《Canary After Lightning》Ten

Joe called me to a crime scene, apparently Clyde Mardon was alive. I flashed my badge and entered the scene, Barry and Iris were talking nearby so I went over to them. "Hey," I said.
"Avery" Barry sighed, "What are you doing here?"
"I'm a detective, Barr, the minute my partners are called, I get called," I said. "What happened?"
"Police chase that led to a death" Iris said, "They nearly hit us, but Barry saved us and ran after to get license plate"
I huffed, "Iris, can I talk to Barry alone?" I asked. Iris nodded and headed over to talk to Singh. "Barry"
"I know," He said, "I can't exactly tell her about my speed"
"Barry, I know what your thinking," I said. "The lightning, man in the yellow suit"
"He was like me," Barry said, "He had to be"
"But how? Last I checked there was no particle accelerator before 2000" I said.
"I don't know" He sighed.
"Barry!" Joe came over with Iris. "What the hell happened?"
"We're fine," Barry said, "I ran after the car to get the license plate"
"Are you crazy?" Joe asks.
"Joe," I said. He waves me off, pointing at Barry.
"No, you are supposed to run the other way Barr, you aren't a cop nor are you invincible" Joe began scolding him. "Can you both give us a minute"
I give Barry a look, he nods and I take Iris to walk over to where Eddie was. "What's wrong?" Eddie asked.
"Dad's scolding Barry" Iris sighed.
"Oh," Eddie nodded. He pulled out his phone. "The sketch for the bank robbery this morning came back"
"Oh?" I asked.
"That can't be right, here, I'll be right back" He handed me his phone and I looked at the photo.
"What the hell?" I asked. I looked up at Iris. "Clyde Mardon was for sure on that plane when it was thrown out of the sky?"
"Yea, my father saw it clear as day," Iris said, "Why?"
"Crap" I sighed. He had to be one. "One-"
"Your father killed your mother Barry! There was no man in a yellow suit, just a scared kid trying to save their father!" Joe exclaimed.

"Dad!" Iris called out.
"No, Iris" Joe said. "I have done my best to take care of you since that night, and I have never asked for anything in return, not even a thank you. But what I do ask now is that you, for one in your life, see things as they are"
"Barr" I whispered. He walked off, leaving us practically frozen. "I know what he's saying is impossible, but maybe you should listen to some of his hunches, cause doesn't this look like someone you know?"
I hand him the phone and he pauses before looking back up at me, "What?"
"I started believing in the impossible when that man survived being struck by lightning," I said, walking off to follow Barry.
~
I didn't have super speed like Barry so I arrived a little late to the party, Wells was explaining what happened that night and Barry was still a little angry. "Those are all theoretical," Barry said.
"And how theoretical are you and your girlfriend?" Wells asked. "We mapped the dispersion throughout and around Central City, though we have no way of knowing exactly what or who was exposed. We've been searching for other humans like yourself and Detective Lance"
"You finally named us?" I asked, leaning on the wall.
"I saw one today. He's a bank robber and he can control the weather" Barry said.
"This just keeps getting cooler," Cisco said. I stood straight and walked to the middle of the room.
"This is not cool, he killed someone," I said. "The particle accelerator may have given good people abilities, but it gave the bad people weapons beyond police control"
"Mardon is still out there, we have to stop him before he hurts anyone else!" Barry exclaimed.
"Barry, that's a job for the police," Wells said.
"Good thing I am the police," I said. We went to leave when Wells stopped us.
"What's important is you. Not me. I lost everything. I lost my company, I lost my reputation, I lost my freedom. And then you broke your arm, and it healed in three hours" He said, pointing to the arm Barry broke. "Inside your body could be a map to a whole new world, genetic therapies, vaccines, medicines, treasures buried deep within your cells, and we cannot risk losing everything cause you want to go out and play hero"

"If you really wanted to save people, you'd let us go out and stop this guy," I said, "Cause if we don't, he can kill more than your stupid particle accelerator did!"
"Avery" Barry went to calm me down, trying to grab my arm, but I stopped him.
"I have risked my life for 4 years! I came back from hell with the plan to save my city both lawfully and illegally. I'm the goddam Canary that helped stop Malcolm Merlyn tear a city to shreds, I screamed in the face of Deathstroke, I lost my son in Hell because I was a bitch before the Gambit! I died for 7 hours and came back with a bloodlust to murder anyone who did me wrong!" I clenched my fist, nearly drawing blood with my nails. "You aren't welcoming a future where you can cure cancer, you're welcoming hell to this city"
I stormed out of the room, falling to the floor near the elevator and pulling my knees to my chest, trying to suppress the want to put a knife in Wells' chest. "Avery" Barry ran over, getting onto his knees in front of me. "Are you okay?"
"No" I shook my head, "We need to go"
"Where?" He asked.
"Starling City," I said, "We need to talk to Oliver"
~
The speed didn't feel real, it felt like I had just put my head outside a window as we were driving up the highway, but we were going far faster than a car. In what felt like minutes we were at the 'Welcome to Starling City' sign. Barry put me down and threw his jacket to the ground, stomping on it. "Oh my god," I said.
"Woah," he said.
"You good?" I asked.
"Yea," He said, "Okay, how do we contact him?"
I pulled out the commlink Oliver gave me after the fight with Slade, saying to just press power and it would connect with his link. "Oliver," I said.
"Avery?" He asked.
"We're in the city, we need to talk to you" I stated, "It's urgent"
"Meet me on Main and 19th"
~
We stood on the rooftop of some office building. "I've spent my whole life searching for the impossible" Barry sighed, "Never imagining that I would become impossible"
"So why come to me?" Oliver asked. "Something tells me you didn't just run 600 miles to say hi to a friend"
"All my life I've wanted to just... do more. Be more. And now I am and the first chance I get to help someone, I screw up" Barry said, playing with his hands, I put my hand on his arm, comforting him. "What if Wells is right? What if I'm not a hero? What if I'm just some guy who was struck by lightning?"
"I don't think that bolt of lightning struck you, Barry... I think it chose you" Oliver said.
"I'm just not sure I'm like you, Oliver" Barry shook his head, holding my hand. "I don't know if I can be some Vigilante"
"You can be better. Both of you" Oliver said, looking at me, sighing. "Because you can inspire people, in a way that I never could. Watching over your city like a guardian angel, making a difference, saving people... in a flash"
Barry nodded, looking at me. "Ready?" He asks.
"One second," I said. Walking over to Oliver to talk privately.
"One more week" Oliver sighed.
"I know," I said, "Have you made the arrangements?"
"Yea," He said, "He would've been 6"
"My little angel" I sighed. "Thank you"
"For what?" He asked.
"Everything," I said, hugging him. He hugged back.
"Be careful, little bird. You're not invincible" He said.
"Yea, but I am the Canary" I smirked, backing up. "Another lifetime?"
"Another lifetime" He smiled. He put on his mask and looked back at me and Barry. "Take your own advice, wear a mask"
In seconds he was up in the air, clinging to the wall with the help of his arrows. "Cool," Barry smiled. I giggled and held onto him, him lifting me up and holding on. In seconds we were gone.
Another lifetime, Ollie... Another lifetime

Upheaval - The Gentle Apocalypse
The world is changing, but people carry on. Early in the summer, the world started changing. It is not known who first found out, but magic was real, or had become real. Of course, with the world as interconnected as it is, it took only two days for most people to know about it. Online groups sprang up, eager to test humanity’s collective new toy. Quickly, it was found out that it was all but harmless; there were (unconfirmed) reports of deaths as soon as the first day. Nevertheless, it is a novelty to most, trying it out like you’d try sports or a game. The world marches on as scientists set out to study this new phenomenon, to use it for furthering our collective knowledge and to understand it. But that won’t show any results any time soon; it is only five days since the “Reveal” meanwhile I’m out camping. I had planned this since March, to unwind from sixteen years of studying. Finally! Finally I am done with school! Getting a job is another matter… So I figured, with this magic stuff, why not try out meditating on it? I’ve enjoyed more than enough books and other media that at least some of the magic methods should be viable. Turns out, the world might not let me relax. R15+ Coarse language and adult themes. Who Fixes Books Anyway?
On the pretense of a raise, the relatively new employee Pernie is called in to talk with her superiors. NOTE: This is a short story written for a class I took recently. As a result of deadlines, it does not possess the quality (or length) that I would like and is rather thrunkated. Perhaps sometime far in the furture I'll fix it up. For now, I have much more important things to work on, such as my other fiction.
