories, none are the hero of this tale. No, the hero is not grand, not wise, not ready.. he was punished for nothing of his doing, who was an outcast that was unloved by many, including his father.” This was always the big reveal novices use to jump off into their story. He did not start here, instead, like any good fishermen, he set the bait and waited until the fish bit before pulling. As he saw the audience's eyes focus, he then started the backstory. The harness, that stopped the listeners from having metaphorical whiplash. The foreshadowing. “But that is not where the story starts. No, not even the hero's birth. Where the story begins, is the boredom of the deity, a deity many know of. She who hunts for the impossible, the guide for those who have lost the path, the Huntress of Mallon--” A small pause, a short breath. “--All old names for a single powerful being that has roamed the grounds of this continent longer than any line of kings or queens, lords or ladies. A being of worship for many an individual…” One last breath. And he began singing the first verse.
