False friendship, like the ivy, decays and ruins the walls it embraces; but true friendship gives new life and animation to the object it supports. -- Richard Burton
Friendship is the complete explanation of what a Cheetah Girl is - if you have that true friendship, you can conquer anything you want. --Sabrina Bryan
Sean's P.O.V.
Nothing will ever amount to the anger that was burning deep within me. How could Serenity's father have the nerve to slap her with no sign of hesitation. He has no right to be called a father if he is only going to be picking sides. That Fiona girl is a piece of work. It's in my best interest to keep an eye on her. Girls like that will only cause trouble in the future. Better to be safe than sorry like my mother always say. I carried Serenity who had passed out in my arms back to my car taking her back home with me so that she will be safer. I can't have anything happening to her even by her own family.
"Darren, I need a favor from you. I need you to keep an eye on that Fiona girl and report back to me anything."
"Understood." Was all Darren said before taking his leave to get everything done. Right now, it's just me and Melody. She was watching Serenity carefully.
"Your name is Melody correct?"
Melody took her sight of Serenity giving me her full attention.
"That's right. Something you like to ask alpha?"
Ah. So, she does know I'm an alpha.
"Yes. I like to know how a mermaid such as yourself became friends with Serenity."
It's almost very rare for mermaids to become friends with normal humans in this day. I can even tell that Melody isn't your normal type of mermaid either. She's powerful. Almost as strong as Darren my beta. I believe Darren has no clue his mate is a mermaid since she's covered her sent very well. Only alphas can make out another supernatural being.
"Serenity saved my life long ago. Even if she doesn't remember that day. I swore to protect her."
Saved her? I would like to know more about the subjected but right now my top priority is getting my mate to safety. I had Melody tag along because I didn't want Serenity to wake up alone in an unfamiliar place without her best friend with her. The slap she received from her good for nothing dad is starting to swell up. I'm sorry I didn't make it in time faster. If I had made it on time that slap would not have happened.
"Mind telling me how Serenity saved you?" I asked Melody starting the car driving out of the parking lot.
"It happened when we were just kids. I was waiting for Serenity to come and meet me in the woods where there I had my secret base. It was a waterfall connected to a big pond. That place is always where my mother taught me how to change into my mermaid form. Serenity was taking her sweet ass time so I decided to take a swim. I changed and that's when I hear a gun-fire go off. A hunter saw me and tried to kill me. I tried to fight him off as hard as I can but I was still young and my powers were still unstable. I didn't know what to do. The hunter got me out of the water by my hair and aimed the gun at my head. At that very moment, I knew I was going to die."

Oh shit. I was not expecting this. I nodded for Melody to continue.
"I closed my eyes waiting for it to be over till I hear Serenity scream out my name. The look on her face was filled with shock not from only seeing me in my mermaid form but how I was about to be killed. Serenity threw a big rock at the hunter's face making him drop me and the gun. Serenity rushed over to my side pulling me away from the hunter as fast as she could. Once She got me to safety the hunter pulled out a knife when reaching back for his gun. Serenity was fast grabbing the gun in no time aiming it at the hunter. I could see the adrenalin pushing Serenity to fight back. Without wasting any time, the hunter charged at her. He tackled her to the ground trying to get his gun back but Serenity was not backing down. She knew if she messed up, we both would be dead. Serenity aimed the gun to the hunter's face and pulled the trigger. Everything was silent. The smell of blood filled the air. There lied the hunter dead with a hole in his head. The shock of killing someone caused Serenity to pass out. I changed back carrying Serenity back to my place where I explained to my parents what happen. When Serenity came to, she had forgotten everything that happened. Mom says its due to the shock that made her forget. At that point on I made a vow to always protect Serenity just like how she protected me."
After being told this I didn't know what to say. My mate took on a hunter and killed him. Hunters have forever been our enemy. Those assholes don't care of any supernatural being is good or bad. They will kill us. My mate has to be the bravest girl I know. To take on a grown hunter at such a young age is incredible. But knowing this makes me want to protect her more. I don't want Serenity to have to go through any kind of pain. She deserves to have a good life with no worries and fears of anything bad happening.
"Thank you for telling me this. But I have to ask you something. What will you do if Serenity was to remember that day?"
Melody turned her head to the side looking out the window as it began to rain. The rain reminds me of the day when I first met Serenity and how she saved my life. My beautiful mate saved the lives of a mermaid and wolf.
"If she does remember that day then I hope she won't reject me as her friend. It's my fault she was hurt that day.."
I gave a small smile. "She will. After all, she will find out soon anyways since I do plan on telling her that I am the wolf she saved."
Melody chuckled.
"So, it was you she saved. So, the person who covered the camera was one of your men? How? I saw no one else come into the room."

"The one who covered the camera was David. He's a vampire. He turned into a small bat to cover it up."
Melody looked at me with a confused look at her face.
"One of your pack members is a vampire? That's a first I hear."
I can see how this can come as a surprise since werewolves and vampires are also natural enemies.
"Not all vampires are bad. There are some good ones. David and I go way back. His coven kicked and I took him in. Simple as that. Although he can be annoying, he is a good loyal friend whom I trust completely."
Melody aw at me holding her hand up to her chest.
"That is so sweet!" She said.
"If you ever tell him I said that I will never forgive you!"
We both laughed the rest of the way back talking about other things that happen in our lives. I loved how much she was telling me all about Serenity. This is sure to help me when I tell her who I am. Okay. Now I feel the same as Melody. Oh, moon goddess, I hope she will love the real me.
"When do you plan to tell Darren you're a mermaid? I am pretty sure he thinks your human."
I watch Melody get stiff with that question. Does she prefer him not knowing?
"Yeah about that. I have no idea how I plan on telling him. I feel like he likes me as a human."
"He's your mate. I know he will love you no matter what you are."
We made it to my place with no trouble. Melody had her jaw drop when looking upon my home.
"What the hell!? Do you live in a castle!?"
I picked up Serenity carrying her out the car making sure to cover her from the rain. I lead Melody inside where she looked around in wonder like a child going on an adventure.
"It's just a regular mansion Melody. My friend who happens to be the alpha king lives in a castle."
I had to hold myself back from laughing seeing her reaction to knowing I'm friends with the alpha king. I told Melody to follow me up to the guest room as I placed Serenity down onto the bed.
"Watch over her for me. I have some things that need to get done."
"Will do alpha!" Melody saluted me. That reminded me of David in away. I have a feeling those two will become good friends and Darren will hate it.
David's P.O.V.
I flew fast as my little bat wings could take me back to Sean's office where I spotted Darren hard at work.
"Hey, Darren! I got some scary news."
Darren looked at me putting his phone away.
"What is it? I have somethings to take care of so make it fast."
Why can't he ever be nice to me! Once he tells his mate he is a wolf I will tell her all the embarrassing thing about him! Let's see how he'll like that.
"This is serious my wolf. Sean's crazy friend Paisley hired someone to investigate Serenity. I noticed this guy looking sketchy in front of Serenity's place. With my mind little control, I was able to find out. Though I'm too late since he already informed Paisley on everything there is to know about Serenity."
After explaining to him my news we both knew that this was serious. I and Darren both hate Paisley with a passion. It surprises me how only I and Darren can see how much she is a crazy-ass psycho! Sean may be sharp to point out things, but here is proof he is not 100% sharp! If I ever said that to him in his face, I know I will be dead. Poor me.
"David. Let's not tell Sean about this just yet. Right now, he has enough to deal with. For now, keep a close eye on Paisley and report back to me if she makes a move."
I smirked darkly.
"It's all right if I kill her if she were to fight me full-on?"
Darren turned around walking out of the office.
"Do as you see fit."
That was all he said leaving me alone. It's been a hundred years since I last killed a wolf. I can't wait till I get the chance to kill that crazy out of our lives for good. When will that women ever learn that Sean will never love her back? Now that I think it, I am the only one who has no mate. My beautiful mate was killed long ago by vampire hunters. My beautiful Emilia I miss you greatly. So pure and innocent that she couldn't bring herself to suck a person's blood without feeling guilty or a monster. Life without you is very painful, but I have a better life now so I know she won't have to worry about me on the other side. Now that I think about it will soon be the anniversary of her death. I should ask Sean to come with me. As much as I hate to admit it but I don't want to be only visiting her grave. I looked out into the rainy night sky that reminded me of how my heart will forever be in sorrow. I have given up in loving another for I fear I will lose them just as I lost Emilia. What a sorry excuse for a vampire I am.

Paths of the Chosen (Rewritten, Revised, and Reinvigorated)
Daniel Stewart was chosen to alpha test a brand new Immersive VR game, "The Realms". What he doesn't know is that he has also been Chosen by one of the Powers of a far-off world, and is now a pawn in a game much bigger than any he thought he would ever participate in. Will he survive and thrive in this strange new world, or will he stumble and fall, shattered by the ambitions of another? Does he have what it takes to walk the Paths of the Chosen?---Inspired by the Chaos Seeds novels, TheDespaxas's The Gamer, and a wide variety of games and books, although the world, characters, and systems are my own. Expect high fantasy, magic, combat and intrigue, love and loss, grief and passion. This story is intended for adult audiences and contains explicit sexual content, profanity, and violence (including sexual violence, although not by the protagonist and not as a focus of the story). Chapters with such content will be clearly marked, and all explicit sexual content will be behind spoiler tags. I prefer my stories to have happy endings, and especially in these uncertain times, I feel that it is important to maintain hope. While this tale will reach some dark places, I promise to you that, when all is said and done, the villains will be justly punished and the heroes will prevail and prosper. Remember: it is darkest before dawn, but dawn always comes. Please note also that although this story does not have the [Harem] tag, it does have an extremely slow build into a polyamorous relationship. Additionally, starting with Champion (book two of the series), the [Multiple Lead Characters], [Female Lead], and [Non-Human Lead] tags would also apply to varying degrees. This is a complete, ground-up rewrite of the original Paths of the Chosen, following feedback from here and elsewhere. It is now written in the third-person limited omniscient perspective and in the past tense. In addition, while the major plot beats are unchanged, most of what comes between them has been reconsidered and rewritten, with pacing and characterization as a special focus.---Update schedule: 2 chapters per week (Monday and Thursday), not counting bonus chapters. Chapter length is roughly 2,500 words on average, +/- 1,000 words. Chapters with explicit content tend to be longer so that they are still worth reading for those who would prefer a fade to black. --- Cover art by Agri Karuniawan (@artofagri). Follow along as this unlikely group of people join forces to help each other accomplish their own goals in this non-epic fantasy adventure.
