《Worth The Risk》Tía Bell

Isabella was Juan's younger sister. She was also the reason Delilah's middle name was Isabella. Delilah's mother, Megan, had a wonderful relationship with Isabella. They always joked that one day Megan would leave Juan and run away to be with Isabella. They were so close. It crushed Isabella when Megan passed, and like her brother, Isabella swore to always watch out for Delilah.

Isabella was just as charming as her brother. She was apart of his world. Some may say she was even more ruthless than him. The two of them together were anyone's worst nightmare. They were powerful. She stepped out of the airport and saw her big brother waiting for her. They embraced and said their hellos before getting into the car.

The two of them spoke all the time. They knew the life they lived was dangerous and unpredictable so they always checked in. Going a day without hearing from the other was entirely too long. Only if it was a five second phone call, they didn't miss the chance to say hi. The pair hardly ever connected anymore though. Usually Isabella stayed on the east coast and, until his recent move to Florida, Juan stayed on the west.

Juan was happy to see his Bell. It had been so long. Delilah had strong beautiful women in her family. Nothing in her bloodline would suggest she would be anything other than the headstrong boss of a woman she is. Her mother was sweet and soft spoken but she was brave and always stood firm in her beliefs. Bell always said what was on her mind and she meant every word. Never made a decision without careful deliberation. Juan took a quick glance at what she was wearing. Delilah also got her sense of style from her aunt.

Isabella knew why Juan had called her over. Delilah had been assaulted, and while he offered every comfort he could in life, somethings just needed a woman's touch. She was the closest thing his daughter had to a mother. Also, Juan didn't want to make it a habit for Miguel to keep putting his hands on women. He never wanted that to begin with. It was a despicable act. He knew Isabella would have no problem with setting Savannah straight.

"So, Juan," Isabella said while checking her hair in the mirror, "tell me about this Savannah bitch."

Delilah ran out to the store while Emma and Cyn were eating breakfast. She needed to pick up a few things. She was gone longer than she expected. Between traffic and her own indecisiveness in the stores, a thirty minute errand easily turned into a two hour journey. After she returned she ran to take a shower while Emma and Cyn were preoccupied in her office.

Emma heard Delilah come back home a little over an hour ago, but she didn't want to bother her. She figured if Delilah wanted to join them she would. Emma was worried about her. During breakfast, Delilah had only taken a few sips from her smoothie before tossing it down the sink. Not to mention she hardly said a word. The only time she did speak is if Emma or Cyn asked her a question directly. It was kind of awkward.

"Mommy?" Cyn said. She was sitting at Delilah's desk coloring and swinging her feet. She was worried about Delilah too. She didn't like seeing her so down. She wanted to help cheer her up.

"Yes, Cyn?" Emma said from the other side of the desk. She was also coloring.

"Is Delilah going to be okay?"

"Yes, baby. Eventually." Emma answered. She tried to sound convincing and hopefully but that's not what she felt. Seeing her love so hurt, hurt her too. Almost as though they shared a heart. Emma had never experienced anything like it.

"Savannah's going to jail, right?" Cyn asked because she absolutely should. Nobody should be able to get away with that.

"That's a little more complicated, sweets." Emma stopped coloring. "Let's talk about something else. What do you want to do today?" She had to change the subject. She didn't want to talk about Savannah or hear her named anymore or ever again if possible.

"I want to stay here with Delilah because she needs us, Mommy. She needs hugs and love." Cyn finished coloring her page and ripped it of the book. "Aaaaand pretty pictures."

Emma smiled. "You're so sweet, baby. Hey can I ask you something?"

Cyn perked up and looked at Emma. "Yes!"

"Last night you were super calm when we found Delilah. Almost like it wasn't your first time dealing with something like that. Was it?" Emma asked.

Cyn got wiggly in her seat. "I guess not. No. My.. brother. Jax. He's a recovering addict. The first time I found him like that I was ten years old. After that it just seemed like the normal thing between us. He'd get clean for a little bit. Use again. Rehab. Clean again. Back and forth."

Emma hadn't meant to make her uncomfortable. "I'm sorry for asking. I didn't mean to pry."

"It's okay. He's healthy now. I think it may stick this time." Cyn nodded. She was extremely optimistic.

"That's good."

Delilah walked into the room and stood there for a moment. Emma had to double take. Firstly, she was not dressed like herself. She was wearing a hoodie and a pair of sweatpants and thick white crew socks. Emma didn't even know she owned sweatpants. Upon further inspection Emma realized Delilah's hair was brown again. That was her natural hair color.

"I've missed the brown. It looks nice." Emma said. She didn't want to compliment Delilah too much. All morning she seemed uncomfortable in her skin. The last thing she wanted probably was a lot of attention on her looks.

"It's pretty, Lilah. Here!" Cyn said. She handed her the picture she just finished coloring.

Delilah looked down at it and smiled. It was a picture of bear making a cake. Cyn had colored it to make the cake chocolate. "Am I the bear?" Delilah asked.

"Yes." Cyn said. "I gave it red hair, but I can fix it."

"It's perfect, Cyn. Thank you. I'll put it on the fridge."

"Really?!?" Cyn said. She was super excited.

"Wait, what?" Emma asked. Her art work wasn't featured on the refrigerator. She felt a small spike of jealousy shoot through her.

"Yours is in a frame, love. On my desk." Delilah pointed to it.

Emma glanced over and saw the old picture she drew. "Oh."

Delilah gave her a small smirk. "Do you guys want to watch a movie or something or were you leaving?"

"Do you want us to leave?" Emma asked.

Delilah shook her head no. She really just did not want to be alone. Not now, maybe not ever.

"So we'll stay." Emma said.

"Can we watch a scary movie!?" Cyn asked.

"No. Emma will have nightmares for the next month." And one of them needed to be able to get a good night's rest, Delilah thought to herself.

Cyn giggled. "Don't worry, Mommy. I'll protect you." She raised her arms to flex muscles that weren't really there.

Emma laughed. "Mhm. Thanks, baby. Come on." She grabbed Cyn's hand and lead her to the living room where they piled onto the couch. Delilah, however, sat by herself in the armchair. She wasn't in the mood to be cuddly.

As the movie started, Emma couldn't peel her eyes from Delilah. It was hard to ignore all of the pain.

Delilah felt Emma looking at her and returned the stare.

Emma mouthed the words. "I love you."

Delilah mouthed them back and turned her attention back to the screen. She tried to feel something, but couldn't. The only thing she could feel was the all consuming emptiness inside of her. When would it ever go away?
